  1. I would hate to see this.  I've lived in counties that required it and hated it.  I now pay $24 a year to register a vehicle, no county wheel tax, no emissions testing.  If it were made mandatory what are people supposed to do that own vehicles that will not pass?  My old pickup just ain't gonna pass.  When I rebuilt the engine years ago I took all of the emissions control stuff off because I lived in a county were it was not required.  I might put 1,000 miles on that truck a year.  I think we need to speak up on this one and let our representatives know that we do not want emissions testing?  Seriously, how much pollution is the small percentage of vehicles that couldn't pass producing?
  2. 129 is pretty desolate after dark.  I left a friend's house in Robinsville, NC one morning at about 3 O'clock and drove 47 miles before seeing another vehicle.
  3. Ok I'm going to need all of the home addresses of the members of Congress.
  4. Got this one at Chilhowie Dam the other night.
  5. Fontana Dam is the highest dam East of the Mississippi River. The dam uses two overflow tunnels that are each about 30 feet in diameter to run excess water off of the lake. At the bottom the water hits a concrete "ramp" and shoots 150 feet into the air and lands approximately 450 feet down stream. It makes for a spectacular sight. I took these pictures of it yesterday. To my knowledge the overflow system has only been used 3 or 4 times since the dam was built in the 1940's.
  6. ^^^This!  If you can get more than a couple of miles from asphalt it won't seem like you are at a tourist convention!
  7. Gander Mountain in Turkey Creek off of I-40 right as you come into West Knoxville.  Exit 368 if I'm not mistaken, but I could be mistaken.  Unless you are getting into the back country I wouldn't worry about it.  I spend 50 hours a week in bear country and if I carried bear spray I would have probably removed it from the holster twice in the last 3 years and not actually used it either time.
  8. I've seen them recently in the $300-350 range.
  9. I doubt it as it is a cap and ball.
  10. Just thought I'd pass along this tidbit.  Many years ago I read or watched something from Ted Nugent, love him or hate him I believe this.  Uncle Ted made it a point to wear camo to represent himself as a hunter as he went about his daily business.  He also made it a point to hold doors for people, greet people, smile at them, ask them how they are doing, etc.  Just general nice guy stuff.  The same principles apply for open carry.
  11. Looks like it's been a long while since we've had any kind of EDC thread activity around here. Got bored this morning and decided to take pics of mine. Glock 23, Smith and Wesson assisted opening knife, wallet, keys, ear plugs (in the case,) Skeeter Stik, and a Bic lighter. I know that's a little light compared to what some carry but it seems to meet my needs well. I also carry a backpack all day that has other supplies.
  12. I have one that looks horrible to the point that I can't even make out what it originally was, it's about 8 years old.  Drunken mistake, thankfully it is hidden if I'm wearing a t shirt.  I have nothing against them, just not for me.  I've seen several references in this thread about people with tattoos and prioritizing their expenses.  My wife and I were talking about that just the other day.  We were swimming in Monroe County and noticed that most everyone in the river had lots of tattoos, and not many teeth, no offense to anyone from Monroe County.  I just can't figure being in your twenties and spending money on tattoos (okay most didn't look like they had spent very much) but not spending money to keep your teeth.
  13. Peanut butter sandwich and a bottle of water for me today.  I'm always busy on Saturdays and don't have time to cook.  Never cared for PB&Js, nothing against jelly I just don't like it on my peanut butter.  Most weekdays I cook of reheat food on the manifold of my car.  I've actually come up with some pretty good stuff.
  14. Slightly odd that a National Park Service ranger is arresting him.  Maybe Freedom Plaza is a National Park?
  15. I highly recommend Bennett's Barbecue for Breakfast, lunch, and supper.  Best breakfast in Gatlinburg IMO.  Another fun and inexpensive activity is river tubing in Townsend.
  16. This is my turf.  Lots of stuff to do, less so with small children.  Clingman's Dome, Newfound Gap, and go over to Cherokee and watch the elk makes for a good family day.  A trip around Cades Cove is a must with the family.  I highly suggest getting there early (7-8 preferably) before the traffic.  The gates open at 7 except for Wednesdays and Saturdays when it opens at 10.  Ober Gatlinburg has a lot of family activities (they also prohibit carry.)  The strip in Gatlinberg and Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville for that matter is a tourist trap, the Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg is pretty neat though.  You could spend weeks in the park if that is your kind of thing, tons of history in the area if you like that kind of thing.  This is off the top of my head, feel free to ask me any other questions.  BTW several GSMNP campgrounds are currently closed, check the park's website to make sure the campground you want is open.
  17. Nope wasn't me.    On another note a friend scored 500 rounds of 9mm from the Tazewell Walmart the other day.
  18. I asked a LEO friend to run numbers for me once.  He agreed to do it but said that if the gun was stolen I would have to give it to him.  The gun in question belonged to a friend who suspected that it was stolen and was willing to turn it over if it was, it just so happened to be clean.  I had a Bersa stolen from me a number of years ago in Wilson County.  It took 3 years but I got a call one day that they had recovered it.  The detective was great to work with.  It had been recovered in a traffic stop in Davidson County.  They had had it in evidence for about a year, I was just glad to get it back in functioning condition.  Man was that thing dirty, I would estimate literally thousands of rounds had been fired though it.  I just wish I could have figured out who stole it from me because I know it was someone that I knew.
  19. There was a thread here not too long ago about ATF agents visiting FFLs and downloading the 4473's onto a thumb drive and taking the files with them to look at later instead of there at the FFL like they should.  Seems that there is a lot of stories floating around of late about ATF agents (AKA the government) doing what ever they want with complete disregard to the law.  Someone needs to be held accountable.
  20. Cumberland Mountain Riders Association in Winchester, I think there is about 17,000 acres out there.   http://www.cmrariders.com/
  21. I heard this morning that Hernandez jerseys are going for thousands of dollars on Ebay.  It makes me sick to live in a world with people who would pay that much for something like that.
  22. Good find, thanks for sharing!
  23. Didn't see the story but if I had to leave my gun in my vehicle I wouldn't want other people to know that it was there.
  24.   Took the words right out of my mouth!
  25. As a former Cookevillian I can't say that this exactly spoiled my morning.  Tommy Burks death was a very sad time in Tennessee. http://www.wbir.com/news/article/278315/2/Victims-friend-Good-riddance-to-convicted-killer-Byron-Looper
