  1. jcramin... What type of Backpack do you have? I have a Kelty Coyote (4750 cu.) It could be that with some minor alterations you could fit it on your waist belt, hidden slightly by the pack. Or maybe use a "First Aide" looking small pouch that you could attach to the waist belt that has one of those quick zip release opening that would allow you to get to it in a hurry. On my old back (a no name pack) I had areas that overlapped the belt just slightly. It didn't really press against it but was out of sight. I carried a boot knife clipped there. and could get to it in an instant. This weekend, if I can remember I'lldig my pack out and look at it some more. For me, I think it would bug me too much to have something hanging around the front of me like that. But that is just me. My friends are already asking about where to hide guns in and around packs now. So you aren't alone in your quest.
  2. That is a really great link.
  3. No Bayonet?
  4. Thank you all for the suggestions. I am going to get my wife to read over this thread this weekend.
  5. This is rather unfair, but I would say M&P 9mm compact. My wife bought one, and I have been very impressed with it.
  6. Hello Ladies. (I feel strangely awkward like I'm in the women's section of a department store asking for help. ) My wife and and a friend of hers are looking for concealed holsters. Just wondering what is working for you ladies. I understand there are some made specifically for women and have found a few. (And yeah I'm trying to get her to join the forum. She is just busy chasing our kids around, and Christmas isn't helping any.) I'm not going to just pick one out for her, it will be her decision. I just wanted to narrow down the options a little for her. Here are some stats that might help... Height: 5'2" Weight: What do you think? I'm stupid! Weapon: M&P 9mm compact Dress: Normally casual, form fitting shirts but doesn't mind a light jacket, or loose shirt over top. Work: Mainly a stay at home mom, but cleans a couple of houses so she is bending and moving around a lot. Experience: Raised around guns at an early age. What she has said to me: Completely apposed to "purse carry". Is not comfortable with the idea of a "button" she would have to engage to release the weapon. Plastic, or leather she doesn't care as long as it is comfortable. She has already had problems with my holsters pushing the butt into her side while on the range. Thanks!
  7. Seems like more and more people I know are getting laid off.
  8. I backpack when I can, so that is about as close to "survival" camping I get. Longest time out is 4 days , 3 nights. Mostly in the smokies.
  9. One in the chamber, decocked, safety off... Carry Concealed
  10. Careful... you "shovel yourself" in the butt... or at the least the leg. It has no external safety.
  11. That's a really sound suggestion.
  12. On Carry... I think these "fears" you mention, in my mind, only makes you a more responsible gun owner. Many people, I feel, don't spend enough time considering the responsibility and liability that comes with it. I feel that there is more to it than deciding to take an eight hour course and paying the fee. Some serious thought needs to be given. If you are a spiritual person, have you searched the scriptures to show thy self approved? Not what a bunch of guys on a gun board think you should do but are you confidence your actions are approved in the sight of your God. What will you tell your kids as they grow and see you carrying? You don't want them to be afraid to play out in the yard unless dad is there with a gun, yet you want them to understand that a firearm is a tool, and that there are sometimes bad people with bad intentions. Do you have a lawyer that you would call after an incident? Do you have a line of credit to pay for the lawyer should it goto a civil case? When I first got my permit, about 15 years ago I started seeing a lot more questions arise as I thought about it. Legal, moral, ethical, economical, etc. (But then again, sometimes I think too much.) Additional training can never be a bad thing. CIS Training (here on the board) has been a personal goal of mine to attend as soon as I can. But I also feel that smaller courses, even if they are not as in-depth as CIS could still be beneficial. Kids... I have two kids, and was brought up around guns. The policy at the house is no loaded weapons. (Visitors may enter armed, as long as the weapon stays holstered.) Some may not like this rule, some may think it silly... but it's the rule I have. I fear a neighbor kid that hasn't been raised around guns visiting more than my own kids.
  13. I would lean toward #1, but add that the ammo is in a speedloader. Then it would be #3... just my 2 cents...
  14. I saw one at HeroGear a few weeks ago. Not sure of the price.
  15. I like the old way better as well. (just my 2 cents...)
  16. MSNBC LINK (Snippets) The U.S. military expects to have 20,000 uniformed troops inside the United States by 2011 trained to help state and local officials respond to a nuclear terrorist attack or other domestic catastrophe, according to Pentagon officials. There are critics of the change, in the military and among civil liberties groups and libertarians who express concern that the new homeland emphasis threatens to strain the military and possibly undermine the Posse Comitatus Act, a 130-year-old federal law restricting the military's role in domestic law enforcement. Domestic emergency deployment may be "just the first example of a series of expansions in presidential and military authority," or even an increase in domestic surveillance, said Anna Christensen of the ACLU's National Security Project. And Cato Vice President Gene Healy warned of "a creeping militarization" of homeland security."There's a notion that whenever there's an important problem, that the thing to do is to call in the boys in green," Healy said, "and that's at odds with our long-standing tradition of being wary of the use of standing armies to keep the peace." ====================== Does this kind of creep anyone else out? I can see some of the logistical benefits I guess, in regards to Massive Chemical, or Biological attacks... having ober trained reaction forces does make some sense, but it stills gives me the creeps. Maybe it is the idea of using active army, and not a Federal Department type for it. Not there would be much difference I guess. (Need to read the whole article to put it in the proper perspective.)
