  1. I recently acquired a Ruger American .22 bolt-action rifle. Great little gun, love it, very accurate, and comes w/ a threaded barrel from the factory! Have seen people using cans for .308 rifles on it on you-tube vid's.   - K
  2. It's totally true.... anyone who's had a fireplace, back me up here? Throw in 3-4 sticks of fresh ash, you've got a PILE on the bottom to clean before you put more wood in. I can burn dry locust, maple, and oak and have less ash after a whole weekend, than from 1-night of bad-wood. I loved getting a call for a downed-maple in the fall. By the time the next season rolled around, I had great firewood!
  3. I've been using Speer Lawman and Federal's American 9mm w/ good results, and don't have to clean it every time. Easily go 500 rnds between cleanings seeing no ill effects. I think by nature, the process is 'dirty'? I used to have a wood burning fireplace in my old house, and some wood(s) left a big ash pile, but dry locust and oak hardly any.... There's likely a lot going on that might affect the level of fouling you're experiencing, I don't know if it's as simple as changing brands (but could be). Reloading your own shells is probably the end-answer IMO.   - K
  4.   Coming from a manufacturing background... it's not uncommon, EVERYTHING is JIT (just in time) these days. Thank Dell for being so successful. From big to small companies, everything is cut to the bone in the name of profits. Especially if they're a small, hand-made manuf. company... they likely only have a day or two's worth of leather on the floor, also. I work(ed) in the printing biz, and rather than get paper in-stock and on the floor, we waited for the delivery truck daily, juggling jobs and priorities, to the detriment of production efficiency, because we wouldn't get the paper for that job until.... AND this was our 'house sheet', not some exotic custom hand-crafted paper. Of course we'd use the paper eventually, but rather than tie up credit @ our supplier, we'll move things around until we get that paper on tomorrow's truck. To make matters worse, 'cold' paper fresh off the truck runs very different than one that's been on your floor acclimatizing for 24-hours (affects final quality of the product we had to ship, and impacted efficiency).True story. Baffled me daily.   It's one of the reasons some folks have taken to stocking up on food in their own homes for emergency preparedness (while I don't mean specifically those w/ buckets of freeze-dried staples in their closets, they've read the same information): most grocery stores have at best, 12-24 hours worth of supply on-site. I've lived through several blizzards where you're holed up for 2-3 days before you can exit your dwelling! It's just something I do every fall in preparation. For some folks, the concept of not being able to drive to Kroger's for a quart of milk is preposterous! Just-In-Time. It's the new way of doing things (until it fails spectacularly, but that's a conversation for a different forum here! :D )   - K
  5.   I knew your ears would be burning w/ this post! LOL! ;)   - K
  6.     Thanks for the info! For the most part just target shooting. What differences exist from the sportster to weather warrior 16's, just the stainless? The guy I was talking to @ the range had the model 16 SS and liked the weight of it vs. his Rem700... that being said, I see Remington has a model 700 w/ SS barrel at 24" (vs. 22" savage), that weighs the same (costs about $30 more).   - K
  7. I mean, besides price...I can't tell what makes a Model 10 different from Model 16? Saw a gorgeous Model 16 w/ stainless barrel at the range this week, and was talking w/ the guy. Had no complaints. He got it to replace the Remington 700 he just sold (which ironically is the other rifle I've been looking at). Said they were both tack-drivers. I went to their website and couldn't even see them marketing them differently. So if you were shopping for a savage rifle, which model would you be looking at, and why?   - K
  8. Yeah, thinking of pulling the trigger on another Ammo purchase. Seen draft versions of a bill floating in NYC, limiting the amount you can purchase every 90-days. Shot more than that yesterday morning! Scary times.
