  1. During a run to raise money for the Pat Tillman Foundation, a 95 year old WWII vet came out in full uniform to cheer on the folks running past his house.  You can guess what happened next...   :usa:     http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/good-sports/201403/408k-race-san-jose-world-war-ii-veteran-salute-pat-tillman
  2. This wasn't a college, it was a high school. Knives of any sort are banned. If you have any knife at a school, you have intent to go armed (which has never really been defined).
  3. What they said.  If it's not obviously corroded, I'd just shoot it.
  4. If you have one piece of heated gear, get a vest. I'd have to agree on the hard tail idea... Sounds like a quick way to make a good back go bad.
  5. I know I flew back and forth to Detroit several times before TSA in Detroit finally found a big, cheap Swiss Army knife copy I'd left in my bag. It had to have been there for at least 5 or 6 trips before they found it. It had been there for years and I'd completely forgotten about it. I put a cheapo in there on purpose so I wouldn't care if it got lost or stolen.
  6.     Could be that the spring is supposed to be that way.   Fully compressing the spring causes the metal to yield slightly.  Repeating that a few times causes the metal to work harden and "take a set", so it is different from when it was new.  A thoughtful designer would know that's what's going to happen and compensate for it in other ways.   I had an application in a previous life where this was exactly the case.  The act of installing the spring in it's assembly over stressed the spring and caused it to yield.          Keeping a little oil on a steel spring is always a good idea simply because it helps prevent corrosion.  It only takes a little corrosion pit to start a crack and kill a spring in short order.  Spray your garage door springs with WD-40 once or twice per year and they'll last longer.
  7. I am an engineer and have designed a few springs.... A properly designed spring will not weaken by being left compressed. And by "properly designed" I mean designed such that the stress in the spring when compressed to the max in its application is low enough that the material doesn't fatigue significantly over time/cycles. Sometimes it's not physically possible to do that. The requirements of packaging, rate, etc. may be such that you simply can't get there and the spring will eventually fail in one way or another. And while a spring may be designed for "infinite" life, sometimes they don't get made correctly. The temper may be off a bit or it may have some corrosion or something like that. When people disassemble anything with a spring in it, they tend to like mashing the spring completely flat into "coil bind". That's generally a really bad idea. If the spring doesn't go into coil bind in its application, it's likely you're over stressing it by doing that and causing permanent damage to the spring. The same thing goes with extension or torsion spring. Stretch or twist them too far and you'll ruin them.
  8. My motorcycle needs one of those stickers.
  9. Bummer... http://www.local8now.com/news/headlines/Comedian-Tim-Wilson-dead-at-52-247566831.html?device=phone http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zy0LCHJC_k
  10. I did the opposite and rode street (sport) bikes for 15 yrs before getting a dirt bike. It's been quite the adjustment as (nearly) everything is backwards now. But I can certainly see the benefits of riding in the dirt.
  11. Unless you just want to shorten it, counter boring it is a lot easier.
  12. Both mobile and full site working fine on my eyefone. I installed the update the other day.
  13. Among the many reasons why I wear a full face helmet...
  14. Stupid hurts. Sometimes it kills. Darwin at work.
  15.       And there it is.  By the time a large number of parents start thinking about teaching their kids about such things, it's way too late.  By the time the kid is 16-18 yrs old, you're pretty much done as a parent.  Personality traits, spending/saving habits, work ethic... it's all pretty well set by then.  If you haven't spent the prior 10 yrs teaching them those lessons and concepts, they're going to spend the next 10 yrs learning them the hard way.

It's all about shot placement. If you can't shoot it accurately and relatively quickly, it's not a good defensive choice regardless of what caliber it is. A hit with a .22 is more effective than a miss with a .50 BMG.
  17. ... And I agree completely. However, I'm quite sure the Dad knew about the policy. Let your kid borrow your car? Make darn sure there's nothing in it that might get him in trouble. It's certainly not the boy's fault. If there's any blame to be assigned, it's with Dad. Stupid rule or not. And yes, I too carried a pocket knife all through school. Teachers would occasionally ask to borrow it because they knew it was sharp.
  18. What a schmuck. That's hunting out of season at the least.
  19.     Ok, so who else had to google "intransigence"?     But seriously... yes that's stupid.  Dad should do a better job cleaning out the car.
  20. Ok, so it sounds like some form of local storage with cloud back-up is the way to go.  I have no interest in full time video.  I'd be satisfied with game-cam type motion activated still images.  As I said above, seems like quality still images would be better than a crappy video and probably a lot less data to store/upload.
  21.     True.  I'd be happy with simple photos every second or two rather than streaming video.  Seems like a few reasonably high quality photos would be as effective as video.  Not as much fun to watch, but it would serve the purpose.
  22. Mine is also a little wild with some hairs that stick out in random directions.  My wife gave me a bottle of some stuff that she tried for frizzy hair.  It's some sort of oil but I don't remember exactly what.  I know it's not jojoba oil.  Either way, it doesn't seem to do a whole lot other than make it a little shiny and give it a slight smell of snickerdoodle cookies (which isn't a bad thing....   :dirty:   ).  I sent her the link that Spots posted above in the hopes that she might get me some of the oil for VD.  Seems she takes hints about as well as I do.  I've looked in several stores and haven't found anything, so it seems ordering online is the only to get it.
  23.     The fear mongering rhetoric and blindly passing judgement based on it is a pet peeve.  Forgive the barb, it wasn't directed specifically at you.           I wouldn't say "all", but I see your point and agree with it.  Most of those hybrid owners probably have a 2-stroke leaf blower.
  24.     The whole point of cloud storage is there's not any recording equipment to find (or buy, manage, and maintain).
  25. There's a mental image I really didn't need....
