One thing you have to come to grips with is that S&W J-frames, with their coil springs, can't typically get the sort of triggers a well-tuned K, L or N frame can. Geometry, along with the spring type, makes it more challenging to get a smooth, light trigger, though Ken's suggestion will likely be a significant improvement. Larry

Or a grip safety not disengaged, or a round not chambered, or a 15 pound DA first shot that took the guy by surprise, or a slightly dislodged magazine that activated a magazine disconnect, or a SA with the hammer down, or gun out of battery -- who knows. The guy seemed a little out of it and I doubt he is any sort of pistolero.