  9. Ya know, not for nothing....   In a previous life I was the technical whiz-kid at a mid-sized printing company. We handled several national accounts, one was a large spring-water bottling company you've all heard of. Every couple years, they'd threaten our contract w/ them, we'd wiggle, jump, give something up, and they would sign on for another 3 years. ONE of these instances required me going out to NYC (White Plains, actually), to install a remote proofing device and computer on the end of an ISDN Line so the sales guy could get his proofs same day vs. waiting for FedEx.   He took me to dinner that night and was talking w/ him about the account, work, life, etc., and he shared w/ me that these exercises were all just for show (and to get something out of their supplier - our employer). He let me in on a little secret about the account. You see, the Salesman's wife, and the President of this Spring-Water Bottling Company's wife, were Sorority Sisters from college, and the guy liked to golf at this one country club ($225k annual membership!) So long as my employer paid for the salesman to have membership at this club (and he took the guy golfing while the wive's had brunch on Saturday...), the account wasn't going anywhere.   Last I worked there, 10+ years ago, that was a $20 million dollar account annually.   Behold the Power of the P gentlemen!   It's not always about money. Sometimes the money is just for show. ;)   - K
  10. Hahhaa, that's awesome! Glad she found a good home. Would have considered keeping her if we weren't all crammed into a rental half-the size of our old house!   - K
  11. Thanks for sharing! This is one reason I like working in Printing!   - K
  12.   DITTO!!!! Try 'em out before buying anything. Wife and I spent probably close to $500 @ the range at Frontier Firearms trying EVERYTHING we could before purchasing our EDC's.   My Wife has the LC9s, which I like shooting quite a bit, and find it easy to conceal.... but I use an M&P compact (both 9mm), so I'll just stay out of this Glock-fight! :D But that's how I ended up w/ the M&P... it simply shot the best for me.   Another one to add to the mix is the Springfield line - check them out if you haven't tried them before.
  13. Hi Jordan, welcome to TGO, you've found a great place.   Ditto what everyone has said RE: ORSA so far. Been a member for a few months, very glad I joined.   Yes, all new members should be $150 (I got in just under the wire). It does cover entire household (under 21, unlimited guests, but must be w/ you at all times).   I did not have a sponsor when I signed up, just mailed in the paper application w/ a check for the dues, few weeks later I was @ the orientation meeting. The skeet/trap ranges are very nice. Place has an almost country-club atmosphere in some ways (mean that as a compliment)?   Plinking range is wide-open, and usually the busiest on weekends... but you can always find an open lane. About 10-covered stations? 50-yds deep, earthen berms on 3-sides, you bring the targets, produce is encouraged.... :D Rifle ranges are a bit more organized, you will meet some very serious shooters there (in addition to folks sighting in their deer rifles), Archery range is a nice touch, too. The whole facility, really, is a "good' example of that kind of range.   I've been to Windrock a few times through "Range Day" announcements I've seen here, keep an eye out to try out some slick guns, and meet lots of TGO'ers!   However Windrock is not in the same caliber as ORSA (eh, eh.... I'm here all week folks!) Windrock is 3 lanes dug out of the side of a hill, with some steel targets on the pistol range. 1 of the rifle-ranges @ ORSA is bigger than all of Windrock. Depending what you are looking for in a range, it may be the better answer for you?   I have witnessed members correcting un-safe behavior at ORSA. Folks are very accommodating and agreeable, even when disagreeing. Everyone is an RSO, if you're on the range, you're in charge of keeping it safe. Eyes and ears are also taken very seriously.   Would also be happy to give you a tour if you'd like. I've been enjoying the new steel-plate range w/ our .22. Bang... PING! Great fun! Just give me an excuse to go there, that's all I need! :D Sat. shooting starts @ 9, Sundays they keep quiet until noon. Dusk ends all outdoor shooting. Let me know when you'd like to go and I can meet you out there this weekend, or during the week.   - Kevin
  14.   Amen! If you can't see it you need to take your head out of the sand.   - K
