Bump

I had to get out a bit today. I was a little disappointed with Bartlett. They always did a much better job of clearing the streets. But there was at least one clear lane on the busier roads. Got a new mayor last year. I wonder if maybe he's not so much of a stickler as the old one was? Crossed over into Memphis for a while. Hell, they didn't even try to clear the streets.

According to the late news, Bartlett officially got 6". Current temp is 8 degrees. Normal temp for today should be 51. Not to get above freezing for the next couple of days. Just to add insult to injury, Thursday's forecast is calling for a wintery mix. Possible freezing rain and ice. Ain't that just dandy.

Here in Bartlett, we've got 4, maybe 5 inches. No, I ain't going out there to measure it. Temperature according to my thermometer is 19. In Memphis, officially, its 13. Staying my old butt in the house. Back when I was still working, the worse the weather got, the more likely I'd have to go out in it. It sure is good to be retired.

How much are you willing to spend? You say you have a Springfield. Excellent guns. That's what I generally recommend. You could go with one of their fancier models. Best bang for the buck? I like Rock Island Armory. Good guns and affordable. Super accurate? Wilson, Ed Brown and Les Bauer come to mind. But they're expensive. Collectable? Can't go wrong with an older Colt. I'm not real fond of their current stuff though.

Start with all the items mentioned above. Safety, law and mind set. Gun shops are bad about selling first timers, especially women, the wrong gun. They sell what needs to be sold instead of what the shooter actually needs. They're especially bad about selling women a small frame .38 revolver which is fine until they fire the first shot. But you never know about people. I had one lady who fired two shots out of a J-frame S&W .38 and declared "Hell NO! " Then another took to the 1911 .45 like a duck to water. Everybody is different. Remember that. I always start new folks with a .22. Revolver first and then move on to semi-autos. Then let them try as many types and sizes of guns as possible. They need to find what fits and works for them. Often that ain't what you or anybody else thinks they need. Remember that too. The general recommendation of starting newbies out with a .38 revolver is usually a good one. Simple is always better.

That thing that FN is currently calling a High Power is NOT a real Hi-Power. Totally different new design that looks sorta like the old Hi-Power trying to cash in on a classic name. From all I hear, its a fine gun. But it ain't a Hi-Power.

I don't do it. Pistols are designed to use the loading round as sort of a buffer to slow down the slide. On an empty chamber, you're slamming steel on steel. However, I've never heard of a gun being damaged by it either. I guess if you did it a lot? I can tell you for absolute fact that dropping a round in the open chamber of a 1911 and releasing the slide on it will damage the extractor. I learned that one the hard way many years ago. As for the wrist flip on a revolver, over time it can affect the crane alignment. Not good.

I've been very happy with mine. Excellent pistol. You might wanna also take a look at the Girsan MCP35. Its a good Hi-Power clone at a good price.

Nope. The 1908 uses a heel type magazine release and is a bit longer. I own both guns and just checked. The Govt. 380 is just slightly too big to fit the mag well of the 1908. Triple K does make aftermarket mags for the 1908. Yeah, I know, Triple K is mostly junk. But I do have a couple for my 1908 and they do work. I'm afraid that's your only option.

Military is limited to FMJ ammo by the rules of war. Which makes sense in a combat zone. Kill an enemy soldier and you take him out of the fight. Wound an enemy soldier and you then need at least one, probably two men to care for and evacuate him. Thereby taking up to three men out of the fight. Civilian ammo is designed to do as much damage as possible with a single round to achieve a one shot stop or a clean kill on a game animal. Lots of people buy surplus military ammo because its generally pretty cheap compared to commercial ammo and many don't know the difference. So they use it for self defense or in some cases, crimes. Once again, the antis have no idea what they're talking about.

You're intentionally putting an abrasive compound into a set of sliding surfaces for the purpose of advancing wear. Odds are that there are only one or two very small tight areas. The lapping compound will affect the entire surface cutting into areas that don't need it. There's a fine line between just right and too much. If the gun functions correctly, just shoot it to break it in.

I'm glad he's gone. But I fear his replacement will be his own hand picked crony and nothing will change.

Any number of the older Marlins. Bolt guns, semi-auto or single shots. All are excellent rifles. Ruger makes several models of the 10/22 with light synthetic stocks. Lots of possibilities, just look around.

I've been getting those e-mails too. But remember, ammo companies aren't above using a good scare to sell stuff. I kinda doubt that there will be any kind of major shortage more than what we are already dealing with. I've got a good supply on hand. Really need to load up some of my less common cartridges like .45 Colt. But I have reloading supplies on hand too. Don't know what I'll do when the primers I have are gone.

My primary carry for about 30 years now has been a lightly modified 1959 Colt Lightweight Commander in .45acp. Comfort and concealment are a product of a good belt and holster. The flat profile of a 1911 makes it a very easy gun to carry and conceal.

I'm an old time 1911 guy and usually go with that. But honestly, I've never cared for a 1911 in 9mm. It just wrong. If you go 1911, do it right in .45acp. Nothing wrong with a CZ. Great guns. I guess it just boils down to the type of action you want. Straight SA or DA/SA.

Nothing new here. I used to work with a lot of illegals. Pretty near all of them admitted to having a gun. But I never knew one dumb enough to try to buy one at a gun shop.
