  1. I am wanting to do Cold Barrel shot testing. How long should I wait in between shots for the barrel to cool off enough to produce another "cold barrel shot?"
  2. High Tower Armory has created this: https://www.hightowerarmory.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=HTAMBS95 And I am tempted, especially with full ambi controls. Having done light research on bull pups, it seems the trigger quality is the greatest weakness. I don't see the HP getting any worse. Saw a review from a left handed shooter, the ejection port is off hand friendly in design. Other reviews are positive, suprised no negative reviews. This tells me it works out of the box if your HP runs. My total investment with this 4th incarnation would be about $650 with all parts and accessories Thoughts? Original Post Want to start out with my bias towards PCCs. What a great idea. Take a handgun round and make it pretty effective 50-100 yards. A buddy sold me a nib 995 in sometime in '08 for $175 with 6 mags. Did as much research as possible and figured if a lemon, HP will fix it. Sat for at least year, maybe two. You see, while I am not a gun snob, it was so hideously offensive to my fine aesthetic style in the original "manlicher style", Planet of the Apes stock, I couldn't even shoot it in private. Couple of notes: Don't dry fire, the firing pin double as the ejector and is a weak part of the system. Check mag lip specs if experiencing feed issues. Trigger is questionable. There are YouTube videos to improve as well as an aftermarket tirgger if you are so inclined. I am not so inclined, though if feeling industrious, I may do a light polish. While www'ing, I discovered the ATI CX4 clone replacement stock for $69.99. Had to have it since I really like the look of the Storm and it eliminates the hideousness. Easy install, iron sights, my buddy is hitting the target at 50 yards. I am good to go, at one point I had mounted a 3x9 on this version. Looks cools, still no function issues. Feels substantial. Notes about the ATI stock: You have to remove 8 screws to remove the receiver from the stock for cleaning and maintenance. It MAY void the warranty; I believe I saw this on the HiPoint Forum many moons ago. The material of the ATI is similar to a semi flexible abs plastic, the original (and current HP stocks) are a more like a plasticky nylon (?) The other difference is how the barrel is supported. The ATI has a single hard plastic clamp vs. full support with a factory stock. Supposedly, the way the barrel is supported, the flexibility of stock itself when the bolt fully recoils coupled with the odd little camel hump to absorb the recoil is how the system was designed. True or not, it the ATI stock, the bolt noticeably hits the rear and after repeated use, the thin rubber recoil buffer pad was pretty beat up. The picture I saw was showing damage to the rails and after the first few fixes, HP figured out it wasn't a design fault. The report came from a guy who shot is 995 a lot, hundreds of rounds per monthly outing For occasional use and an improved recoil buffer pad, you'd probably be safe. I went the supersafe route and upgraded to the $69.99 TS stock with dual mag holders. It was this stock with $40 BSA red dot that pushed it to "protect my wife and life status," after using it in a close range carbine class. Since then, I started my M1 Carbine saga and acquired an AR, so I didn't think I needed a 9mm PDW, so turned it into a plinked with $40 bipod and $69 BSA 1-4 budget optic. Figured I could deer hunt from my home office window since they get within 25 feet of the house. Closing thoughts It's pretty heavy to hump around, but it will get the job done. 10 rounds mags will work if you got a bunch in your pocket. Be sure you seat the mags with the TS stock, they are slightly recessed in the mag well. The spring loaded recoil pad is neat in theory, not necessary with 9mm recoil and causes a for and aft positioning between shots. It's compact, so for longer length of pull folks it may be uncomfortable. Ergo are fair. Newer models have LRHO, I do not. Newer models have have redesigned receiver with clips for easier dis/re assembly. Budget, brand name, well reviewed optics of all sorts should work - low recoil platform. Dropping it and any optic snapping off due to the optic construction or plastic rail - different conversation. With the availability and reported reliability of Red Ball's 20 round mags, I may drop the bipod and scope, remount the BSA (or a $50 Millett red dot) and throw it in the trunk.

    Mount light to suppressor?

