  1. My 30-30 has a 3-7x leopould scope.  Because I had the scope on hand more than selection for this gun.   Its just a regular old fashioned crosshair.  Its fine at the range of this gun; a 30-30 is typically used at 300 or less yards, and it works for me.     My 308 lever has a something (10ish?) to 24 power cheap "sniper" scope on it with mil dots or dashes (I forget but some sort of field-guesstimate type).   For use at longer ranges.   While overpowerful and "too easy" at shorter ranges like 100-200, there is much to be said for overpowerful and easy .....  a good choice for a casual day or to show off your "skill" :)
  2.   Oh.   My 2 cents on *that* .... one caliber, even one single handgun, is "enough".   Knowing how to operate a variety of firearms is good, and having a sense of how to shoot stuff with a stout recoil or an impossible action is important.   But a single pistol is sufficient and having a few hundred rounds of practice ammo & 50-100 defense rounds is more than enough for anything short of the end of the world.   An old saying about the guy with one gun knowing how to use it really well comes to mind...     My advice on a "system" for a new permit holder is to carry one gun, shoot it weekly at the range if possible, get *good* with it not only accuracy but speed, drawing, reloading, etc.  That is, drill with the gun often as if you were under attack by the target.  If your range does not allow drawing, do it at home unloaded and safely, just you by yourself and pointed in a safe direction as best you can etc.  Buy or make cheap ammo and shoot it up.    But at the end of the day the odds of you needing more than 2-3 mags worth of ammo in a lifetime should be slim.  If not, you need to consider your lifestyle or something.   I mean, I have managed to not have to fire a gun at anyone ever, and have carried one since the mid 90s, so 2 decades of not having to "use" even 1 round of ammo.  I like to shoot, and practice a lot, but with any luck I will live my life without firing a single shot at another person.
  3. IMHO everyone should have at least a cheap chainsaw.    Even living as I do in the city, from time to time a big branch or small tree keels over right in your way, either on your property or on the road near it.    When those tornados hit I had to cut a tree off my roof with my saws-all because all the chainsaws had been bought up, lesson learned.  I had a real saw when the next one fell, much much easier.
  4. not sure what defensive means.... but I "stock" most of the calibers I have firearms chambered in, with the exception of a couple of rifles that I just do not shoot much.    so, um .. 45 acp 45 LC 380 9mm 38 sp 357 mag 44 mag 223 22 mag 9x18 mak 12 ga (slugs & buckshot & more) for sure are all "stocked" to some extent (at least 1 box of defense ammo owned + practice ammo).   Only 3 of those are actually carried, though, and a couple more are strategically stashed.
  5. I shoot cheap cast 380s in 9mm & 38sp both.  I fear to take them magnum (do not want to shred them in the barrel or get excessive lead) but they work fine for me *after some time invested working up the loads*.   I have never tried it the other way (38s  in the 9s).
  6.   Yes.  Because a high % of men buy large plastic guns.  A large % of women buy smaller stuff.   Its just starting with what is most likely to work, not a slight toward either one.   Again, the solution is to ask to see something like what you want, that gives the sales guy a starting place other than the pink DAO 380.

Yes, in theory.  But there was an awful lot of talk about the 556 and  failure to stop hits vs the ultra thin targets in the last couple of wars....   it poked a hole in the target and dumped no energy, made little more wound than a .22 LR to hear some of the descriptions.   I dunno, I was not there, and the internet isnt exactly reliable info.   Could be bad info / misconception.   Could be true.  For me, my pistol is not using FMJ though, just in case.
  8. There is a WORLD between kill and murder.  Which is it?    Killing --- by accident? Self defense?  In war?  To protect others? --- is very, very different from killing someone without cause (for greed, anger, or other unjustifiable reasons); that is murder.   So right off we have a translation issue.

