In addition to what JWC and the others have said which is correct. Do yourself a favor and read the TWRA hunting manual cover to cover, it is available online at TWRA's website or you can pick up a hard copy for free just about anywhere that sells licenses. I seem to constantly hear that you can or cannot do something hunting related that is completely false information. Hunting laws are not mythological, they are written out in an easy to read and mostly easy to understand format. There are several laws in this state that either don't make sense or are in place for a peculiar reason, and even things that a non hunter or new hunter wouldn't think of but may accidentally violate. Game wardens generally don't have a very good sense of humor and are pretty big on the whole "ignorance of the law is no excuse" thing.

That's the whole point of taking the first shot at 15 yards. There is no need to pull the bolt and the shot will almost always be on paper at that range with the windage and elevation adjustments in the middle. From there complete your steps 4 and 5 and you are good to go.

There is no need to go through that much ammo to sight in a scope. Set the dials on the scope dead in the middle and shoot at a target at around 15 yards. You should be on the paper. Get your windage close then move out to 50 yards and set your elevation. Move out to where you want the rifle zeroed at and make your final adjustments. I've used as little as 2 rounds to sight a new scope in before.

I know people like this as well. We probably all do. I know one guy in particular that OCs a large revolver, carries a CC badge (which I know he has flashed at another driver in a road rage incident in the past week,) has had his HCP revoked by the state previously, and regularly carries while drinking. This is the kind of people that give all of us a bad name. Competent enough to pass all the "background" checks but honestly not stable enough to carry a gun responsibly. I say Constitutional carry as well. There is nothing to stop the buffoons from legally carrying.

I had a good year this year myself, actually the most productive year that I have had in several seasons. That said I had to sit the season out due to a shoulder injury last year, and got skunked the previous year. I'm rapidly losing hunting properties just like it seems everyone else here is. I live in East Tennessee but travel to Middle Tennessee to deer hunt. Being that far away it's hard to make more than a couple of weekends during the gun season. I used to hunt archery and ML years ago and may get back into that this upcoming season. It seems that access to private land, though always difficult, has gone from bad to worse over the past few years. Most of my hunting is done around Wilson and Sumner Counties, which are growing at an alarming rate. I'm seeing the really good places that I was hunting 10 years ago are now subdivisions. I've never been kicked off of a property or asked to not return, everything that I've lost is due to development, or as some would call it, progress. I did come into a really productive new property this year! Another property that I have has deer on it but I can't seem to shoot them. First day I hunted it this year the land owner had watched deer for 2 hours the morning that I got there. I then saw a deer out the kitchen window while exchanging pleasantries, but it was gone before I could get my rifle and get around the back of the house. They actually went from seeing deer daily to not seeing any deer at all since that day. I swear there is a black cloud over me when I hunt that place.

I too have my grandfather's old pipe. Ran across it the other day so I thought that I'd throw a pic up from this thread. I've never smoked a pipe much, just a few times when I was younger. I think I may clean this one up and go buy some pipe tobaccoo and give it a shot.

Anyone who has spent any time in a tow truck or repoing cars will tell you that it is quite exciting at times. That said I can't watch these shows though as they are horribly scripted and poorly acted out. I do like Hardcore Pawn, I think people in Detroit just act that way, I don't think it's really scripted much.

I haven't taken the shot in years as I try to avoid putting anything unnatural in my body. Personally I don't think it's a good idea for otherwise strong and healthy people to take the flu shot every year. I'm not an expert on these things by any means, though I have done quite a bit of studying to determine whether I want my children vaccinated and whether I want to personally be vaccinated for certain things. It seems tragic to hear about children in America dying because of a preventable disease. Because of the severity of the flu this year I have decided to go ahead and get vaccinated this year. A lot of that has to do with my 4 year old daughter who has a compromised immune system. I just can't risk catching it and passing it to her. If it were just me I would probably pass.

I was thinking "An argument for .22 short as a defense round. I have heard it all now!"

I'm the same way with my ENO. I keep it in my car at all times it takes up very little space and I don't have a good place to use it at home. I use it a lot in the woods, IMO it's better than the best ground mat sleeping bag combo. Just curious, is the machete used to break your 5 gallons of ice into more manageable pieces for thawing

I've had luck with Cabela's when they offer it on their website but it is out of stock go ahead and place the order. If and when they get it in, which can be several months later, they will send you an email and ask if you still want it. Thing is they don't charge your card until they fill the order. I scored 1000 rounds or M-22 for $60 back in the summer this way. It took a few months but I had no other prospects at that price.

I've struck up several good conversations with others while looking for ammo at Walmart. Most are good guys, polite, and in the same boat that I am. When I found .40 for the first time after the big shortage there was another guy there looking for .40 as well. There were three boxes and we about had to fight over over who got the third box because both of us were relinquishing it to the other. I wound up taking it and selling it to a female friend for what it cost me.

