Teaching ISLAM in AMERICAN SCHOOLS?

There's lots of stories out there about that topic. You'd think the ACLU and all the others usually screaming about separation of church and state, prayer in schools, and all the atheists would be marching in the streets and city halls with law suits in hand. I suppose separation of mosque and state don't count though.

What's the worry, the libs say militant Muslims only represent a paltry 1% of the group, not the 15% reported by the islamophobes.

1% of 3 (to 8) million practicing Muslims in the US is nothing to be concerned about.

Except liars figure and figures don't lie...a small percentage of a huge number is still a big number.

Yes Islam was talked about in history class we might have covered some of the basic's but we never went in depth enough to even discuss their were 2 sub groups in Islam not alone covering the topic outlined in that posting.  We also never covered the 10 commandments or other major tenant of the other religions of the world.  If this class is covering the tenants of Islam to that leave are the also covering christians are they diving into the difference between protestants and catholics and how they differ?  How about the Jewish faith? and how about Hinduism or Buddhism?  All the major religions have played a part in history.

 

Unless they were in a religious studies class anything more then a very basic overview of their basic tenants is wasting time that could be better served learning about actual history.

I'm all for it. Just be sure ey are taught the THRUTH. Tell them EVERYTHING Mohammed did. Everywhere he went and all the people the sick enema bag murdered during his travels. How about all the women he raped? Don't forget those. How about the MILLIONS of people murdered in the name of Allah. How about a pile of heads so high, the scribe who recorded the details could not see over it from horseback? A dry riverbed that ran red from all the beheadings done there.

Hell yeah, teach our kids about Islam and all the truth behind it. Then, they can make up their own minds.

The Shia/Sunni divide is one of the underlining causes of the region being a powder keg, and is important when you learn about ISIS, and why they have achieved as much as they have.  It's relevant as history, and current world events, both things kids should be learning.

I agree that they should learn their are 2 groups the Sunni and Shia but do we really need to teach why they are divided?  The details of that worksheet suggests they spent a min of a week more likely 2 or 3 weeks on the topic and went into great details about their beliefs.  If they went though the level of details covering the differences between protestants and catholics when current events at the time was the conflict in Northern Ireland I could see the ACLU going nuts over that one.

My daughter studied islam for three weeks in a public school. She learned Allah is the only true God and muhammad is his prophet, but she didn’t learn about the 10 commandments.

Comparing the conflict in Middle East to The Troubles is apples to oranges.  Northern Ireland was a political fight where religious affiliation pretty much aligned with politics, so that angle was present, but it wasn't the root cause when things got hot in the 60s.

If you don't realize that Islam is a political movement more so than a religion, you have already lost.  There is no difference, to them it's one in the same, one true religion and a government based on Islamic teachings.

I didn't fail to miss that salient detail during my six years living in Muslim countries, both in and out of uniform.  If nothing else, being reminded that eating, drinking, or even chewing gum in public during Ramadan was a jailable offense hammered it home.

 

What I was talking about in that reply, was that in the 60s, the fighting between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland was a political fight, not a religious one.
