One NOT in the Pipe Saved a Life

I know there is a thread on One in the Pipe, but here is a story of a local news event from Friday night of where one was not in the Pipe and saved the life of a officer because her gun was loaded.  Over-all the story is tragic for the teen, but could have been a murder and then suicide.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The body of a 16-year-old boy who deputies say attacked a juvenile corrections officer and escaped was found Saturday morning, according to Blount County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Dillon French was found around 8:30 a.m. by a local resident who was out taking pictures on the Greenbelt near Church Street.  Blount County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Marian O'Briant said it appears he died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

French's death is being investigated by the Blount County Sheriff's office and the Maryville Police Department.

French was accused of using a toilet lid to attack the officer. He then stole the officer's gun and shot at her but the gun did not go off.

Investigators say the gun didn't go off because there was no bullet in the chamber, but it did have a loaded magazine when French took it.

O'Briant said the officer was injured and taken to U.T. Medical Center. She was released Friday night with staples in her head but no concussion.

Investigators followed multiple leads overnight to locate the missing teen

While this worked out well in the end, I don't think this quite falls on one side or another of the one in the pipe argument.  Police should be locked and cocked while on duty and while secured except maybe in an armsroom.

For us, while carrying it is a personal decision which needs to be made by the individual carrying.  I fall into the locked and cocked category, but that's just me and a product of my training and experience.

Anyone else notice that the guard was a bit advanced in age? Its just kids right? And how on earth does the lock box "accidently" NOT get locked? Someone was just lazy and didn't bother to lock it. Just kids right?

From what I understood the suspect beat up the officer and then took the lock box key from her.

Well it's the media. Just proves college doesn't always make someone smart.

My head was spinning after reading the story. Took a few seconds to figure out what actually happened.

Then I watched the video, it is worse, "there was no gun in the chamber."
