Reloading For Dummies!!

Recommended Posts

Most reloading manuals have a pretty extensive description of the whole process. Modern Reloading by Richard Lee is great at explaining the process in detail, yet easy to follow. It's reloading data, however, could be more extensive. A google search will show several free reloading guides via PDF files.

Also, feel free to ask questions here. Were you closer, I would be happy to have you over and walk through the process with you. I expect there are many youtube videos as well.

You'll be amazed by what you can learn on youtube and by reading these forums, but I'm sure some of the more experienced reloaders will come along with some book suggestions. I started with reloading .38 special and read a lot on here and on other forums in addition to watching youtube videos on specific topics. Seeing is much more helpful than reading sometimes, so youtube videos really helped me.

Guys I appreciate the response. I was talking with my dad the other day about wanting to reload. He has had several friends over the years that have reloaded not only as a hobby but as an obsession. After lurking around on here looking at the setups you guys have got my gears turning. Which according to the wife is at times dangerous. I wil checkout things on youtube and get an idea of what I'd be getting into.

My wife tells me that my running gears will get me in trouble one day.

Earl, start simple, don't get over your head with equipment. Ask us about what you found to load with. I'm sure some will give you the good and the bad points about it.

With that, A 65 year old neighbor that is getting started into reloading. He buys a Lee Load Master with all he needs at a great price, used. I tried to load on my cousin's for 2 years. It's got to be the worst machine on the market. But my friend will spit rounds out all day long with one. I'll stay with my Lee O frame.

Well, I was out of ingots to make my bullets out of. So I started at 8 am and got a fire going and started to melt the last wheel weights I had left. I only had a 5 gallon bucket left full of wheel weights and thought I would get more then this. I got done at 11 am. Guess it's time to go see my tire shop and pickup 2 more 5 gallon buckets of weights. I only have this many bullets left. I figure it will be a month or two before I run out of rounds and will have to go buy more primers and powder, might as well get everything ready now for when the time comes to start reloadin again.

I also made a [url-http://smg.beta.photobucket.com/user/hobbles/media/Reloadin/water-drop.mp4.html]water drop for when I cast em.

Your re-loadin bench is a dangerous place. Keep your fire alarm updated. Here's mine.

I would say now is a good time to be reading and getting an idea of what you want because right now it's getting very hard to find components. Presses and dies are pretty tough too. I started out with a Lee single stage and I've been very happy turning out rounds at a reasonable pace for me.

Mornin Newcomer,

I also have/use the Lee single stage and am happy with it. I just relax, turn on the music and enjoy the process.

I bought a Lee Anniversary kit nearly 20 years ago, with the idea of upgrading once money permitted. So far, the money situation has improved, but I haven't found a need for the upgrade. Just because Lee stuff is cheaper doesn't make it junk.

I'd buy Lee dies, even if all the brands were the same price. I like the way the lock rings work better.

the reference was made several times. if you are loading standard pistol rounds, watch a youtube video, pour in some powder and pull the trigger.  if you want a guide to help you learn more than "how to roll your own" (pulled from introduction), it is well worth the 12 buck amazon download version price.  if you google enough,  you might find a pirate copy on the goobernet. check your  local library  ;-)
