AR15 trigger suggestions

I didn't get much response when I posted this in an older, related thread. So I'm posting it in a new thread...

 

I've been considering upgrading the stock trigger on my Mohawk Armory MA15. I've read the reviews on the Timney and the Jewel triggers. I'm leaning toward the #3 Timney, but open to suggestions and experiences from other TGOers. I do mostly 100+ yd. target shooting at OK Corral in Woodbury, but my rifle is also a primary self-defense weapon... in a SHTF, WROL situation. Also, the differences/advantages between a single and two stage trigger?

 

I recently picked up a Vortex Viper 2.5-10x44 scope and have decommissioned the cheapo BSA red-dot sight that came with the rifle. I like the scope, still getting used to it, finding the "sweet spot" for the cheek weld and dealing with scope "shadow". The one thing that irks me is that I had to remove the MBUS rear sight to mount the scope. Perhaps the scope can be mounted further out on the pictanney rail, but I think the restrictive 4" eye relief is going to be a problem.

 

Advice anyone?

I would highly recommend the ALG QMS trigger. It gives about the same pull weight as a mil spec trigger (think home defense) while offering a repeatable crispness that's reliable (think target shooting).

It's made by the same company as Geissele I believe. Plus it's only $45 from Brownells.

Thanks, m8! I'll check it out. That price sure beats $200~ for the Timney. Looking at the Brownells site right now... that looks like the whole enchilada. What's the typical stock trigger pull? I noticed that this unit set for 6.5 lbs and doesn't appear to be adjustable. The reviews on Brownells and Midway are very positive. You're referrring to this, yes?

Stock pull is somewhere around the 6 lb range also.

Advice on that part is to simply use a separate riser rail or just higher rise mounts. Here's one of my AR with MBUS and P.E.P.R. quick detach mount. Plenty of clearance for both the MBUS and the 40 mm so guess it would do your 44 also. (that's a fat midlength handguard, too, since changed to a MOE).

 

 

 

Getting scope objective up higher on AR also usually improves sighting ergonomics/cheek weld too.

 

If you want to use your current rings then add a riser, fixed or QD.

to me you get what you pay for on AR triggers. a good 2 stage 1st stage weight is a pound or less. so I would good with a single stage. you can have a very good 3-4 pound trigger without weaker springs.  

ask the subject matter expert.

The PEPR is a great mount for an AR. I have two.

Cheaper option for you is to swap the stock trigger springs for reduced power springs.  JP makes a good set.  Polish the contact areas of the trigger and get one of Dolomite's trigger kit set screws.   It will not be a true target trigger, but it should get you fairly close and only be around 30 dollars out of pocket.

I'm running the Geissele SD-C on my 11.5" and pretty impressed. I really like the flat bow. I will probably get the SD-E for my 16" scoped AR soon.

I like that QD mount... looks awesome! If I go with a higher mount, I'll not be able to zip the case shut. It's already a pretty snug fit as it is. But I do miss my MBUS sights. How high is the mount, from the top of the rings to the base? I'll get an updated pic of my AR posted in the next day or two.

Well, you can either configure your rifle to fit a case or configure it for efficiency and ergonomics and fit a case to the rifle. I'd suggest the latter.

Or put a $15-20 riser rail on it, cheapest way of course. Quick detach if you want to be able to get to BUIS in a hurry.

I believe that's what they're calling the "slave" pin... it holds all the bits and pieces together for easier assembly

Geissele triggers are made by Bill Geissele. You won't get one of his triggers for 50 bucks, unless maybe you marry his sister.
