I can't carry at work, or even have one in the truck, so workdays are out of the question... But other than that I make an effort to carry anytime I leave the house for a non-prohibited location.

SEE ALL open sight. Anyone seen or tried one yet?
molonlabetn replied to jaxjohn419's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
My assumption is that the effective sight radius is a function of how much the triangle is magnified... Probably more useful on a pistol or a shotgun than a rifle with decent ghost ring night sights already. -

I'll make a video or at least picture review once it comes in... Will try it on the 1014 and the AR both, hopefully it's here by this weekend. -
Awww damn, Bloomberg will be all over that one... weaponized transfats?! Better chug a big gulp while reloading

First time I've heard of that, but I'm about to order one for my M1014 now... Came to $90 with the code and shipping -
I started hanging around again just recently, it's good to be back... and to know I was missed. My absence has nothing to do with TGO, was just a rough few years personally. I tell you who I miss, is Marswolf. Shannon was a good dude. As far as I'm concerned, he took a bullet for me.

Worn out AR-15 bolt carrier or ?
molonlabetn replied to Luke E.'s topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Sounds like a weak buffer spring. I've had rifles do that when overgassed or when the buffer spring is weak or the buffer was too light. Why it's only doing it with one of the carriers is strange... Are the carriers identical? -
My first proper handgun was a Beretta 92F, with which I took my permit class in 2003, so I'm partial to a full size 9mm as a first pistol. You'll shoot more, plain and simple. If a Glock, get a 17... If a Sig, a P226... if a Beretta, a 92 will treat you right... If a CZ, get a 75... If a S&W, an M&P full size... If a Springfield, an XD9 Tactical. etc. Start with that short list and see which one fits your hand best, manipulate the controls and see which feels natural, then buy it and a couple cases of ammo, and shoot the piss out of it.

Anyone had/have one? Tell me what you think of it. I'm intrigued by the concept; functionally just a more compact CQ/T (which I do like), with no magnification... But not intrigued enough to spend Aimpoint/Eotech money on it without a good reason. What say ye?

One of the best comparisons I've heard yet

Defensive shotgun- Do you have one? What do you load it with?
molonlabetn replied to CQB Elite's topic in Long Guns
Benelli M4, six 000 3" Remington Buckshot in the tube, one ghost-loaded on the carrier, one in the chamber, and six more on the side-saddle. -
I lived in Antioch for a year... I don't recommend it.

Worth a shot... that is really strange to be beating the buffer up so bad after just a few hundred rounds, too. If its over gassed that bad. Boosting reciprocating weight and spring tension will only hide the problem, keep an eye out for bolt/cam wear. Adjustable gas block is the true solution in that case.
-
If the buffer bumper is being destroyed, that would be considered a function issue, and I would second a heavier buffer. I thought we were just talking about reducing recoil...? Is your buffer spring worn out, perhaps? We are talking about a 5.56/.223 AR, correct?
-
When I'm running my 10.5†direct impingement setup I use a standard buffer spring and carbine buffer, it eats everything, albeit a bit overgassed when suppressed. When I swap to the 12" gas piston barrel, I use an extra power buffer spring and H2 buffer to get nearly identical recoil/feed characteristics; and can turn down the gas when the suppressor is mounted. So, unless you're actually having function issues, or have changed the gas system, leave it alone.

I know right?! Took a bit of a hiatus, but the internets beckoned, and here I am again. Good to see a bunch of the original crew is still around.

The development of .40 was purely administrative... after the Miami shooting the FBI didn't want to admit that an adequate cartridge or load was already available (9mm/.45acp/.357magnum), and had chosen to not to issue it, so they developed a problem to solve with the 10mm (which actually is a great cartridge)... but since qualification scores plummeted with full 10mm loads, they had to turn it into a relative powderpuff with no more power than existing autoloading pistol cartridges, and then stuffed it into 9mm handgun frames, reducing capacity. And so, we've ended up where they should have gone all along, a high-capacity 9mm handgun which is easy to control, cheap to shoot, and equally effective with proper bullets at the velocities 9mm was originally intended.

I usually remove my M3X when I shoot my G21 at the range.

SBR & Terminal Ballistics / Fragmentation ?
molonlabetn replied to SupaRice's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
I own a Lewis Machine & Tool MRP, with 10.5" direct impingement and 12" gas piston barrels chambered for 5.56, both are 1-7 twist. Here's my take. An SBR is a compromise... We either wanted less weight/length, or wanted to mount a suppressor and retain some compactness and balance... Thing is, short barrels simply offer less time for a bullet to accelerate, and result in loss of effective range. You have a few choices... either you simply live with the reduced effectiveness, because the gun is intended for sub-100 yard engagements and you are a super-ninja who can home in on a badguy's CNS, because shot placement trumps everything. Or, you switch calibers, since now that you have a lighter gun on your shoulder, your need to lighten that heavy wallet off of your butt in order to maintain balance... My recommendation is, you can just do what I and many others have, and keep practicing with cheap .223 and 5.56 (or .22 conversion), and invest in some good 75gr TAP or 77gr SMK ammunition for the fighting. Those bullets have thinner jackets, longer ogives, and thus will tumble and fragment at SBR velocities, the data is out there. -
Would you trade your favorite polymer pistols....
molonlabetn replied to Links2k's topic in Handguns
I already have the 1911 I want... I built it for little more than the cost of a single new Glock or XD, and it shoots as well or better than any of the +2 grand 1911s I'm familiar with. As far as trading a few Glocks for one, I wouldn't do it just because I have traded away too many guns I wish now that I'd kept... and though I have little fondness for Glocks (yet I own 2 of them), it doesn't seem worth it to me unless just saving for a high-end 1911 you REALLY want is out of the question. But, I'm the type who'd rather put that kind of money towards another suppressor and/or another SBR upper. -
If it were me: Ammunition and/or a range membership. ...not that there's anything wrong with more guns

The new law exempts law enforcement. Under the previous law it was illegal for cops to carry in a posted location unless they were performing their duties (there on a call)... on-duty or off-duty didn't matter.
