Picked up two cap and ball revolvers

Did some trading and ended up with two replicas today. Still unknown on maker, but both are Italian from what I can tell.

First one is an Remington 1858 Army in .44

And the other (my fav. right now) is an 1851 Colt Navy

And here both together. Now I just need a leather rig for them and I'm set.

Of course they will be there the 30th. hopefully I'll have the stuff to load and shoot them by then. I need some 3f, .454 balls, #10 caps, and a powder flask or some kinda measure. I have some .36 cal balls for the 1851. I also need some leather, but good lord its so expensive. And Thanks WD, I feel like I got a good deal on the trade, they are in good shape, and very shootable, and they are what I wanted, which helps

Double check, I think you may need "Number 11" caps....

Buy number 11's first....maybe save some money. I know around here, number 10's are very hard to come by. Most people who use them complain that they do not fit/work very well.

Congrats on the pistols! They are fun to shoot! You need a couple of holsters... or you could go Hickock and tuck'em in a sash!

I have a Remington copy just like yours, only much, much older. I have put a lot of rounds through it, as well as blanks at re-enactments, and yes 25 to 30 grains of powder is about all you want to use. Have fun with them. Mine has provided me with many hours of enjoyment!

Not a fan of the flap holsters. I know they are correct, and they work, but I'm gonna have mark build me a set of cowboy holsters

In a brass frame I would be hesitant to go over 20gr, but that is just me. I would prefer to shoot it for years as opposed to a year big booms.

The brass frames will stretch. So while you could theoretically put 30 gr into one without a catastrophic failure, you wouldn't do it a whole lot.

That is just my two cents.

Brass guns are for looking at in my opinion, they are prettier than the steel guns. Steel guns are for shooting.

If you got them used, the first thing I would do is start checking gaps. A lot of folks get brass guns because they are cheaper, but they don't realize that they are weaker. If they are used, odds are good someone loaded them like they were steel, and they could already be stretched.

Yes I got them used, but already had a gunsmith look them over, he said they are good to go. I traded a Taurus semi-atuo I wasn't all that fond of, mostly because I really wanted to get into cap and ball. If I find that it is for me, I'll eventually invest in a matched set of steel 1847 Walker Colts. If not, then I won't feel bad about using them as wall hangers.

Walkers are horse pistols. I mean big. They were issued with saddle holsters.

YEah I've held one. Close to 5 lbs, and 16" long. 60 grains of powder and the most powerful handgun until the .357 magnum came along. Thats what I was inquring about the "Bad" Frank phillips shoulder holsters for. Nothing like carrying two hand cannons around with ya.

I wouldn't O/C them in town, but around my house on the farm, and up in the backwoods where I grew up and my family lives I would. Hell I grew up in an area like what they portrayed on the Hatfields and Mccoys. My dad didn't have indoor plumbing until he finished building his log house in 1980. His parents got it in '84. Electricity in '64 I think. I grew up kinda country, I guess thats why I'm addictied to the old stuff. Cap and balls, pipes and cigars, straight razors, draft horse farming, etc. lol
