  1. As seen in Zombie Apocalypse, an air horn is also great for distracting the undead while you make an escape.
  2. Sounds like a nice setup. I only have a two position gas block (piston gun), so what I did was increase buffer weight and spring weight combinations until the gun would short stroke with the gas in the suppressed setting without the suppressor mounted, using XM193. That ended up perfect for both settings when selected appropriately. I ended up with a +15% Wolff buffer spring and an H2 buffer, but I'm considering dropping buffer weight to the slightly lighter Spikes T2, if I dont go the JP route, just to give the bolt a little shorter lock time. As it is, recoil is as mild as I've ever felt in any short piston AR.
  3. It's technically an AOW. Essentially a short barreled shotgun with no stock, still an NFA item, but the stamp is only $5.
  4. A smart man once told me that even if you have no medical training, the medical kit you carry may likely not be used BY you, but be used ON you by a trained off-the-clock doctor, nurse, medic, etc, who finds you and stops to help but doesn't have their own equipment with them.
  5. Heh. Honestly, since I've been running the Wolff extra power spring with a light coating of grease, I can't hear my buffer at all... Even suppressed. So, replacing with a JP would simply be for reliability and recoil control, IF it helps with that at all.
  6. I've personally contemplated investing in a Serbu Shorty for a backpack/camping/truck gun, simply for the portability and ability to use many different loads.
  7. I suppose if you made a spreadsheet and calculated dimensions & weight vs. caliber and capacity, you might end up with a useful list, assuming all weapons are equally reliable... But I disagree with many of those listed above being 'best' in any number of scenarios, especially for every potential carrier.
  8. I've been eyeing one for my SBR for awhile, its just been hard to justify spending ~$150 to replace my current setup (which has never given a hint of a problem). Anyone have experience with this device? What do you think?
  9. Besides a lot of the items already mentioned, in smaller first aid kits for vehicle, camping and the medicine cabinet... I keep one of these in the supply locker: Elite Large Fully Stocked GI Issue Medic First Aid Kit Bag by Elite First Aid http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003H2EODW/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_4trytb11XQF5A
  10. All very valid concerns... My suggestion is to choose what you carry based on how effective you are with it, and choose how you carry based on everyday factors, like you described. I don't have any kids, but when I am around any (young nieces, nephews, etc.) I carry my Glock 19 in a Safariland ALS holster, which provides positive retention from removal except by me when I am drawing, regardless how much roughhousing or activity I partake in.
  11. I would hope it's not loaded at all when you're doing that...
  12. I greatly enjoyed reading the Nightcrawler/So There I Was Again series posted on TheHighroad forum which was then published as the Dead Six series.
  13. I'm of the mindset that if I'm going to be in control of a loaded weapon... Its going to be fully loaded, that way there is never a question of training and practice for weapon manipulation faced with an immediate threat. One in the chamber for carry/hd pistols, one in the chamber for the hd shotgun, one in the chamber for the hd rifle. Consistency is key, whatever you choose, ALWAYS do it that way. If you don't, you won't remember in a fight. Lemme ask those who don't want a round in the chamber, for giggles... Would you carry a modern double-action revolver with one cylinder empty? Think about it.
  14. By my estimation, it would take at least a 6ft barrel to burn an appreciable amount of that powder...
  15. I think the real potential is in propellant... Move away from nitrocellulose towards something with deflagration and expansion in the hypersonic range, such as an RDX compound. Get denser (tungsten, osmium, etc...) projectiles up to higher velocities from stronger cases through beryllium or magnetic barrels.
  16. At room distances, any buckshot load will penetrate several walls before it begins to disperse significantly or lose energy. Honestly, a .223 rifle loaded with a fairly light bullet will be the safest choice for minimizing penetration through building materials... Birdshot might possibly penetrate fewer walls (if the shot has time to leave the cup, say after 10ft), but may also be significantly less likely to stop an invader past that distance. I would never recommend bird shot as an HD round, but if you know that you will be using a shotgun at little more than contact distances in a small space, and are willing to accept it might not stop them (there are plenty of verified shootings with bird shot to research), it's an option. I own several boxes of 2-3/4" steel T-shot (goose loads), which I keep mainly for mid-size four-legged critters, but would do in a pinch for sub-10yd defensive use in an OUTDOOR environment (steel bounces back at you from hard surfaces). Lead BB loads would be acceptable, Hevishot makes a tungsten BB coyote load. Just remember, you are giving up a lot of lethality once the shot leaves the cup.
  17. I've always heard the Tavor was the best bullpup out there... My experience with bullpups is limited to the FS2000 and AUG (neither of which would I choose or trust in a fight), but the Israelis love the TAR-21, and they have good taste...
  18. I accept that. Far be it from me to know better than you how best to defend your own home. My intention was to make sure we remember not to what-if the most effective solution to death.
  19. It's aluminum... Interesting... Probably just fine for everything except continuous full auto.
  20. I got hooked up with one from the first run as long as I promised to pimp it out... Mine didn't even come in packaging. So far it works just as well as the 3, at nearly half the weight.
  21. Not trying to derail the thread... But how has your reliability been with the CX4? I had one when they were first introduced and it never went through a whole magazine without a stoppage. I'd be very interested whether they got out the kinks, I might give one another go.
  22. As far as concussion... With no muzzle device, the difference is spectacular to say the least. My 10.5" with naked muzzle produced a seemingly basketball sized fireball, and the 12" isn't much better. A flashider helps with the fireball, and so will some brakes (to some degree, although with a noticeable increase in concussion). I ended up with a Noveske KX5 Flaming Pig, which works wonders... Subjectively, my 12" gun with the KX5 is more well-behaved than a 16" gun with a birdcage fh. Of course, my overall length is only a couple inches shorter than a naked 16" gun.
  23. If size wasn't an issue we'd tote rifles... Realistically though, every scenario is different and equipment needs change with environment, I prefer to steer clear of 'one size fits all' solutions.
