Question on Non Resident Permits

Recommended Posts

There is a chance(god willing) that I may be moving back to TN. Since I can easily convert my FL permit to a non-resident permit, and TN honors non-resident permits then I'm assuming I should be fine to carry even after I become a TN resident?

If memory serves, I think this is what Kwik did but I'm not positive.

I'm sure I'll eventually get my TN permit too but if I'm right, I won't have to be in a hurry to do so.

For 6 months.

Hey, that's pretty generous. I'll take it. At least I can carry during that time while I wait for the TN permit. Plus, with the new vehicle carry law I'm covered in the vehicle regardless.

My TN HCP expired in January and it's been invalid for 3 years. I kept it anyways.

QUESTION

May a Tennessee resident who does not have a Tennessee handgun carry
permit under Tenn. Code Ann. § 39-17-1351 and who has no other commission or
permit issued by the State of Tennessee or a local government in Tennessee rely on a
handgun or weapons permit issued by another state as authorization to carry a
handgun in Tennessee?

OPINION

A Tennessee resident may rely on an out-of-state permit only for six months
after establishing residency in Tennessee. After that time, a resident must have a
handgun permit issued by the State of Tennessee.
