Baby snake ID?

Round pupils, so it's not venomous.  Kinda looks like a Northern Water Snake, but it could be something else.

My understanding is that the round pupil rule is only good for Pit Vipers. The coral snake (very venomous) that resides in the U.S. has round pupils. So, all elliptical pupils are venomous, but not all round pupils are non-venomous :)

Technically true, but the coral is identified as poisonous by the color pattern not the eyes. And there's no way that snake could be mistaken for a coral.

Just don't misidentify a king snake as a coral snake, that could be fun.

Fun fact for you. We have 34 different species of snake here in TN. Many of which, I haven't heard of before.

Some of those snakes on the first page look poisonous, the ones with the triangular head.  And this one would be dead no matter what if he decided to do this while I was in my tree stand:

Frankly, I love snakes. I think they are fascinating creatures. Most people who are scared of snakes just haven't spent the time to learn how to identify the ones that are venomous and non-venomous. Just like most creatures, they mean no harm to you, unless you threaten them.

If you know it's not venomous, which is fairly easy to figure out, why kill it? They are like your local pest control around your house.

I'm going to put my educator hat on briefly.   If you want to be precise, pit vipers and coral snakes are venomous, whereas toads are poisonous.  Venomous animals usually inject a toxin into another animal's body.  Poisonous animals introduce a toxin passively, such as by being eaten or touching the skin of the other animal.  Some would consider it pedantic, but it is a difference used by many scientists.  To herpetology-minded folks, venomous vs poisonous is akin to clip vs magazine for gun people.  We know what you are talking about, but we choose to use the more correct terminology.

On a more serious note, think about these 4 things when coming in contact with a snake in TN.

1. Round pupils= ALWAYS
Non-Venomous
2. Long and thin tail= Usually Non-Venomous
3. Round/Non-Triangular shaped head is non-venomous.
4. There are only 4 Native venomous snakes in the state of Tennessee. (Copperhead, Timber Rattlesnake, Western Pigmy, and Cottonmouth).

- You rarely will see a cottonmouth or western pigmy, depending on what part of TN you live in.

- Pupils are easiest indicator :)

Wow, only 4 native non venomous snakes in Tennessee! They must get around a lot.

Just kidding, I am sure you meant 4 species of native non venomous.......

I am a little confused, I think I said 4 Venomous, not 4 Non Venomous. I believe what I originally said was correct, am I missing something? Haha