I dont see much online pertaining to light mounts for suppressors. What gives? Are suppressors not rigid enough to hold a light and still remain coaxial with the barrel? The assummed problem with mounting a light with a flood lens behind the suppressor is the suppressor will create something like a 135 degree (guesstimating) blind spot (no light) opposite the side on which the light is mounted.
  4. After a loooong wait my wife and I just had our first child (Son) and I am looking to buy a nicer hand-me-down hunting rifle for him/myself. I’m really recoil sensitive so am looking for opinions on what caliber some of your children have used when younger. I’d prefer to get a caliber that will serve him into adulthood and that I will enjoy using in the mean time. .243 was my first choice but would prefer a little more power at distance. .308? .270? Im also looking for suggestions on the rifle itself. Wood stock for sure. Rem 700 CDL or something similar is what I’m thinking. Probably going to try to keep it around or under $1000 for just the rifle.
  5. Classic Firearms is giving away another SCAR 17 this time in sexy all black. Link below or go to their website to enter. https://wn.nr/wxUFU3
  6. Anyone familiar with the Barnes Precision Machine rifles? I aquired a new CQB MOE model in a silent auction, but I cannot find much about them online. They seem to be a smaller mfg. There are a few posts here and there, but not a ton. Does anyone have 1st hand feedback on these? Thanks!
  7. So I’ve been wanting one for no good reason since they came out. Now that they are becoming increasingly available, the prices are at a tolerable level, and early reliability issues seem to have been addressed, I have one. Academy carries them and they were kind enough to send me a 10% off coupon in the mail a couple of weeks ago with actually very few restrictions. It was good for firearms. That made it a very attractive purchase and I could no longer resist. Finally got out to break it in today and I simply love it. Very accurate and 100% reliable. Put about 300 rounds total through it with half of that being Winchester NATO. Oh Shoot even fed it a bunch of that Winchester Forged crap and it ate it like a fat kid does candy. Put a Sig Romeo5 on it about halfway through the fun and it’s a great combo. Just put the dot on what you want to shoot and it’s going to get hit whether you’re using 115 or 124 gr bullets. Very pleased with it. It’s really a lot of fun and would make a dandy defense carbine as well. BTW, Champion BioBird clays are junk. They do not shatter to satisfaction and actually melt in the hot sun, lol.
  8. I'm thinking about purchasing a T/C Compass in .270, as I finally have an opportunity to get into deer hunting. The reviews seem pretty good, especially for a $200 (after rebates at Academy) rifle, but I wanted to see if anyone here had firsthand experience with 'em.
  9. I have this single shot Savage .223 with an aftermarket loading tray that I can literally toss a round in and slam the bolt home without thinking. Can anyone think of a moderate price (sub 700) single shot .22, any vintage, that can be loaded and seated the same way?
  10. I got this in an e-mail today. I have no idea if it's a good deal or not (not really interested in old guns) but thought I'd throw it out here. I've made a couple of purchases from this place and haven't had any problems.
  11. Interesting...... https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/gearscout/2018/10/04/this-ribbon-gun-can-fire-5-rounds-at-nearly-4000-fps-in-one-shot/
  12. Found an old (L serial#) Bushmaster A2 HBAR the other day for cheap and thought, "Oh what the Heck, one more AR won't break the bank." Decided to keep it iron sights since all my other toys have glass and quickly discovered that I could see the target but not the sights OR I could see the sights but not the target depending on which pair of glasses I was wearing (and without them I couldn't see the sights or the target!). Went online and picked up a Primary Arms Micro Dot (2 MOA) and set it up as an Absolute Co-Witness and Voila! I could actually see the target AND the top of the sight post! Setting up at 25 meters for a Battle Sight Zero it put every round through a 3/8" hole, at 100 and 200 yards it easily held 2 MOA. I've never tried the Red Dot/Iron Sight combo before and wasn't sure I would like it but I soon remembered why I liked having a lighter rifle for the simple fun of shooting it! Only problem now is coming up with enough ammo to keep it fed!
  13. Ok, I'm not an AR guy. I own one, but I'm not really into the AR culture and don't know much about all the legalities involved. But I do kinda like the idea of a compact sub gun sized weapon. I've seen several ARs for sale with pistol length barrels equiped with the flat blade type stocks. Is this legal to own without a stamp? Wouldn't that be classed as a SBR? I get the Sig style brace as its designed to fit around your forearm. I also understand that it becomes illegal if you put it to your shoulder. Is that still correct? OTOH: I seen short barreled ARs with the blade type stocks and claims that its legal to put them to you shoulder like a regular rifle. There are lots of videos of people shooting these guns from their shoulder. I'm confused. Somebody please explain all this to me.
  14. Anybody own and or shoot Pistol Caliber Carbines? They are my favorites. I have a Marlin Camp 9 and it is a kick in the butt. Marlin also made one in 45 caliber. It was called the Marlin Camp 45. I wrote to Marlin asking them to bring back the Camp Carbines, but they said no dice.
  15. So I have been told, in no uncertain terms, that I AM NOT in the market for another rifle (Bet you can't guess at who told me that!) ... but ... I found a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm-08 that is just begging me to try to sneak it past her. I've never had a Tikka and don't know anything about them except what I read on the net. The T3 is the older model (not the T3x) but it looks like it has never been shot. I like the 7mm-08 as a deer cartridge but I'm wondering about the Tikka's "true" accuracy (I take most everything I read about accuracy with a grain of salt) and how it will hold up to a hundred or more rounds a month on the range. Any comments, pro or con, will be appreciated (and if you talk me into buying it I promise I won't tell her it was your fault!) Thanks
  16. Looks like Marlin has finally gotten their act together and started making .357 lever actions again. Was at a gun store today and the conversation turned to Marlin .357’s and the guy said that they have in fact started production again after a long hiatus and are shipping now. He also claimed to “know a guy” that works in R&D at Remlin or some such thing and the guy said “they did it right”. This excites me.

