keyless entry car question

Recommended Posts

Okay, so we bought an old chevy tahoe. It is in pretty good shape, just a few annoyances with it. One is the keyless entry does not work. It is a 2001 and I googled it and found the method of reprogramming the fobs, but that did not help, of course I replaced the batteries. I am trying to figure out if the fobs are bad or if it is in the computer/whatever. There are replacement fobs all over Amazon, but if it is not the problem, I imagine getting it fixed would be expensive. The part number on the fob is 15732803.
Suggestions/real life experience/ advice sought! Thanks, Brooks

I would try a dealer. Probably expensive bit they can diagnose the issue. As I recall, there is a limit to the number of fobs that can be coded to a vehicle before it needs to be cleared.

You can go to autozone and where they have the batteries for the fobs you can test it to see if the fob is putting out a signal.

IF you find you need to replace it, Ace hardware can make them for around $50 I believe.

Really? That is good to know. My wife has lost several to her car, and my last Blazer. That's a lot better than dealer prices.

I got a replacement fob from amazon or ebay, programmed prefect.  however it was my spare and a few months later I picked it up and it was dead.  either it came with a cheapo battery or the unit it's self.  I haven't tried to change the battery yet.

This is the info I needed, thanks! I guess it is just my luck, but when I was in autozone trying the fob, I was pushing all the buttons and got nothing out of the lock/unlock buttons, but as soon as I hit the red horn beeping emergency button that one worked like a champ. I ordered a new one on Amazon today.

Thanks for the suggestions.

eBay is another source for key fobs. Just make sure the numbers match. I couldn't program our Pontiac using the method found on the forums and had to get the dealer to program it. I called around and found one that did it for $45. If you decide to go the dealer route and have more than one key fob make sure to give them both to the dealer to reprogram because programming the new one will make the old one not work.

Do the power door locks work from the switch inside the vehicle?

If they don't, check the fuse and/or relay.

If they do, see the dealer. They will be the only place you can trust to properly diagnose and repair the problem.

Yes, the doors lock and unlock with the switch on the door.
I just can't go to the dealer when I think I can figure something like this out. Maybe I will end up there, there are several other little issues with vehicle that I will have try fix with the help of Google.