  15.   Blasphemous! There is no such thing! :D   - K
  16.   My Grandparents are rolling over in their graves. And yes, sadly, as w/ the welfare forms published in Spanish, you will likely see it coming to this country soon, also. Sad but true. It's things like this that spawn revolutions (the failure of disparate groups to integrate into a cohesive singular 'society', not immigration in general).   - K
  17.     Hahaha! I moved down here from the Rochester area this summer!   - K
  18. Oh, I was duly warned about some of the double-speak I might run into down here, but I appreciate it. I figured he wasn't the brightest bulb in the batch, so just smiled a lot while nodding until he left. ;) Last night here, we'll be able to leave our shoe's out again! Big white poofball's our dog, a 3-year old Golden Retriever/Standard Poodle mix. More Poodle than Golden. Great family pet, hypo-allergenic! Just shave 'em down in the warm weather (long hair was an asset for him last 2 winters!) - K
  19. I'm not a fan of my mossberg. It's the lowly 500, but all the same, last one I buy.   - K
  20. Interesting read... spoiler: VA Gov. bought and paid for by Bloomberg's PAC.   http://ncrenegade.com/editorial/va-gop-to-defund-protective-services/   Hey, I LEFT NY, to get away from that kind of nonsense, it's crazy, I'm on your side!   - K
  21.     Yeah, sickening how some people act when the victim can't fight back? Heard similar stories growing up... whole litters put in a sack w/ a brick, tossed over board in Lake Ontario? Like I said, I know God didn't make 'em that way, so no sense in me making it worse, they likely aren't capable of empathizing, and if I dressed them down (or worse!), it would only make problems for me.   It's like when Southern folk smile and tell a Yankee "Bless your heart".. :D  I figured being kind was in everyone's best interest.   - K
  22. I hear ya brother. I know people aren't born that way, so I figure someone made them like that. No sense in me pouring fuel on the fire? I thanked him for changing his mind, told him we'd make sure she had a good home, and wished him well. I kinda figured by the fact he showed up at our front-door at 8:30 this morning, and was glad she found a place to stay, that he was glad they never went for a walk in the woods. Said he was mostly sore she took off and wouldn't come back. Said he kicked her once when she was a pup and didn't listen, and it's been an uphill battle training her since (go figure!)   To quote Ron White, YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!   - K
  23. Well, the original owner stopped in this morning to check on her, we had a chance to talk. He's glad we took her in, he said he was awful mad yesterday, and had a buddy who said he'd dig the hole! LOL! She's 14 mos., really smart, and likes kids, playing w/ other dogs. Couldn't care a whit to hunt. He didn't want to give her away to just anyone, said they would just breed her for 2 years, and then kill her, and didn't want that to happen. Wanted to find her a family (or shoot her himself apparently?!) Brother has a black heart-shaped mark on his side, some of the best looking dog's in East Tenn.... Got them from a breeder, said she's full blood.   She 'came in once, will again in the spring'... I think he meant menstruate, kept talking about others wanting to breed her (but he wouldn't take the damned marbles out of his mouth, my yankee ear's only understood every 3rd word, LOL!)   He was happy to see her in a home w/ 3 kids, but I did mention we were talking to a rescue group.   - K
  24. Guy mentioned something about the heart-shaped white mark on her head being un-common? Brother had it too. You can see it good in above pic.   She is a sweety. Loves the chew toys (that my 3-year old couldn't be less interested in!)   We know from the owner she's right around a year old, but the teeth are still small and sharp, very puppy-like teeth. Loves chewing, too, she's not outgrown that yet.   Apparently she's got some hunting instinct in her.. Prev-owner said she ate a cat once. :stunned:   - K
  25. Said he was going to tie her up to a tree and shoot her...... WTF?!?!?!??!?! My kids have been asking, "How could someone do that...?" and I don't have an explanation for them? Some people just don't value life the same as we do, is the best answer I can give them? They're happy to hear she's going to find a good home. Made the night OK on our bedroom floor next to our 3-year old GoldenDoodle. Really likes being outside though (not that you can tell from the pic below).... - K
