Folding Knife Gift Options

Recommended Posts

I'd like to give a folding knife as a gift and am looking for some suggestions in the ~$50 range; the only things I'm set on are A) assisted opening and B) easily carried in a pocket.  I've got a Gerber Leek I'm very happy with, that's a possibility, but I'd like to see what more informed knife aficionados would recommend.

The gift is for a guy, so "cool factor" is worth considering, but function and form matter more than anything.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you meant to write Kershaw Leek not Gerber .

Anyway I've had my eye on this one for awhile and it meets your requirements. Plus it's darn good looking to boot!

For $24.00 you cannot beat these knives, I have been carrying one for the last week and it is a great knife! They will make a fantastic gift

Along those same lines, I have this one. Also an RJ Martin design.

And then, I have a few of these, and have actually given one as a gift. Rick Hinderer design...

I carry a Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto point with a half serrated blade. I love it. It's taken a beating (slid down the road about 40 ft laying on it when I had a motorcycle wreck) and it's still as sturdy as ever. Holds an amazing edge, too.

No, I have the newer model. Not sure if there is a real difference other than cosmetically. Could be wrong, though. My brother is 101st and he carried one in Afghanistan and loved it so I got one. It's a beast.

Huge difference in the locking mechanism, TriAd now. And whole grip is way beyond cosmetics, totally different.

That was the old model and vid, is why I asked.

Voyager redesign also has those changes, much improved overall, although steel went from VG-1 to AUS-8, but full flat grind which I love.

I pickup one of the Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 with the three inch tanto blade the other day..., mostly because I have never had any Cold Steel knifes.

Seems to be a tough little knife - - - I have this almost overwhelming urge to low crawl into the woods looking for commo wire to cut!

Most of the ones that aren't "gimmicky" are remarkably good. Not just for the money, but period. Some real gems scattered around through their offerings, including some of their cheapest. The GI Tanto is a helluva deal for a survivalist beater you can't kill for example.

Nobody has a better lockup than Andrew Demko's Tri-Ad on even the mid-range folders, like yours and mine (I'm carrying the newer 4" Voyager right now and have American Lawman in pack).

Ya just have to ignore the antics of Lynn Thompson.  :)