The nutria look like a lot of fun, reminds me of Whack-a-Mole!

Any chance that you could direct me to this guide?

Good idea on the boost box, I carry jumper cables but I've been stranded before because there was not another vehicle around. I plan to pick one up when funds allow. I too keep a good flashlight in the truck and I do carry rain gear in my backpack.

Been thinking about doing the HAM thing for a while. Initially the plan was for my wife and I to both get licensed so we could communicate. Once she found out that getting a HAM license is harder than getting a carry permit (funny ain't it) she wasn't really interested anymore. I would still like to do it. Good boots are already on my feet, an extra pair of socks and some dry boots won't kill me though.

I would suggest you take a long hard look at anything propane before making that commitment. I have a family member that heats their house with propane and usually pays $400-500 a month to keep the house comfortable in the winter, and by comfortable I mean that 1/2 of the house is blocked off and it's 65 degrees in the warm part. I don't know too much about the heat pump but I think that if you were open to the idea of supplementing a heat pump with a wood burning stove that may be a good option. Again I realize this isn't a good option for everyone. If you don't mind obtaining wood yourself and keeping the fire going it might be your ticket. I always enjoyed heating with wood myself.

I've been without a truck for the past couple of years but I'm finally back in the game. I was wanting to put together some supplies to keep in the truck for different types of emergencies. Going into remote mountain locations on a daily basis makes me a likely candidate to getting stranded or having to take a very long way around due to adverse conditions. (Trees coming down across the road is almost common and it is usually several hours before they are cleared, I've also seen water come over the road and even mudslides cover the road to the extent that it was not safe or even possible to pass.) I don't want to mount a toolbox in the bed of the truck because I don't want to give up the bed space. I'm thinking instead a large Rubbermaid tote that I can put everything in and stick in the back of the cab (quadcab truck) and can easily remove when using the truck for family duties when I need the space. Also it's very common in a lot of the areas where I travel to not have cell service, I really can't imagine many instances where I would use this to save my life or anything, more or less it is intended to enable me to either get home without waiting for the assistance of others or hunker down comfortably until I can get home. So far I've come up with the following... - Large, quality bow saw. I could clear a medium sized blown down tree. Won't have to store a chainsaw in the cab of the truck, doesn't take up a ton of space. - Work gloves - Tow strap. - Two ratchet straps. - bungee cords - 100 feet 550 cord. - Tarp - ENO hammock - Sleeping bag - Charcoal. I always carry charcoal with me. I get the kind with lighter fluid in it already. Great for starting fires, warming up, making a quick cooking fire, I've even successfully used this method several times to dry out firewood and have a decent fire with wet wood. - Bic lighter - Snacks, granola bars, maybe some vienna sausages or potted meat, couple of MREs. - Gallon of water. - jacket - flashlight Again this isn't a bugout kit or doomsday pack or anything like that. Just some things that can either enable me to get home without waiting for hours for some government agency to show up to clear the road or allow me to build a camp, make some food and be comfortable, even in inclimate weather. In addition to what's in the tote I always have a pistol on me and a good knife. The chance that I will need these things is pretty high, though the chance that I am in any actual danger is low, it's about comfort and convenience more than anything. What other items can you guys think of that might make it easier for me to get out of the woods or stay put in them? I don't want to get too elaborate but I'm thinking that a little planning now could make an unexpected night in the sticks enjoyable instead of miserable.

As someone who split a winters worth of wood by hand I can say that this thing is amazing. Looks much quicker than even a really good hydraulic splitter.

If you could get past the blinding and deafening effects of shooting this in a dark room I think it would make a great HD weapon.

If I were in your shoes I would take a hard look at what you are trying to achieve. What is it exactly that you are trying to capture? Are you doing landscapes for your personal use? Family portraits? Maybe some nature shots? For these applications there is nothing wrong with the D3100 at all. Take your money, buy some good glass, and like you said, ignore the auto function and learn to use the camera. I think the only reason that I would upgrade bodies is if 1) I was trying to take pictures professionally (hope you don't mind going hungry) or 2) You are interested in taking a lot of sunrise, sunset (low light) kind of stuff or 3) You are wanting to take action shots. As far as Megapixels go, everybody gets hung up on megapixels, if it shoots above about 8MP you can pretty much do what ever you want with it. I've seen a picture taken with a Canon Mark IIN blown up to 10'x20' and it be clear and sharp as you could ever want it and that camera is only 8.2MP. -
I saw the thread and thought "Dang, another thread about Walmart? These TGOers never learn! They go to Walmart and complain because they stood in line forever, they were treated rudely, and were shocked that the manager sold all of the .22 out the back door to the LGS, what do you people really expect out of Walmart." Okay I feel better now :woohoo:
