IDPA's new rule book

Recommended Posts

For people who never shot inside a car before it was great learning experience.

For all the complaining we all do, IDPA is unique in the "real life" (sorry kittens) aspects of the stages.

A few comments and observations on the New Finger in the Trigger Guard DQ.

While it is important safety rule news shooters will be the most DQed.  I intentionally watch fast shooters to see what they are doing differently so hopefully I can pick up a few pointers.  I see a lot of the time the more experienced and the faster the shooter is, the less SO is watching for the finger.  To the point that they don’t even notice if someone leaves finger in the guard between transitions. This is especially relevant when the SO doesn’t even keep up with shooter through the course of fire or is the entire time looking at their backside.

I am left hand  shooter and use my fore finger to eject the magazine.  I have been called a couple of time on my finger just because the SO couldn't see it compared to right handed shooter. I believe this is mostly do to it’s on the other side of the firearm.  If it’s not in the guard it’s not on the trigger....  Left handed shooters also make some SO’s nervous because they are not accustom to seeing the pistol on the other side and many times stand on the wrong side of the shooter.  It’s going to very unfortunate if I get a finger call based on where the SO is standing or assumes.      The more I progress the more I am finding out the faster you can shoot on a local level the less they notice things like this where your fingers are and your position of cover.    I also suppose I am also just becoming a better shooter.

IDPA has been so helpful in TN/KY in bringing new shooters to the range without having to worry about the $3000.00 "race" weapons to be competitive.

If that's a thinly veiled jab at USPSA, it's baloney.  You can get fully competitve gear to shoot in Production, Single Stack, or Revolver Division for a grand or less.

No jab intended, you are just reading too much into it.

Like it or not IDPA's rule book states that you can only shoot 1 match before you become a member

I believe USPSA has the same rule. Our local IDPA let the membership requirement slide for years, until they were going to have sanctioned matches.

Safety is #1 !! , but I quit IDPA years ago because of its a game , all the rules and and its no more than a run a gun . I started shooting Polite Society matches. you must think for youself its not a memory game or run and gun , it is much more tactical correct and you do not know were the targets will be and NO WALK THROUGH'S . Range Master in Memphis Tn still shoots matches there. It would be great to start shooting in Cookeville area again.  en.wkipedia.org/wiki/The_Polite_Society

Wish we could get something like that here.

I do not have $3000.00 all to together with my open gun, my limited and the wife's limited gun. but I have seen some idpa shooters that have spent over $2000.00 on there Wilson or les bear. and for those who been around for awhile shooting all over have seen it them also, if they knew it or not.

 ^^ Incorrect.

USPSA allows all legal gun owners to shoot any club match if they can do so safely with equipment consistent our rules.  State/Area/National Championships and similar large sanctioned events are the exceptions.  The only thing we don't do for non-members is send their classifier scores to USPSA, which would be pointless since non-members have no USPSA number to associate with the scores anyway.

Come shoot a match - membership not required.  Our next match in Dickson is Saturday the 15th.  www.NTPS.org

1 extra double pouch and 3 magazines is all  you'd need to go from IDPA to Production.... so that's less that $250 (or there about) is you run 6 mags.

But the fee is collected for those classifiers isn't it? Mo Money! Mo Money!  which is quite alright because they make money for using their Intellectual Property. I still think IDPA should do something like that.

The match fee is not itemized, so you could argue that we collect the classifier fee for non-members.  The accounting and intellectual property issues are, in my opinion, less relevant than the central points I was trying to make:

1) USPSA has no rule requiring membership to shoot club matches.

2) I don't see how USPSA or IDPA can be hurt by non-members shooting matches.

I am not now nor do I anticipate becoming an IDPA member, so I don't really have a dog in this fight.  In my opinion, if we want our sports to grow then a policy of "no second date without a ring" seems counterproductive, petty, and unwelcoming.

Page six of the rules says all competitors must be members. This rule is similar to the one that was previously not enforced at our matches.

1st that is the multi gun rules, a level 1 or 2 match, is not a club match, that's like shooting the music city cup, that would be a level 1 match.

club match is a club match.

"Page six of the rules says all competitors must be members... "

Robert's explanation above is correct. You only quoted the first half of the relevant sentence in the rulebook. The second half reads "... for level 2 matches and above."

Level 2 and above matches are the state, area, and national championship matches that I said are exceptions. Cub matches are generally level 1, where no membership is required. These are multifunction rules, but the handgun rules have the same requirement for level 2 and above.
