1911 virus

Recommended Posts

It appears an outbreak has taken place at the homestead. Last night my son sent some lead down range. Now he would really like his own 1911. So I am looking for some suggestions he prefers the CMD style. I am thinking 9mm would be best due to ammo cost. I have searched high and low for a 9mm New agent with no success. Any suggestions for finding one? Or a good alternative? Thanks

RI and SA have good 1911 9mm pistols.  My RI pistol was 100% out of the box.  My RO Compact took a few boxes before becoming 100% reliable.  The finish and sights are better on the RO but it cost a few dollars more.  Try to locate both of these as well as other brands before making a decision.  I also like my EMP but it probably isn't the best pistol for a first 1911.  You'll quickly learn the 1911 is an addiction, as you doing the paperwork on one, you're already beginning to have thoughts about which one to get next.

Just currious why the EMP might not be the best for his first? I am trying to balance what will fit him well now and 5 years from now as well. He is at the age now where we can do a lot of fun things together. Edited by wcd

Short barrel length and price were the reasons I didn't recommend an EMP for a first 1911.  Some have had problems with SA, Kimber and other pistols with 3" barrels although mine have been 100 % reliable.  Rock island and Springfield Armory are said to have excellent customer service should it be needed but none of my pistols has required warranty work.  Preferably shoot several calibers and barrel lengths before choosing which to purchase.

Avoid tupperware pistols!

Depends on the budget, but two that jump to mind right off the bat are the Dan Wesson Guardian 9mm and Springfield Range Officer in 9mm.  Less than that cost-wise you have RIA and those are decent guns.  More than that cost-wise...the sky is the limit.
