  1.     I believe the difference between a drone and a hobby RC aircraft is the capability for autonomous flight.  Anything that doesn't have to be under direct control of an operator 100% of the time is a considered a drone and the FAA wants to regulate them.  I don't think that's unreasonable.  As for being used for commercial purposes, the government just wants to tax that somehow and it's fallen into the FAA's lap.   I'm not sure why the media has made such a big deal over this, other than getting their peepee whacked for using them commercially.    http://www.faa.gov/uas/publications/model_aircraft_operators/
  2.     No, a stand of trees does NOT make an adequate back stop.  I had bullets bounce off my house and my neighbor's house that were fired into a large brush pile about 1/4 mile away.  Dirt makes a good back stop.    I find the hunting guide somewhat confusing with regard to shotguns.  It says you can't use No. 4 or smaller shot, but doesn't say either way on bigger shot.  You can use slugs.      http://www.tn.gov/twra/pdfs/huntguide.pdf
  3. Think about which way your garage faces.  Will it be visible to anyone who drives by if the garage door is open?  If so, can you conceal it?  A friend just throws an old bed sheet over his, it helps keep dust out too.    I don't know how full your garage is, but it would sure be annoying to have to climb over and/or move stuff every time I wanted to open it.    If you put it in the house... can you put it somewhere house guests (or the UPS guy) won't immediately see it?  With that much weight, I'd definitely add some support to the sub-floor and put some sort of bearing plate under it to help distribute the load over a larger area.  What type of floors do you have and what condition are they in?  If you think the flooring/carpet might need to be replaced, you're going to have to move the safe to do it.  Just a few things to consider.
  4. Man... that sucks.  Can you file a shipping damage claim?
  5. Indeed.
  6. It'll be fine. It's more acidic to dissolve the copper faster than the regular stuff. I don't think I'd use it anywhere but the bore.
  7.     Thank you for thinking about the weight of the stuff inside the safe.    Controlling humidity inside the safe is easy, it's outside you need to think about.  I'd plan for some sort of vapor barrier between the concrete and the safe.
  8.     ... that's why I said "for adults" instead of "adult movie".  But yes, grown-ups would have been a better word.  And yes, Bad Santa is pretty darn funny.  Any time I think of that movie, one particular line always comes to mind first....
  9. I have an acquaintance who's a federal marshal.  He was involved in apprehending a criminal who was shot in the forehead with a suppressed MP5 from about 10 ft away.  The bullet bounced off and didn't knock the guy down (big dude).   I recall seeing the guy's mug shot with a nasty bruise just to the left of dead center.
  10. People who would do such things don't deserve to be parents.  That problem has been fixed.  I hope they enjoy hell. That's all I'm gonna say.
  11. My wife got a DVD with a collection of all the old clay-mation Christmas movies. The kids have watched them several times already. Christmas Story is the best ever kids holiday movie. "The Ref" with Dennis Leary and Kevin Spacey is the best one for adults. It's hilarious.
  12. We've used Slo Dea kennel for our lunatic dog for several years. They're super nice. The "kennel" is a converted house so each dog (or two if they're from the same owner) gets it's own room. Big fenced yard to run around too. http://www.slodeakennel.com
  13. I don't have one, but all accounts I've read/heard say they're quite good.  No issues.
  14. Wish he'd play around here.  I'm yet to see his Christmas show or TSO.   :yuck:    I'd liked him back from the Stray Cat's days.
  15.     I lived in that world for a number of years. TQM, 6 Sigma, Poka Yoke, Kaizan, VOC, T-tests, ad nasuem....   Those are a bunch of wonderful concepts that, when applied intelligently, can significantly improve a wide variety of processes.  Or what I like to call, the stuff any process engineer worth his salt had been doing long before the bosses paid the consultants an obsene amount of money to give it a fancy name.  I escaped for a while but unfortunately it's begun to invade my current world.  So far, the results have bordered on laughable.    If there are people involved, there will be mistakes.  Anyone who says otherwise is selling something.  Make something idiot-proof, they'll make a better idiot.
  16. 100% prevent when you're making millions? Not if you plan to make money at it. A statistician would tell you that it's physically impossible if you make more than one. There's an expontentially inverse relationship between scrap rate and cost to reduce it. The law of diminishing returns, if you will. In high volume work, there's a point at which it's cheaper to accept some amount of scrap than it is to reduce it.
  17. Had a similar thought. The HCP and showing off a carry purse would give the impression that she's not the bleeding heart liberal type. Can't imagine that any of her peers on the school board would approve of such things and would rat her out at the first opportunity....
  18. I see what you did there...
  19. Nice choice. And there's no such thing as too big (that's what she said).
  20. I suspect both will be beyond my means, but ...   I like the look of the blade on the Spindrift, but the scales look... strange.  They may be wonderful in the hand, but they look odd on the computer screen.  The black-on-black version the Brend is darn sweet.
  21. I'm guessing the doctors aren't required (or obligated) to inform their patient that they've been labelled as such.  The patient finds out when the Gestapo shows up to confiscate.  So much for innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.  One can now be proven guilty in a doctor's office.  Don't get me wrong, I'm all for keeping guns away from the insane asylum, but I lack confidence that this would be handled appropriately.
  22. That does seem like quite a stretch of PC.  Where was the school board meeting?  And why was a cop there (is that normal?)?
  23. Yep, interesting stuff.  Thanks.
  24. As folks have said, it depends on a lot of things... type of construction and location within the room are the big concerns.    If you're on a crawlspace (or 2nd floor) on an outside wall that's supported directly to the foundation, then you can likely double the 40psf rating with no issues.  Me being the nerdy engineer type, I'd add support under it regardless, as I did with my aquarium.    If the safe has feet, they'll likely sink into normal flooring to some degree.  Adding some sort of bearing plate between the feet and the floor can prevent that.   If you put it on a bare concrete slab, you must have some sort of vapor barrier between the concrete and the safe.  Else, water will wick up out of the concrete and cause the bottom of the safe to corrode.  Sometimes the easiest thing is to just leave the safe on the shipping pallet to create an air gap to the floor.
  25. I'd guess about half way between an Express and a Wingmaster. I assume it's got the nice bluing of a Wingmaster?
