I am in the mood for a new(at least to me) shotgun. I only have a older 1100. It is a great gun but it is a fixed skeet barrel. I have thought about a new 1100 or a sx3(or browning maxus). Any opinions either way? I know I could just get another barrel but...

If your gun is not a 3" gun, then the receiver will not eject them as the port is not cut big enough. If you are talking about the chamber in a new gun, stick to 3". If you have a special hunt and need more fire power, you can always use hevi shot. In fact, I use it in 2 3/4" for my Canada trips. Edited by chances R

What would you use it for? There are a bunch of options as I'm sure you know, some are specific use cases and others are multiple uses.
I have a Stoeger P350 with pistol grip - I bought it for turkey hunting. But, Stoeger included a field barrel, standard stock and chokes so I could easily use this single shotgun for multiple purposes. It is a 3 1/2 chamber. Edited by jonathon1289

As far as the chambering goes...it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I had a Remmy 1100 years ago and really did not like being restricted to 2 3/4 inch shells. My Winnie 1300 takes up to 3 inch shells and it is nice to switch from 2 3/4" for skeet and small game to 3" for ducks and geese. JMHO......
