  1. I wish I could stow a weapon in my truck at all times with the grab bag...
  2. I know it sounds like a stretch, but if something happens that makes you have to hump it home, AND fight to get there (hence the gun), we aren't likely talking about something small scale that you can handle with the compact ccw and small amount of ammo you already have with you.
  3. Since this is a 'get home bag' weapon, and I consider that to be a weapon you would use in a non-permissive SHTF environment involving societal breakdown and potential conflict with authorities. For that reason it might be worth considering the same caliber as your local or regional law enforcement, perhaps even the same make and model... With that in mind, if I chose a 9mm other than a Glock, it would be a Beretta M9. All of this with consideration that I may have to pick up dropped ammunition and magazines along the way if there is fighting.
  4. I've owned two FNP-45s, one with safety and decocker and the other decock only. Both were very accurate (the most accurate factory polymer frame pistols I have ever fired), have excellent triggers, soft recoil. Better shooters than the M&P 45 in any regard, BUT, they are huge and holsters are hard to find... which is why I now have a Glock 21SF instead.
  5. Some of the lighter Federal EFMJ loads will be good for feed reliability and manageable recoil in a smaller gun. I'd stay away from any +p loads until you get used to the recoil of standard loads.
  6. I need to try that trick... I'd get a lower rate fo sho ;-)
  7. Jeez, that was a bitch move on their part... especially if you haven't had any claims. I have FB as well (my credit is probably too bad for them to target me for a rate increase), but I'm down for beating feet to voice my displeasure if that's how they're going to be. At one point I got State Farm quotes via the NRA that were competitive...
  8. Just take your time. A small gun like that, even 9mm, will buck a bit... but you're better off getting accustomed to how the gun you will carry handles. The tests are super easy especially if you've fired a fun before at all, so don't worry, the shooting part is not a race. Just look for the front sight each time you pull the trigger. My guess is that you'll do better than most in the class with you... my late wife took her test with a full bore .45 1911 and out shot everybody (including the person next to her with the .22). Relax behind the trigger, focus on the target, see your front sight and squeeze without closing your eyes, like you learned with the rifles and shotguns. You got this.
  9. That made my top ten list of ways I want to die. Awesome!
  10. My advice... buy a basic, complete upper and lower (or whole rifle) and shoot the piss out of it until you notice improvements that can be made by changing out parts for reliability and ergonomics. I promise that within a couple years (or less) that rifle will be part of you... then, you'll know what you want to build. Sounds like a lot of time invested, but that's way better than spending a ton of money on a setup that doesn't work, or fit you, before you are accustomed to the platform.
  11. Mine was a Jennings/Bryco 9mm... I'm lucky to not have a slide wedged between my lobes.
  12. I see the pin has already been pulled on that grenade... be careful!
  13. i use one like dat gat fo bangin out west yo it wuz tha shiz til i got sniched on an got it took

  15. I'm talking about a piston with no mechanical connection to the bolt other than a spring... Sequence: 1) Cartridge ignites 2) Bullet travels down the barrel 3) Gas block is pressurized 4) Piston moves rearward against spring tension between it and the carrier 5) Spring tension between piston and carrier exceeds the preload of the buffer spring as the piston continues rearward, and the carrier begins to move 6) Piston slows and carrier picks up rearward momentum as the bolt unlocks 7) Piston reverses motion as it reaches relief ports and gas pressure subsides, while the bolt carrier reaches the rear of its travel 8) Bolt, carrier and piston return to battery and load another cartridge The benefit is, the gas pressure can spike and store energy in the piston spring without moving the bolt carrier before the pressure has reduced, increasing dwell, plus, the rapid motion of the unfixed piston counteracts some initial recoil, while the bolt carrier becomes essentially the damper in a constant pressure reciprocating system, moving only as much as the piston spring stored energy is limited to... Essentially, you can over gas the piston and maintain a preloaded bolt velocity at any power level.
  16. I think a variation of an autoloading gas piston sprung directly on the bolt carrier, but without a solid connection, would create a self regulating system with extended dwell. Example: GAS BLOCK->]PISTON[///////]BOLT[///////] The piston will compress its spring first and impart a more steady impulse rearward into the bolt, throughout its travel, yet separating the reciprocating masses to eliminate harmonics.
  17. A few thoughts.... "Finishing Shot"? That's all I needed to hear to know this guy had crossed the line from self defense to execution. Premeditated? No. At least no more than you or I are premeditating violence against an intruder. The perpetrators had a choice whether or not to engage in criminal behavior, and as such are subject to any and all consequences for their actions, epecially while engaging in them. What this guy did wrong was not to shoot intruders in his house, or be prepared for them in response to previous criminal activity... His mistake was choosing to use deadly force after the threat was eliminated, out of vengeance or anger. That is not justifiable, morally or legally, and he should have gotten murder in the second degree. I sincerely hope that I am never the victim of actual or attempted violence by a minor, there is never a winner.
  18. If I was going all the way down to a standard 3oz carbine buffer, maybe, and even then it would only be an issue on full auto.
  19. Only gun I ever painted was an AR, and only because I use it and the finish was beaten up, so I took off the furniture and gave it a few sprays of flat black high temp header paint. If that wears off I'll be sending it off for a proper coating of some kind. But yeah, only paint it if it serves a purpose.
  20. Because of the extra power spring, my cycle rate is already significantly slower than even a rifle length system, plus with a very heavy buffer. Going from a 4.6oz H2 to a 4.3oz T2 will actually reduce recoil for me slightly... a lighter reciprocating unit will begin moving sooner and have less momentum at the rear of its travel, which is why race guns use light buffers and lightened carriers. Heavy buffers improve reliability when matched to the power of the ammunition, and springs mostly regulate bolt speed... One reason why full-size semi-auto pistols are more reliable than compact ones when properly sprung, because they have more reciprocating mass opposing the recoil impulse. With gas systems, you can either reduce mass and turn down the gas for fast lock times and low recoil, or increase mass and overgas for reliability.
  21. As seen in Zombie Apocalypse, an air horn is also great for distracting the undead while you make an escape.
  22. Sounds like a nice setup. I only have a two position gas block (piston gun), so what I did was increase buffer weight and spring weight combinations until the gun would short stroke with the gas in the suppressed setting without the suppressor mounted, using XM193. That ended up perfect for both settings when selected appropriately. I ended up with a +15% Wolff buffer spring and an H2 buffer, but I'm considering dropping buffer weight to the slightly lighter Spikes T2, if I dont go the JP route, just to give the bolt a little shorter lock time. As it is, recoil is as mild as I've ever felt in any short piston AR.
  23. It's technically an AOW. Essentially a short barreled shotgun with no stock, still an NFA item, but the stamp is only $5.
