Bush hog exploded

So I have a pos 5 foot bush hog I was using to cut around a downed tree from the storms. The bush hog experienced a sudden unintentional disassembly. Half of one blade broke in half and exited reality. I was really glad it was the bush hog.  I thought I was having a stroke. Sudden double vision and violent shaking everywhere. 1st thought was I gotta let the kids try this, but on second thought, it probably wouldn't get me father of the year.

So 29 hp kubota. Just cutting grass. Think a 6 foot would run okay or do I need to stick to a 5 foot?

I'm thinking a 6-foot would be too much.  I had a 35 hp with a 4-foot King Cutter and it was great, but in really tough stuff it would start bogging down.  Maybe if you're only cutting grass it would work, but for serious hogging, I'm skeptical.

Or -- here's an idea -- time to buy a bigger tractor.  🙂

Cheers,

It's not the tractor hp but the hp at the pto. The general rule of thumb is 5 PTO hp per foot of rotary cutter. So a 6 footer calls for 30 PTO hp or better. I think a 6 foot would be a little much for anything under a 30 hp @ the pto. I think sticking to a 5 foot would be better on your tractor. Don't forget about the extra weight when moving up in size. A couple of hundred extra pounds hanging on your 3 point.

🤣 i'm glad everything worked out as well as could be expected. Don't mean to laugh at you, but you tell a pretty good little story. I've been on the receiving end of that vethe same come apart. At eighteen years old, it'll make you think twice about living longer.

depending how beat up your bush hog is you could replace the gear box on it

I work in manufacturing and witnessed one of my workers do the same thing, on our small fields, I bought a new 4' BH from TSC for 2k but I could have bought a gear box for 350.

It really bad now. It's been welded ut a few times. I planned on using it for a year and upgrading it. I needed one now kind of thing. That was 8 years ago. I think the gear box is the only thing not damaged. It does need a seal.

I have a Kubota L3250, and it pulls a light 6’ rotary mower fine, but I don’t use it for really heavy work. I wouldn’t think 32 hp would be noticeably different than 29 hp. The weight on the rear of the little tractor would preclude a heavy mower.

Is a L3130D. Technically I think it's 31hp but the pto is 28-29ish

Get a 5 foot and buy a good brand of mower the cheaper ones give a lot of problems if you are going to use long term a better grade mower will serve you better

L3350 claims to be 40hp at the engine and 32 ho at the pto. I’m not sure how much difference that is in the real world from yours. I’d guess you’d be ok mowing grass, but won’t have enough tractor for heavy stuff. I can also tell you you’ll need some counter weights on the front.

I have a bucket on the front. I have loaded it from time to to for ballast. Also run fluid in the tires.

I mow some impressive hills. Like....you need at least 2 beers type of hills. LOL

The game warden told me I have lost my mind mowing the hills. I asked if I could get a DUI mowing my place. He asked why. I told him no reason. LOL.

I also run a 12.3 12 gauge shotgun on the tractor. I shoot so many rats it's ridiculous. There will be 4-5 hawks following me around. I'll shoot a rat and a hawk will hit it 10 feet from the tractor. It's the most redneck thing you've ever seen.

Alleycat I just noticed you are in the Columbia area. Head over to Lynch Equipment down from the hospital. I bought my first bush hog from them in 2014. Traded up in 2022 and they gave me almost what I paid for it in trade. Both were/are Fred Cain Agricutters and have never had a problem with either. Built in KY, parts if necessary and way less than the big name further south. They are not smooth tops, but one piece folded top with reinforcement and have a big gear box. I don't get no commission, just frugal and satisfied customer.

I have a Kubota 3901 with a 5’ Land pride bush hog ,if I had a 6’ I would hit every tree and fence post around.
When I was a teenager I and the other boys in the neighborhood would help a Vietnam vet on his and his  Dads farm . He wasn’t much older than us but his Dad was old and would hit the barn, gate or fence post regularly being the punks we were we would make fun of him. Now every time I hit a fence post etc. I think I deserve this.

I plan on taking to them. I was going to hit the local spot first and Facebook marketplace.

You mow snow

Funny thing, my Wife and kids had been telling me about a bald eagle on the place for months. I was never home to see it. They had pic of it everywhere. Finally put two and two together after I shot a coyote and the eagle was on it. It had been eating the groundhogs and coyotes I was shooting.
