  1. You can do more than teach or work at a large corporation with a Ph.D. It depends on what you want to do and how you market the degree. In engineering, the Ph.D. can be used to show you know how to work with large, unbounded problems and come up with workable solutions. My recommendation is to make sure you know what you want to do with the Ph.D. Being called Dr. is cool but if that is the only reason for getting your Ph.D., it ain't worth the effort required to get the degree!
  2. Sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers. I lost my mother to cancer many years ago. I was only 25 when she passed away. Losing a parent certainly puts other things in perspective.
  3. I got mine today. One is already on my safe. I still haven't figured out where the rest will go. Maybe one on my laptop? KahrMan - our mailman probably was wondering why all the TGO envelops on his route...
  4. I'm in Tennessee right now. I'll be glad to pick it up for you...
  5. Welcome home! Enjoy the weeks off before your other job starts. You've been serving you country for years - you deserve a couple weeks vacation. Spend it spoiling the kids and wasting ammo! Thanks for your service and I'm glad to know your back home safely.
  6. Its like when a government department gets a smaller increase than they asked for and call it a budget 'cut' - even though they got more $ than the year before. The local news media goes right along with it and reports it as a budget cut.
  7. Glad to know you kept your sense of humor through all this. Guns and Leather is always busy. However, I've always had plenty of opportunities to talk to a salesman, fondle a pistol, etc. My experience has been that if you step up to the counter and stay in the same spot for a couple of minutes, someone will be by to ask if they can help. Most of the guys seem to be able to handle more than one customer (especially lookers) at a time. The very first gun I purchased from GnL was a Sig that had a really attractive price on it. I found the exact same gun about a year later at another store (that's closer to me) but it was $125 more expensive. And that was without the 3% cash discount. Combine great prices with their great customer service (at least that's always been my experience) and that's why they get my business.
  8. Note to self: raise big stink next time in Greenbrier store so Metalhead will pay my TBI fee... For some reason, there always seems to be a TBI fee involved when I'm there...
  9. I think this should have been in the current thread on Sarah Palin's Alaska and the (aborted) camping trip involving Kate + 8.
  10. From the link: "The holiday season is fast approaching. Across the state students and their families will be celebrating various holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Kwanza, Eid al Adha, Winter Solstice, Christmas and New Years." You said Christmas twice. I like Christmas.
  11. Check out HP Deals, Computer Coupons and Bargains - GotApex?. They aggregate coupons and deals from several different places/vendors. I've bought both desktops and laptops that I found deals on through them. They just give you the information and links to the vendor - you purchase directly from the vendor.
  12. I got out to get coffee a few hours ago. Talked the wife into going with me. Roads were slick, but not too bad. I've got a Jeep and can get around pretty well. Problem was too many people who have no clue were on the road. I saw at least 6 cars in the ditch and followed a couple of cars that were scared to be out - not a good situation. We made one quick stop and headed home. Should be a fun commute for everyone in Nashville tomorrow morning. But, its not snowing in the attic (at least that I know of).
  13. I'd suggest finding a ham club near you. Most hams will be more than happy to give you some guidance on a rig, etc. They also can show you some hardware so you can get a better idea of what you want/need. Basically, whatever you plan on doing will drive what type of equipment you need. The geek speak comes in, in part, due to all the options you have with ham radio.
  14. IMO, the trust is definitely worth it. I went through one of the TGO sponsoring vendors for my trust. Super quick and easy and well worth the cost. PM me for more details if you want.

  17. Thanks Jamie. That is much more appropriate!
  18. I've been a Tech since the early 90s. I never upgrade mainly due to being too lazy to learn morse code. Since they eliminated the requirement, I've been too lazy to upgrade. Maybe I should read a book this winter and take the General test...
  19. flurries require all able bodied Nashvillians to report to Kroger to buy at least 3 gallons of milk and 4 loaves of bread (per person, of course). I've got a Jeep. Last year when we had 5" or so, I went out for pizza. My wife and neighbors thought I was crazy but it was a blast. I waited until everyone was home from work (or stuck for the night) and had no problems going anywhere. I think I saw one other car the whole time I was out.
  20. Sometimes they get lucky and get pretty close to the next day's weather. I was in Nashville when they predicted light, afternoon snow. By lunch time we had 7" on the ground! For those of you that don't live around Nashville, 7" of snow might as well be 70" the way people drive around here.
  21. 'climate change' means that whenever the weather is not exactly at the long term average, the tree huggers get to take lots of tax dollars from us to save the rainbow tailed crawdad that lives in only 100,000,000 streams in the US. It drives me crazy that they use any deviation from the average to push a political agenda. We can't (accurately) predict the weather more the a couple of days out; how in the world are supposed to measure/predict the climate?
  22. I'd like to know what would happen if we quit paying for just the unconstitutional stuff the government does. Our tax bills would go way, way down.
  23. Yep, I had forgotten about that. Based on the landscape, Rick should have looked like a thin Grizzly Adams when we awoke. So either 1) the vegetation grew at exaggerated rates, 2) Rick somehow shaved himself while in a coma, or 3) the producers messed up...
  24. In Kentucky, everyone pays a yearly personal property tax on their automobiles. When they go to renew their registration, they pay a rate based on the value of the car. So they pay sales tax when they buy a new car and they are taxed based on its value every year they register it. And they have a 6% sales tax and a 6% income tax. Government has an unquenchable thirst for money.