The thing about the shorter barrel velocity loss in 223 is its ability to tumble.   I do not know --- its all garbage in and garbage out from the web, with little in the way of science behind the few tests on the subject ---  but supposedly the 223 will no longer tumble if it loses too much velocity.    This is easy to deal with (use the hollow point / rubber tipped ammo) if it is true, but my understanding was that is the biggest thing to pay attention to when using a short 223 @ a reduced velocity.    You do not want to have it for defense if all it can do is poke a 22 caliber hole.
  10. Funny, and fun to make fun of, yes. But I *want* the security guys to open up pressure cookers.   That makes sense.  It makes a LOT MORE SENSE than most of the other things they do, actually.  Ban them? No.  But scan them, same as any other container?  Yes.   And if the lid is ON it and closed up tight, it needs to be treated with the caution due a bomb.   KISS method.... new rule for flying --- all pressure cookers shall have the lid NOT on and sealed for travel.  Thank you.  Problem solved.
  11.   Would be difficult.   The mauser family/company made guns from the late 1800s until almost 2000 (sold a time or 2 of course).  They contracted out millions of rifles for the armies of the world, all over the world, and made pistols and rifles in amazing quantities.   When you start talking 5-10 models per country per decade over much of europe and south america and more, ....  one of each is probably 50 - 100 rifles depending on how picky you get, and a like number of pistols...
  12. Look at it from the seller's perspective.    Probably 90+ % of women buy a small 380 or 38sp.  Another 5% might get a compact 9mm.   Maybe 1/2 % might even look at a 1911.     You want to see a 1911?  Say "let me see a 1911".    Same goes for a man.  A man walks in there and says "I needz a gun for defense, whats good" he is not going to get to see the 1911s, because most men do not buy those for defense.     The SECOND you walk in there and ask for a recommendation, the guy has to make a decision on what you might like and because you asked, has to assume you know nothing at all.   If you knew anything, you would point and ask to see what you wanted to see.   From his experience,  female shooters want tiny guns in medium calibers, 380s and 38s being super popular.    Go in there and point to anything at all that you like, say "let me see that one" and then if it is not what you want, spell it out... "this is the right size but the grip is too fat, what is similar but more comfortable...?  and you will get a better answer.       --- and my personal 2 cents: I think it is idiotic to recommend a gun with a 10+ pound trigger pull to any novice who clearly does not know what they want.  Actually recommending anything is a thankless task, with nothing to go on, and a shooter who simply does not know what to ask or what they want, its like trying to sell a car to a 6 year old --- all you know is that brand name recognition and shinys might work.
  13. CZ Kadet is an adapter for their 9mm.  You can get  them made this way @ czusa custom shop.   My wife has one and it is very, very good.  Super accurate, on par with the ruger mark.   It is not ammo picky.  Suggestion: have them do the single action mod when you order it.     Highly recommended.   can't comment on any of the others you listed .
  14. Price of 3-d printer:  $500 and UP steeply.  $500 is a guess, they may cost MORE. price of computer to feed it:  $300 and up.  total: $800 or more.   price of a crap gun for robbing the gas station: free if stolen, or $200 tops.   derp.
  15. I dunno either.  I stopped at the "anything that is dangerous to humans = category 1"  and could not make up my mind.  While not listed specifically, I would think a deadly toxic spider counts.  However, IMHO so would an agressive dog..... so that leaves me going "duh" at the crappy wording.         we had insecticide immune flying giant roaches when I was in college.  My roomie sprayed one with raid until it dripped off it and it was just fine.  So I told him to go again and I struck a match, it didnt survive that but my roomie was startled, should have warned him I guess.  Smell bad.... did not do that again.

I haved a scoped plr-16, its reasonably accurate out to about 200 yards, as in it would work for hunting/"defense" or whatever at that range.  It could probably do better, I have not spent enough time working up target ammo for it specifically.   Its not a sniper rifle.    At any range where it would be a replacement for an AR or AK, its more than fine -- its really a close quarters build anyway.
  17. wow, nice find, grats!
  18. WMD --- I do not think this means what he thinks it means....    Someone had a link and in it the guy pointed out that more people died from the crap factory explosion than from newton, many many times more were hurt than boston, yet it got like 1/2 a day of press tops.   And that was not even mass destruction, just a relatively small explosion.    WMD .... if he only knew what humans are capable of today....   the body count for a real one is in the millions.   Not even a mini-gun with an infinitely long ammo belt could come close.
  19. http://www.bornfreeusa.org/b4a2_exotic_animals_state.php?s=tn   • TENN. CODE ANN §70-4-401 - Prohibited acts.   (a ) It is unlawful for any person to possess,   (b ) No person shall possess Class I or Class II wildlife without having documentary evidence showing the name and address of the supplier of such wildlife and date of acquisition.   (1) Class I - This class includes all species inherently dangerous to humans.   more details on the link but it sounds like it is not legal.
  20. widow does not cause the necropsy,  just the recluse.    widow toxin is generally not fatal but you might wish you had died.   I think apart from death (again, rare) you can also get kidney failure.   Its no joke...   Lots of violent cramps at the very least.   One in captivity is not going to proliferate them.   The are darn common critters and nothing we do is likely to change their population a bit.  Probably every home here has a couple.     I am almost 100% sure there is a law against owning deadly lifeforms without permission......
  21. the "solution" I was hearing was to make 3-d printers refuse to print some shapes, sort of like how most copiers and scanners have software to fight printing money.     Dunno how possible that would be, everything in a gun is basic except the frame and usable in other applications.  I mean a simple one is just a tube, really...
  22.   Most of the destroyed cars are not real, sometimes real but a ruined hulk with a paintjob & computer graphics overlay etc.  Sometimes real but the destruction is faked, or real but switched the nice car out and zoomed out tricks.  Its kinda like how they don't really kill the actors :)
  23. I tossed comcast over their anti-gun policy and high prices, the service was as bad as anyone else, no better, no worse.   Some of the guys were pretty good really.
  24. do let us know.  Their owner dabbles in politics and may try again....   would be worth knowing.
  25. stuff happens, if he was out without notice could be sick or something RL came up.   While the delay stinks, without knowing, it has not been long enough to freak out given the parts delay.  Keep trying to get some info on what is happening, maybe drive by the place if its handy.
