ATF notice of proposed rule change AR pistols
Garufa replied to partypilot1's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
at the optimism and short memory of gun owners. If the ATF decides a gun is this, that, or the other, it is law until the courts decide otherwise. Bump stock ban...direct order of DJT. This new proposal is a quagmire designed for one thing and one thing only. Read the grading proposal. Congress has nothing to do with it and when the obligatory public comments are dismissed then the new regulation takes effect. It will carry the weight of law. -
Looking forward to pics of two NPM’s! Y’all get busy and show us what you got!

That wasn't the case earlier .

Well, that didn't last long. The great MidwayUSA M1 Carbine drop of 2021 is over. Sold out in a little over 3 hours.
-
Good price? $1k is bargain basement for USGI these days. It all depends on the manufacturer, condition, etc., etc. There are several post-war manufacturers. Plainfield, Iver Johnson, a brand new company called Inland (no relation whatsoever to the Inland division of General Motors from WWII) that is making brand new ones now. Some of them are crap, some are decent. Those made between 1942-1945 for the US military are unquestionably the best.

They could at least include one brand new Korean KCI mag. They’re $12 retail and I haven’t heard a bad thing about them.
-
Very late in the war, like 1945 right before production ceased. The Type 2 rear sight is the milled adjustable sight, Type 3 is the stamped version. The Type 3 barrel band includes the bayonet lug. It was standard practice for all M1 Carbines to be upgraded with these features after the war. That is why one should always question the “authenticity” of one with flip sights and no bayonet lug. Finding a true original is very rare. Your Inland shipped with the Type 1 flip sight and Type 1 or 2, probably 1, barrel band. That’s pretty much from memory cause I don’t feel like dragging the books out.

From what I hear none or very few have flip sights. If you select the different grades then different pics appear. Looks like Fine grade gets you one without bayonet lug, fair/good has one. It does make me wonder how they gots pics of the manufacturer’s stamp. No way they could take pics like that with an adjustable sight installed.

I’ll be keeping up with this as I definitely need new gutters and guards of some type to keep out the catkins, helicopters, and leaves. Tired of climbing up on the roof twice a year. @Erik88, have you considered going to a gun show to see what they have to offer? There used to always be a couple of gutter guard peddlers there.

Starting on July 1 at midnight through 11:59 p.m. on June 30, 2022, you won't have to pay sales tax in Tennessee on gun safes or other safety equipment. Gun safes are defined as "a locking container or other enclosure equipped with a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or other locking device that is designed and intended for the secure storage of one or more firearms." A gun safety device can be any device that can be added to a gun that permits the user to program the firearm to operate only for specified persons designated by the user "through computerized locking devices or other means integral to and permanently part of the firearm." https://www.wbir.com/article/money/tennessee-tax-free-guns-food-back-to-school/51-12db1fd9-2680-44a4-9903-26115845186f

Trying to identify Arisaka....NOT FOR SALE!
Garufa replied to JustEd's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
True that, but now it’s like a $1,500 rifle if not messed around with too much. -
There are no shortage of tales on the Internet of USPS Memphis/Southhaven issues. Based on how the post office is run and the general work ethic there, it’s the perfect storm of inefficiency.

Trying to identify Arisaka....NOT FOR SALE!
Garufa replied to JustEd's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
@JustEd If preservation is all that he wants tell him to go to Woodcraft down there and get some Renaissance Wax. It is also available online from a couple of places including MidwayUSA. Not cheap but is widely used by collectors. It’s used in museums and was in fact developed by the British Museum. if it were me, I’d figure out how to get the stock off and give the undercarriage a good inspection, cleanup, and waxing. Put it back together and do the outside. It’s going to be hard to find a gunsmith capable of properly caring for old rifles such as this in one specific area, IMHO. Maybe he’ll get lucky, It sure looks like someone’s been taking care of it all these years. What have they been doing? -

Garufa replied to JustEd's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I cringe whenever I hear someone adamant on “cleaning up” an old milsurp even when there is no reason to, especially one as valuable as this. It usually involves screwing with the stock hoping to make it look brand new. Big, big mistake. -
Very nice! Love the unfluted cylinder. BTW, the spec ord code indicates it left the factory June 28, 1990.

It’s starting to come apart on the other side as well.

Those things will put your eye out.

Trying to identify Arisaka....NOT FOR SALE!
Garufa replied to JustEd's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I know this because growing up in Memphis my best friend’s dad had one. He was in the Navy during WWII and brought it back from the Pacific. It was the “secret” Jap rifle as they had no markings other than a serial #. -
I don’t know about all that but I sure would like to have a S&W model 58.

Trying to identify Arisaka....NOT FOR SALE!

Fun fact: The Italians produced rifles for the Japanese during WWII. Those are known as Type I’s and are basically Carcanos that look kinda like Type 38’s. -

It is a Type 44 carbine, a variation of the Type 38 rifle. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_44_carbine Looks like it is in excellent condition. If it hasn't been goobered with since it's liberation in the Pacific and is still in the original 6.5 x 50mm caliber, I'd try to find some ammo and shoot it. Arisakas are known as some of the strongest bolt-action military rifles ever used. Graf's has some ammo in stock now.....https://www.grafs.com/catalog/category/categoryId/164 Steinel is another source for this not easy to find caliber, but they are on backorder....https://www.steinelammo.com/product/6-5-x-50mm-sr-arisaka-140gr-sp/ As for care, just keep the steel oiled up and it should be fine for a long time to come.