    Shotgun Lengths

Question about the Shotguns for sale by rkguns. Is this 14.0" barrel length legal in tn?
  18. A co-worker bought some insert/adapters for a break action shotgun. He's pleased with a 22 insert and asked me about different length 9mm inserts with respect to accuracy. He asked my opinion, but I thought I'd get some other input. Does anyone here have any experience with these? Or thoughts on accuracy? He said the 3" is $40, 5" is $70, and an 8" is $100. In general, I've always read that longer barrels are more accurate, but would there be a big difference in accuracy between the 5" and the 8" for 9mm? I'm assuming he'll be shooting 115 grain, but maybe also 124 or 147 gain. Not sure if that would make a difference. Thanks.
  19. https://www.hightowerarmory.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=HTAMBS95 I've about convinced myself to be the TGO test bed for this HP upgrade. Another $275 into my original $175 investment, why not. In hold'em, I believe the term is pot committed. One of the reviews said the bull pup trigger is average, which has to be an improvement over the well broken and not particularly good stock trigger. Full ambi should be a plus, though curious if they got left handed operator and ejection patterns right.
  20. Bought a JG Anshutz Flobert action single shot Karbine (thats what it says on the barrel) a few weeks ago. Have been trying to find out how old it is. Serial # 510XXX. Stock is beechwood with a schnable flare fore-end , sights are fixed, no provision for elevation. front sight is dovetail on a tapered barrel . Barrel length is about 23 3/4 inches & is inscribed JGAnschutz germaniawaffenwerk A.G.Zella-Mehlis/Thur . Would like to be able to post pics but don't know where to go get shown how to do it in terms I can understand. Desk top computer is too cumbersome & budget prohibits smartphone. Can take images on camera &know how to remove memory card to put images on computer but thats about as far as it goes.
  21. Am new to TN. A neighbor told me not to have buckshot in my vehicle. That would make it hard to go to the range to practice with a shotgun. Is he right?
  22. New record it seems. 3 miles with a .408 Cheyenne Tac http://www.wideopenspaces.com/texas-man-nails-3-mile-shot-to-set-new-distance-record/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=sendible&utm_term=faves&utm_campaign=faves
  23. Picked up an import T-bolt 144 from Robertson Trading Post while on a visit there with a fellow TGOr. It was in the "has to see the doctor rack." I always wanted a T-bolt 144. I walked out the door shedding 300.00 for the 144. Took it home and tossed the poorly fittted 10 rd mag and it didn't look like those sold by Havlins. I took this: https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/39430A and made it into a single shot. It has a spot welded globe front sight, Parker Hale brass aperture holder under the grip. S130 rear sight. Several missing items like all hardware for hand stop, no sling, etc. I ran about 20 patches through the barrel. I slapped some poly on the stock and Birchwood Casey bluing on the barrel and receiver. Just to see what it would do I put some high rings on it to clear the rear sight and put on a cheap Tasco Varmint. Using Fiocchi SV LRN it was boringly accurate off a Caldwell front rest and squeeze rear bag at 25 yrds. So I cranked up the magnification and started to shoot 2" saltines at 185 yrds using Federal Automatch. It got so that I could hit about 1 cracker out of 3 shots, so I smiled and bagged the 144 for another day.

Anyone know where I can find one besides gunbroker? If I find one it is either the 12g or .223 (Why would you ever get a .223 ak)
  25. Got this in a trade with my shooting buddy. He got it as part of a 4 gun trade for one of his custom 1022s. Never seen anything like it and I have had a pile of .22 rifles. Barrel is a Wards Westernfield Mod 46 (Mossberg) "jammed" into a Marlin 81DL receiver. Tube has been cut to accept 5 rds. When you lay your cheek on the stock it aligns perfectly with the V-notch rear sight. This "shocked" me. Obviously the stock is chopped up. The inlay, scrolling and other stock work, cross hatch and finger grooves are the work of a loving somewhat primitive hand. The leather butt stock cover, although much worn, had to be the work of someone who really cared about their work. I used to make custom leather knife sheaths. However, the freestyle obviously hand filed 3/8 scope grooves weren't executed with much precision and the rings don't align when installed Shoots minute of squirrel head at 25 yrds every time you pull the trigger. The perfect fall day woods walker squirrel rifle.
