The Kel-Tec. Its a practical gun, you can carry it, shoot it, whatever... The Llama is a 1911 knock off with little factory or aftermarket parts/accessory support... and some of them (not sure of this model specifically since my experience is limited) have reliability issues. If it was me, and these were my two choices, and I was determined to spend money either way, I'd get the kel-tec.

Yes. Here is a good load you can carry and practice with: http://www.doubletapammo.net/index.php?route=product/product&path=303_340&product_id=236 100gr fmj with flash suppressed powder at ~1000 fps... That'll reach vitals. Most .380 hollow points won't. I got to try some of this when it came out... Its stout and feeds reliably. I would carry this in a .380 if I had one.

If you feel confident in stripping it to the trigger, just give it a good cleaning and give the moving parts a very light coating of lube. I didn't see anything wrong with mine so I couldn't tell you if the problem is obvious, if it exists in your gun, though I imagine some parts may simply not freely move like they should.

Recommendations on a bolt action 223 under $800?
molonlabetn replied to polecat's topic in Long Guns
Most bolt action .223s I've seen come with a 1-12" twist, for light >55gr bullets. You can get Savage and Remington in 1-9" for sure though, which mine is, and it stabilizes 69gr very well. I'd love to find an out of the box .223 bolt gun with a 1-7" twist so I can use the same 77gr stuff as my AR, for more serious shooting. -
I worked in downtown Nashville for about a year, used to eat lunch at the McD's across from what used to be Hippodrome... There was always a handful asking for money around there. Only ever had two takers out of many many offers to provide food... One was a guy fresh out of jail and the other was a homeless woman and her young daughter (broke my damn heart).

Oh I wasn't talking about the Tavor specifically, just how many times I've traded a good gun for a supposedly better gun that wasn't.

Law enforcement can hold you 72hrs before charging you or releasing you, is my understanding. You must be informed of why you were arrested and then what the charges are, so that you can retain counsel.

Those are dangerous words, which I personally have regretted after countless firearms trades/compromises in the past... Find one to shoot before buying, no matter how awesome it sounds.

The most dangerous kind ;-)

I want a beer...

My understanding is that the issue isn't with the geometry of the trigger mechanism, but an excess of 'gunk' used to hold small parts together which can prevent proper engagement... All they do is clean them, test them, stamp them, and ship them back. I've had mine apart, it's clean... If nothing else, it never has a round chambered unless it is pointing downrange anyways.

Also, didn't want to leave without adding... I love nature, it's delicious!

After looking closely, it almost looks like somebody's boa got out... But its probably a corn snake, not a copperhead like I've ever seen other than the colors.

AR 223/5.56 Scope for 600yds or less
molonlabetn replied to lshel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
The first scope I put on my .223 Remington 700 was a Sightmark 10-40x56 that I got from opticsplanet for under $300. Worked great. Ended up with a fixed SWFA SS 20X since I never used the lower magnification for target shooting. I'd recommend either for a target rifle. -
My most recent renewal came via the TN Dept of Safety... I'm wondering what DHS has to do with any of this? Unless I now have a carry permit good in any state, Federally granted, DHS can kiss my ass.

Dave is right, even though .223 will do 600, even 1000yd with the right setup, you're better off going with at least a 7mm beyond 500yd. I have a bolt .223 solely for precision shots under 300yd with a suppressor so I can shoot all day without earmuffs on. I wouldn't attempt anything repeatable past 500 with it without better optics and ammo. I guess what we're saying, to get 600yd performance, you're going to spend money either way you go. -
This is just my personal opinion, and it is born from a lack of experience with being shot with or without any level of body armor... but I would vastly prefer to be lighter on my feet in a fight than hope they only hit me square in the chest and nowhere else. If I was going to carry armor that I was confident in, it would be so heavy it would need wheels (or tracks)

As mentioned by others, the bolt/carrier parts will wear out faster... Particularly the bolt itself at the lugs and cam pin hole... and the cam pin itself. Also, the carrier might be more prone to tilt, or the gas key could loosen. Plus, there will be more felt recoil because the bolt-carrier is being slammed rearward while there is significant chamber pressure. Could arguably wear out your buffer spring faster. The lightest recoiling ARs are those with stock weight springs and a light buffer, with the gas turned down so it just has enough to cycle... Those of us with intentionally overgassed guns compensate with higher tension buffer springs and heavier buffers to slow the action down and reduce recoil, while keeping a margin of power for reliability even when the gun is dirty. The idea is to balance the forces, whether high gas and high mass/spring tension, or low gas and standard parts. The choice depends on whether the gun will be a safe queen powder puff target rifle or something you may fight with. ..oh yeah, and more gas means the bolt carrier gets hotter, will burn off lube faster (of it's not a piston gun)

Savage for sure. I personally own a Remington 700 in .223, and I wish I'd gone with a Savage... not that Savage would be any better, overall, but it's at least equivalent, for much much less money. -
I'm less concerned with wondering if I CAN shoot in a given situation, and more with being prepared to if I MUST... If I use deadly force, you can bet it wasn't a choice. In the real events described, I only know 2 things... I wouldn't have gone upstairs, and there would have been some buckshot discharged when they came down.

I can consistently ring a 200yd gong with the 1911, and I hold over roughly 2ft (the diameter of the gong), but it drops easily 6ft at 300yd when attempting that shot. 45 drops less than a foot at 100yd though, usually just have to aim at the top of the target. At 70yd a 9mm would likely drop less than 3-4in from point of aim, depending on the load.

Unless there is a loved one upstairs who I need to defend, I'm not going up there after a bad guy. I'll be behind cover on the ground floor waiting for the police to arrive or for the intruder to enter the funnel of the stairs, coming towards me.
-
One of my favorite pistols was an old 92F which I put well over 10k rounds through (back when 9mm was only $5 a box) I literally wore that gun out, and was very sad to retire it. I will get another one.

Local politician offered to go shooting with me.

Yep, sure was, out at the National Guard range. I'm sure there's pictures somewhere And it was 2009, I misremembered... And I didn't make it into the photoshoot apparently, they probably figured I'd break the camera: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/12886-tn-house-of-representatives-range-day-aedc-2009/?fromsearch=1 -

Judd Matheny does a charity shoot every year. I RSO'd one year ('10) when it was in Tullahoma and sponsored by Hero Gear, that was fun.
