That's absolutely true... Im talking about physics and aerodynamics; muzzle velocity directly influences projectile rpm at a given twist, projectile rpm in turn determines how much gyroscopic force is available to counteract the aerodynamic forces. Small variances make a large difference... A bullet doesn't need to make a full rotation in the barrel as long as its exit rpm is sufficient to ensure stability, conversely, a bullet can make multiple rotations in a long barrel with insufficient twist to ensure stability. Barrel length affects muzzle velocity. Period. The rpm of a 77gr bullet from a 1-9 twist 10" barrel does not equal the rpm of a 77gr bullet from a 1-9 twist 20" barrel even though the twist is the same, rpm is determined by muzzle velocity. At some point the barrel length (and muzzle velocity) is low enough to not provide sufficient bullet rpm to fully stabilize for the duration of flight.

Open carry advocates prompt Chipotle posting

My understanding is that these guys have no affiliation with any local gun group... Probably as fake as the Sandy Hook actors. -

I agree. Yet it begs the question... Is the problem the guys, or the rifles? -

I think (and attempt to look up the facts about) owning armor-piercing PISTOL ammunition is restricted by federal law... If you have a PS90, I'd bet its fine.

Open carry advocates prompt Chipotle posting

Back of the bus, back in the closet, cover it up, no one wants to see that... Yeesh. I get it that these doofuses were just looking for attention, and I certainly believe a business has the right to choose their clientele (from wedding cake bakers to restaurant chains)... But let's not lose focus on the fact that what we all want is acceptance of the individual right to bear arms, etc... So instead of generalized bashing (which accomplishes nothing), we should try to promote RESPONSIBLE activity whether seen or unseen by the general public. These guys were dumb. Let's not react like idiots and stoop to the level of kissing in front of Chik-fil-a over Chipotle's reaction. Also, lets not throw everyone under the bus who doesn't always carry concealed, either; we're not all looking for attention or to make a scene. I suppose we should all cover our NRA or other firearms related shirts/stickers too... Someone might feel threatened... C'mon people, there are ways to go about any style of carry responsibly, it just takes more common sense than the guys on the story had. -
I have trained and practiced reloading with one hand... Not something I'd want to have to start a conflict by doing.
-
I prefer to not assume that both of my hands will be free. If you carry with an empty chamber, at least practice chambering a round one-handed.

It does if the bullet does not achieve enough velocity (read rpms) to stabilize... Or maintain enough velocity at the range you are shooting. Muzzle velocity at a given twist rate affects stability... Barrel length affects velocity. This can be tested easily by shooting a 77gr bullet through a 10" 1-9 twist barrel then a 20" 1-9 barrel at distance, the lower velocity projectile will destabilize first every time.

Are you using a lightened bolt carrier and/or buffer? That can exacerbate minor overgassing... Either way, an adjustable gas block is the way to go. You are overheating and beating up your bolt... might crack at the cam pin hole eventually, is all. Would probably take thousands of rounds to actually break.
-
In cold conditions cartridges do not develop as much pressure and velocity is reduced... bullet rpm is directly related to muzzle velocity and twist, and bullet rpm determines the gyroscopic force of the bullet to maintain orientation. Higher velocity requires less twist for a given moment of inertia (diameter & density of the bullet)... Also, cold temps and/or high humidity affect aerodynamics to adversely affect stability, sometimes enough to overcome the gyroscopic stability. Also... Bullet construction and accuracy have more affect on effectiveness than sheer mass or velocity, in most cases. I doubt that a 77gr bullet would succeed where an equivalent 69gr failed.

SW M&P10 - Spring/Buffer make Kling/Klang noise
molonlabetn replied to lshel's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
You can lightly grease the buffer spring if it bothers you. -
Only real difference (barrel quality aside) would be if you plan on shooting 75gr or heavier bullets. 1-9 will stabilize up to 69gr reliably, and even some 75-77gr in the right conditions, but I wouldn't count on it in a sub-20" barrel.

Hmmm, If your gonna test body armor . . .

Stupidity is deadly... And this was like high-capacity stupidity. Assault Stupidity! Ban it. -
I degrease steel parts with power purple then throw them in the ultrasonic cleaner filled with wd-40 for a bit with the rest of the gun.

If I have to leave home on a long distance trek during a zombie apocalypse: 1) LMT 12" Piston MRP (suppressed) 2) One of the Glocks 3) The bumper of my truck Or, If I just have to go across town, in familiar territory: 1) Remington 700 LTR .223 (suppressed) 2) Benelli M4 3) Aluminum bat or collapsible baton If I can stay home I'm using everything.

KNS Push Button Takedown & Pivot Pins
molonlabetn replied to molonlabetn's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Rear detent pin hole was too wallowed out to go back with new springs and pins, tried that and the detent would angle outward with the takedown when trying to remove it. Got KNS pins in there now, problem solved... But I see now how they could get lost, since they aren't captured, I'll be buying some spares for sure. Thanks -
Yeah, none of that's true... Was fun to write though. I drive a Dodge.

I was born in the cab of a '72 F100, mom was hitchhiking from Milwaukee to Savannah and I was a pit stop. Cauterized my cord nub with the cigarette lighter. Been a Chevy guy ever since.

Coming to realize how big an >4 inch blade really is
molonlabetn replied to JAB's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
When I carry fixed blade, its a Schrade SCHF12. It's huge, harder to conceal than my Glock 19. But I'm usually camping so that's not an issue. Every day? Hell no, give me a 2" folder. -

Are we still talking about knives ;-P -
That is exactly true... Nothing can replace trigger time with your blood pumping. Push yourself in practice and your reaction in dire circumstance will be more realistic. Anybody can perforate static paper when calm, regardless the range.

This. Well put.

This past weekend I stripped my SBR down to recoat the upper and lower flat black silicone ceramic, and cure it in the oven... Got that done and all back together when the rear takedown pin locked solid because I failed to put some grease in the detent channel... and being an idiot punched it out instead taking the rear plate back off. Result: I broke the detent pin in half and chipped some of the receiver material away at the pin hole. I've got spare pins and whatnot, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with KNS push button pins (or anything else which would eliminate the detents), and recommend them; or if I should go back with stock pins and detents? I'd really like to avoid any further damage to my SBR lower by putting stress in the compromised detent pin channel.
