2014 Off Season Support Group Deer Season Thread
10-Ring replied to Slappy's topic in Hunting and Fishing
I'm sure some of you are checking your deer online. This is the first year since the online check in that I have taken multiple deer at once. (Unit L) I couldn't figure out if I had to go through the process with each deer or just tag one? -
I enjoyed our post. As a hunter, I feel that we have an obligation to bring new hunters into the fold. I've brought in many but I try to be selective. I like getting kids into hunting. And I don't mind getting adults into hunting as well but I'm picky about who I take. Processing your own deer gives you a sense of accomplishment and a better appreciation for th animal you took. I can't say that if I knew of a really good processer and had lots of money that I would have my deer done, but I don't think it would fel right. To me that would feel like I started a job but didn't finish it. But, I think every hunter should know how to process their own deer. I think if everyone who killed a deer had to proces it themselves we would have a lot less "Fudds" in the woods.

This weekend was the first time I've been able to get out this year. Between work and being 150+ miles from my good hunting spots I've been a little late. Picked up a box of Remmington Scirocco 130g .270 because that was the only box Walmart had when I went shopping Thursday morning and I wasn't in the mood to shop around, more on that later. Hit the woods Saturday morning and had 3 does before 7:30, Sunday I took a new hunter out and let her use my rifle, I didn't even carry one, she got her first 2 deer before 8:00 in the same spot, so it was a very productive weekend. More on ammo, I knew that I was about to the end of my supply of my Winchester Silvertips, which are my favorite bullet so I wanted to pick up some more before I headed out of town. Figured I'd give the Sciroccos a shot since that was my only choice. If you are a trophy hunter by all means this is probably a great bullet for you. My complaint is that it tears up meat bad! On one of the does I took, I took a shot with the deer quartering slightly towards me. I hit just behind the shoulder and the bullet about ruined an entire rear quarter. On another deer the shot was in the same place quartering away and I took out the opposite side shoulder, same on the third. My hunting buddy, using the same gun shot a little high on both of her deer and got them in the spine, ruining all tenderloins and most of the backstrap on both deer. Of the 5 deer 3 flopped and the other 2 ran less than 20 yards. I'm thinking I'm going to stick the remainder of this box in my inventory and pick up some more Silvertips, I'm in it for the meat! The Silvertips or any other round that I have used have not torn up meat nearly this bad, most of the time none is even wasted. I was gifted a Savage .223 bolt action Sunday morning, I'm anxious to get it sighted in and I'm going to try to take a deer with it this season. -
I would have no problem suing somone who hit me while texting. I refuse to do it myself.

I found a huge short cut in my processing this weekend. We ditched the old grinder for a food processor, way, way quicker and you don't have to clean up the meat as much.

The area that I'm hunting has zero, I'll have to hike out drive 15 miles down the road, check it, then go hike it back out. I don't think this will be a solo hunt, pretty sure I couldn't manage that by myself.
-
I was wondering the same. And what happens if you just use the old "I sold that?"

Tuen them in my butt, the residents of NYC need to pick them up and revolt.
-
This is what I'm wondering... Say I'm hunting some rough terrain and kill a good sized deer. To the best of my knowledge it would be legal to check the deer with the app then quarter it out and pack it out. Anyone see any reason this isn't legal?

OCC lost its appeal a good 10 years ago if it had any at all. I wish they would just go away already and quit turning out their underpowered, heavy, poor handling, and uncomfortable junk.

I can't second the shotgun advice enough. No need to get all tactical and get something you don't really need, one of the ones you have lying around may work. A pump action in 20 or 12 gauge with a wooden stock and a 18-20" barrell is perfect. Heavy enough to absorb recoil, but short enough to maneuver around tigt spaces. I like shotguns because of their versatility. You can load with birdshot, buckshot, or slugs. I'll probably get laughed at but I like birdshot for in home defense, it is super deadly at 3-5 yards (come on how for are you really going to be shooting indoors?) Yet at the same time it's not hardly going to penetrate walls and if it does the likelyhood of it having enough energy to seriously harm someone on the other side of the wall is slim.

I did send a cashiers check as opposed to a personal check, it is my understanding that the state holds personal checks. 2+ months seens a little ridiculous though.

I'm missing opening day, I had the opportunity to photograph a wedding on Saturday, it sucks but I have to pay the bills. Hopefully heading west and hunting middle and west TN some this season, also have a plan to go after big bucks on public land here in East TN, so secrets there just a lot of hard work. I'd like to take a deer with my 1911 if I get the chance. -
http://www.trayvonsamendment.com/ I swear, if these people hate guns so much why don't they just move to Illinois where they have strict gun control laws.

Welcome to TGO. Would like to see some pictures of your Webley. If you are not familiar with how to post pictures you need to use a hosting site such as Photobucket.com use the "direct link" after uploading to photobucket. Paste that link into your post under the "image" button, which is just below the happy face icon in the reply box, hope that isn't too complicated.

Mine came yesterday so 16 days, could have been in the mailbox for a couple of days as well. Impressive turn around time for the government.
-
Glad to hear that you are taking it on yourself. The day that I pay someone to do yard chores is the day that I start wearing a skirt and putting cream and sugar in my coffee.

As a photographer that has taken some questionable chances to get a shot, I wouldn't have helped him because his stupidity got him into that mess. I feel bad that the elk had to die because of his stupidity.

I'm not sure which is worse Extreme Cheapskates or Porter Ridge.

I recently rented some equipment from Maryville Rental and they were good to deal with. I've also heard good things about Anderson Rental.

Still trying to figure out why someone would live next to their ex by choice. -
Perhaps too many years in retail left me jaded. True, a persons financial status does not dictate their responsibility with a firearm. Your run of the mill retail employee these days has a body temperature close to 98.6F and breathes, that is about as much function as you get out of most of these people. I can understand why these policies are in place, I will stand by that. I've also had jobs in the past where I carried, though I was forbidden because I felt that it was necessary and my $8 an hour job was not worth my life. Basically I see both sides of the argument. I would have done the same thing your cousin did, I don't blame him one bit.
