I would like to see more details about the machine gun though.

At the bottom of that page, it specifies that between May 20 and May 23, he arranged to purchase a Thompson sub-machine gun from an undercover agent. It also specifies that on May 23, ATF searched his house. I guess he took the bait and lost

Actually a member here on TGO at one time, to boot.  This is a fine example of why we are so quick to ban people who event hint of doing something illegal and why we strongly advocate that people use a bill of sale and perform all reasonable due diligence before buying or selling from someone.

I've said it before and I will gladly say it again:  Agencies most certainly watch private sales and sites like TGO, Gunbroker, Arfcom, etc.

Well, I knew him. Most of your assumptions are correct. He had several opportunities to come clean and get legal. He was open and bragged about his dealings. I have no sympathy for him, I even wonder how long it would have went on if he would not have sold to the cop killer, that is what sent the ATF his way. Supposedly the reason they stayed so persistent on him was they were wondering how in depth he was since everything he told them in questioning was lies. He actually gave them false written statements, which really pisses the ATF off.
