Wow WTF. There's a lot of disasters you can prepare for but that one is just out of nowhere.

I didn't know there was such a thing as "sinkhole alley" though, let alone that it's a common occurance. I had heard of them happening, but it's always been in other countries. I guess maybe it doesn't get as much national attention through the media when they happen here in the US.

They have called off the search for his body, the area deemed to unsafe for rescue workers. On Fox News this morining they were showing live footage of them tearing the house down with a large crane. They gave neighbors 30 minutes to get anything they wanted out of their houses and evacuated them. Very odd and sad story.

I heard yesterday morning they had all but called off the search then.

I am surprised we don't have more of them here in TN, we have allot of caves.

There was a sinkhole between Oak Ridge and Knoxville a few years ago on Pellissippi Parkway.

Normally sink holes grow over time, with little to no evidence on the surface until they go and then they go in a hurry.

One could probably test for them by drilling but no way to really test everyplace.

Big problem in central Florida area. The main reason for all the sinkholes is the lowering of the water table due to the water demands by the increased population.

I believe sinkholes will only continue to get worse for that reason.  Also due to oil/natural gas wells.

If I ever buy another house, the questions of drilling in the area may very well be on my list of questions.  (not much of a concern in cities but with luck I will get back to the country.

I feel so bad for that guy losing his brother. Can you imagine what that feels like. The last you ever knew of your brother was his screams as he was being swallowed up by a sink hole. Ver very sad. Lots of prayers for him and his family.

Definitely be careful when buying a house. During the housing boom there were developers building on property that had no business with a house on it.  When I was looking back around 2000 I had a geological engineer friend look at a neighborhood I was considering.  She looked around and said "You don't want to buy a house here."  "Why?"  She starts pointing at various locations within line of sight.  "Sinkhole.  Sinkhole.  Sinkhole.  See that spot in the back yard of that house?  That's the mouth of a cave."

My childhood house had a lot of land and it had a sinkhole where my family threw junk and i even played on it. The land had new houses built on it in the 90's. Im not sure what they did about the sinkhole.