  17. I would like to see some legislation in the form of a "good samartian" type law that would protect Business owners in the event a Permit holder used his weapon on his premises. One that limited any liability from the business owner. Hopefully that would help keep a lot of businesses from getting posted, and the ones that did couldn't use the "liability" issue as an excuse to mask anti-gun intentions.
  18. Are polymer mags better than the aluminum, or steel? Or is it just personal preference. How does the three rate?
  19. This is too funny! My wife was out shopping today (Black Friday ya' know). So she went by "Dick's" in Franklin thinking she would get me two boxes of .357 sig cause of the sale and all. (Plus cause shes great like that.) The guy behind the counter said they don't carry it because... "We don't carry any Homeland Security ammo." Here's the exchange. Wife - "Uh, excuse me?" Guy - "That is a homeland Security round 'mam. They won't let us carry any Homeland Security ammunition." Wife - "Do you carry .357 magnum?" Guy - "Oh yes mam." Wife - "Have you ever seen the damage a .357 magnum can do?" Guy - "Uh yes." Wife - "So what's the difference? You carry Shotgun slugs too don't you?" Guy - (Now smiling.) "I know mam... I know... this isn't me. It's just why they tell us we don't carry it." She goes to Academy Sports then. Wife - "Do you have .357 sig?" Guy - "Do you mean .357 magnum?" Wife - "No, .357 sig." Guy - (Hands her the box, and opens it showing her a round.) "Is this what you want?" Wife - "Yup. That's it." Guy - "It won't fit a revolver." Wife - "It's okay... I know what I'm getting thanks." Guy "So you shoot a .357 sig?" Wife - "Sure." Guy - "How do you like the way it handles?" Wife - "The kick is a tad more than I like, but it's shoots great and I can hit with easily." So it appears (according to "Dick's" Corporate policy or maybe just that store) the .357 sig round is sooo dangerous that only the most elite of Homeland Security Operators can be allowed to shoot it. BWAHahaha!!! Or maybe it's to protect all the women from it's suductive powers that are inhearent in the round? Also on a side note... The guy at Academy was just trying to be helpful, I'm sure he was just trying to make sure my wife knew what she was getting. However as my wife pointed out to me... "How many women come into a store specfically asking for .357 sig anyways? you'd think he would know I knew what I wanted." She really hates the way women are kind of talked down to at gun stores. I wonder if anyother women get second guessed at stores like that.
  20. In one easy to print list! LOL!!! ____ Heat ____ Man on Fire ____ The Professional ____ Uncommon Valor ____ Underworld (Underworld II) ____ Tears of the Sun ____ Open Range ____ Resident Evil (all of them) ____ Tombstone ____ Starship Troopers ____ Blackhawk Down ____ Reservoir Dogs ____ Dog Soldiers ____ Full Metal Jacket ____ Soldier (with Kurt Russel) ____ Dawn of the Dead (2004) ____ Munich
  21. Thanks Joe... guess I was struggling to give the dealer the benefit of the doubt.
  22. Is it just me or does those Lowers look huge? I'm comparing them to the barrel to the left. That and the FAL receiver at the top. It just seems like they are really big. Bigger than a .308 receiver. Could they be a weird .50 cal receiver? (That might explain the price maybe.)
  23. Great thread. For me, besides what you have mentioned... what stands out most right now is my family's health. Particularly my oldest son's health. He got diagnosed with TYPE I Diabetes Oct 1st and spent 3 days in ICU. So I'm thankful for the doctors, Vandy Children's hospital, the Juvenile Diabetes Clinic at Vandy (Which ROCKS!), and those other TYPE I parents who found out about us and though didn't even know us, found ways to contact us and let us know we weren't alone in this. My son when asked at a Junior youth group devo what he was thankful for, he paused and said... "Insulin... and my family, but mostly Insulin right now." And then smiled at me. We've had a rough year... but we're together, we're reasonably healthy, and looking at life differently after all this. Have a Great Thanksgiving guys.
  24. We'll remember you and your wife in our prayers.
  25. Awesome!! Great use of a stamp!!
