Hawk problem

Recommended Posts

I've had a hawk move into the neighborhood who is tearing through our songbirds like Micheal Moore at a Shoney's all you can eat buffet.

Can I do anything about the hawk or (as I suspect) is it a protected species?

Anybody know?

That begs the question: What birds are open season all year around? Thinkin' nada, right?

Crows, starlings, I'm fairly sure...and maybe sparrows, I dunno without the TWRA hunting guide, which hasn't came out yet.

I guess they want to give them a 4 day rest from being shot at.

They are a ton of fun...just put out an Owl decoy and two or three crow decoys, put on the crow/ Owl fight tape, and get ready to burn some powder!

Have had hawks living and nesting in trees on our hillside for years. Love to watch them hunt squirres and swoop down on crawdads in the spring. Unfortunately, crows started moving into the area last year and are chasing the hawks out. My Gammo pellet gun gets a workout whenever I can get a shot at them. Of course only to scare them off.

One hawk won't eat much, maybe 1 bird per day. But they also eat mice, rats, moles, and snakes. Raptors in general are great to have around.

We have a Cooper's hawk and a young Red-tail that hang around. I seem them soaring over my neighbor's fields. We have several bird feeders and a variety of song birds. I occasionally see a puff of feathers in my yard. It's usually a dove, and I'm happy to be rid of a few of them.

I have bird feeders here in the Knoxville urb ... have the occasional big Red Tail swoop down and carve one out.

Last one I was witness to, he struck at a dove, but missed, and took a much smaller house finch as consolation prize.

Always quite a stunning spectacle. Magnificent creatures.
