I have a buddy that has been hunting it for past couple weeks and he as about 6lbs of green so far and said he will keep going till it is gone. One warning to all that hunt it. Make sure you have a gun with you filled with snake shot or rat shot just in case you meet an unfriendly forest creature that sizzlers on the ground. So far my buddy has killed to Copperheads during his hunting trips. He also ran up on a rattler but the rattler was trying it's best to move away from him so he let it go...........jmho

There is a season on ginseng season in Tn, at least around here the authorities take it pretty seriously.

I thought the season was late aug, guess it is Sept.

he harvest season for wild ginseng in Tennessee is September 1 - December 31. The buying season is from September 1 - March 31.

Yeah until last year the season was Aug 15, but the berries in Tennessee are still green at that time. So they moved it to Sept 1 to help get the berries red before digging

when I first started typing I was thinking it used to start with squirrel season.  That makes sense.

Damn Neil, I'd love to have your job. I hate sitting in a cube all day.

I never realized Ginseng was worth that much but I heard it grew wild in the mountains. Thanks for sharing this info.

I just spend 2 days in Big South Fork, I wonder how much of this I walked past without even realizing it.

I believe what 10-Ring has is Virginia Creeper.

Erik, pulling up 'sang at BSF I'm pretty sure is a Federal offense.

Ah, makes sense. I saw Neil mention it was allowed in Frozen head so I assumed BSF was fine but I guess a federal park is different than a state park.

No no no, you misunderstood. I said "I've known people to dig on frozen head and GSMNP". I didn't say it was legal :D

You can dig on Cherokee national Forest if you buy a $15 permit.

My job isn't all roses. I had to walk my ass off to get up that mountain, and got into a yellow jackets nest. Damn I hate those things.

Anybody seen this show Appalachian Outlaws?  New reality series about ginseng diggers.  They really can do reality shows about anything...

It makes me want to sit in my woods with a gun.  Oh, wait, I already do that.  Seriously, I hope this show doesn't make it.  There's enough trespassers out there without promoting another reason to tresspass.  It seems that much of the show's content is someone going where they're not supposed to be to dig, or someone protecting what they have from those that shouldn't be there.
