Smoked sausage and other things to do with deer.
10-Ring replied to 10-Ring's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Just wanted to do a quick update I made about 25 pounds of sausage using Sidinman's recipe. I did change up a few things. I used powdered mustard instead of mustard seeds and I added cheese and jalapenos. I cooked the sausage in two batches the first at 350 for about an hour and 15 minutes. I cooked the second batch at 300 for an hour and it was much better. I will be using sausage casings in the future as the wax paper left a huge mess. I love the sausage and have gotten nothing but compliments on it. -
I hope that it passes but if they are going to enforce this like they enforce the HOV lane then I really don't care. I travel 40 most everyday during HOV hours and there are more single occupant cars than multiple occupant cars. While we are on the issue of pet peeves I can't stand it when I'm on the interstate with my cruise control set and the same car passes me and I pass them 6 times or more within a 50 mile stretch. Usually they are messing with their phone when I pass them back and I may even make it difficult for them when they want to pass me.

I was gifted one of these the other day.

Man the yuppies around here would probably freak out and move back to where ever they came from. I'm all for it.

I watch the prices pretty closely, thought about buying some a few months ago, really wish I had now.

I don't like either as a carry gun, both too big, I've tried them and that is just my experience and opinion. That said I like the 17 better because I would use a gun like that as a house gun so there would be no benefit for the smaller size for me. Your mileage may vary.

I really enjoy seeing your work.

All PMs replied to. I have a list long enough to last a while. If I fulfill everyone I have so far I'll post back up.

Pulled up to my spot this morning and spotted a deer while I was standing by the truck getting dressed went ahead and took it it is already in the cooler processed, headed to work, not a bad way to start a work day.

The catch with this is that the processor still has to get paid. By following the link above you can buy a "deer coin" for $50, which you present to the processor and they process the deer and donate it. If anyone would like to pay for processing to donate the deer to Hunters For the Hungry I will be glad to deliver the deer to Lebanon Locker.

Not sure, I took a deer to a processor twice the first year I deer hunted, I haven't used one since. Houston's used to process deer, not sure if they still do. Lots of Mount Juliet folks on here, maybe one will chime in.

I once took a window fan and fitted it above the door jamb that went from the living room where the stove was to the rest of the house, it worked fantastic. I knew a guy that mounted a box fan right below his ceiling to blow it through the house. Really the higher up you can get it the better it will work. If there is a cosmetically viable option I'm not aware of it, I was doing that back before I was married.

I have a pair of Busnells. They are passable. I actually picked out the deer deer that I took last weekend with them and wouldn't have seen it without them. They are okay. My grandmother has some Steiners, man those are some sweet glass, I have no idea what they go for but I'm sure they are not cheap.

Wonder what the reasoning behind that was? I do know that the tree huggers have been trying to protect that place from everyone else for as long as I can remember. It's been 15 years since I've tried to hunt out there but back then the deer were few and far between.

I've been blessed to be able to hunt a farm for years and the place has become absolutely over run with deer. Unfortunately I have very little free time to hunt during the week. I've already bagged 3 deer this year and there will be plenty more. The land owner has asked me to kill as many deer as possible because they are destroying his crops. Due to my work schedule I get to hunt for a couple of hours before work and I don't get off until after dark so I have zero time to process the deer in the daylight and I'm just not desperate enough to do it by flashlight. So... If anyone wants a whole deer (I may even leave tenderloins in) let me know. I'm planning on hunting this place a lot throughout the season and a lot of deer will be coming off of it. The deer will have to be picked up in Mount Juliet around 6:30 in the evenings.

The are a lot of fox squirrels where I hunt. I bigger concentration of them than anywhere else I've ever seen. I had one in the tree right above me this morning and the little butthead crapped on me. Felt and heard something hit the sleeve of my jacket and looked down to find a pea sized turd. I think he was laughing at me.

Got a button. A 7 that I've seen several times came in on the trail of the doe I shot, then a button meet him from the opposite direction, they mingled for several minutes in some tall grass until the button finally have me a clear shot. I've let that 7 walk 3 times now, it's starting to get a little easier, if he can make it to next year he may turn out to be a really nice deer. He's got a good y'all rack, it's just narrow.

One doe down, waiting to see if her sister she came in with wanders back. Funny thing is I'm hunting a field where I have 300 yard shots, this one came in from the fence row behind me and I shot at about 30 yards.

I will check myself. I believe my comment came off as critical and I really didn't mean for it to.

I remember some friends used to hunt AEDC, seems like they may have been draw hunts though, May be worth checking out for next year. They usually did well there.
-
I don't think there was anything wrong with this deer's genes, he more than likely just wasn't old enough to have a big rack yet.

You would be surprised at how unafraid deer are of farm equipment, I've even seen them come to the sound of a tractor. I'm sitting in thevbarn now, it's cold and the wind is blowing the wrong way but I'm not going to sit in the rain and make myself sick. Had to work until 2 today. I hope conditions are better tomorrow.

I'm sorry I don't have time to go look at the book before work but from what you are saying it sounds like a buck is your only option. I know Catoosa used to have a minimum spread requirement as well. There is much better hunting to be had IMO, much closer to you as well. There is some good public land out there. I've spent the last 20 years figuring out how and where to hunt public land and be successfull, there is good public land out there access is the issue. But if it was easy it would be full of people.

From what I've heard that is how the girl got abducted, going to the restroom without adult supervision. That is something that we've just stared doing here in the last few months as well, letting our daughter go to the restroom by herself at restaurants. I think we are just going to use our discretion, it will depend a lot on where the restroom is in relation to us and the exits.

They have arrested a suspect. http://www.wsmv.com/story/30569677/arrest-made-in-connection-to-killing-of-7-year-old-ky-girl If ever there was a case for a lynch mob I think this is it. Capitol punishment is too good for this scum. My daughter is 6 and this has really hit home with me. We have recently let her start doing a lot more things on her own, but this really makes me think. You can't keep them in a jar forever though.
