reloading. 308. thoughts and questions from a newbie.
Jonnin replied to vujade's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
you may need to eventually trim the cases (?). The rest of your procedure looks great and the results also look great. -
I think it sums up the problem nicely when you say that you cannot get out of it what you want so you just keep it. I have had a few like that. Its not even love-hate, its just better to keep a working gun than to let it go for peanuts.

By the time I left highschool my eyes were pretty bad --- I could see the E with one eye, and not the other, on the eye chart. I had that corrected to 20-20 in my early 30s with laser surgery, but I am starting to get nearsighted again and cannot be corrected any farther so now I have glasses. Sigh. I correct for it by mostly using scopes and red dots on my guns for the ones that I want to shoot accurately. The glasses help but they cannot do it all and iron sights just do not work out for me like they did with contacts when I was younger. And, thanks to the surgery, contacts are "frowned upon" --- there is risk to using them now so I did not. For any number of reasons, I recommend that older folks do not shoot high recoil guns frequently, and download them to a gentle recoil or treat them as a "few times a year" treat. That is just an opinion from someone who failed biology, though, so do what you will

ATF consider banning "military" style shotguns
Jonnin replied to jcoosi's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
The military and police tend to use pump action "riot" style guns, not semi-autos, for shotguns, from what little I have seen of actual usage of shotguns (not terribly common for military, common enough for police). Unless I missed something?? -
Its a nice looking pistol. Might google a comparison between it and the desert eagle in 357? This one looks closer to the 1911 but both are 1911-ish.

College Student drunk, wanders into wrong house
Jonnin replied to chances R's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
"It is also unfortunate that we see a lot of incidents in Boulder where people become so intoxicated that they illegally trespass into another's residence" She keeps doing that, she is going to make someone's day for sure. Or night. -
There are inexpensive 1911s that work great at the range and are reliable and good for self defense. Someone probably already said rock island. The ruger 1911 is not terribly high priced either. However if you are willing to break away from the tradational 1911, you can find some with higher capacity (para, for example), smaller sizes, and so on that are better to haul around. The tradational 1911 with 8 shots & massive frame is not the only choice. The 1911 trigger and mild recoil are awesome. The weight and size, for carry, are managable but way, way to big for me (and many others say the same). 9mm will stop (or kill) a person. That is really what it was designed for. A 9mm +P (defense ammo, hot loads) is close to a 357 in a short barreled revolver, and the 357 and 9mm have both been considered to be excellent defense calibers for a long time. The 45 may be slight better --- it does make a bigger hole --- but the gun is going to be bigger and hold fewer rounds. So, basically, you need to look at the tradeoffs between gun size/weight, recoil, capacity, and caliber. You also should understand the huge difference between the feel of a 1911 trigger and the XD trigger, if that matters to you. If you like the XD/ XDM, those are fine guns. There are other choices, by the way. The 357 sig is hotter than 9mm, and the .40 is both bigger around and more powerful than the 9mm as well. You can still stuff quite a few rounds into a carry gun (13/15 compared to 9mm in typical guns). These will have more recoil than either a 9mm or a .45 but you asked for big. The 10mm is uncommon and you are limited in gun choices but they are closer to a 44 mag and are extremely powerful rounds (its a 40 diameter but much much more powerful). These cost more per box of ammo, esp 10mm.

low 40s & nightmare hunter & mage. low 20s HC hunter & mage. Those are the 2 I think I want to play mostly.

IIRC the sackets are not westerns until much, much deeper in the series. I think it starts with the father of the clan in england, he comes to the new world, has kids (this is several books worth...) then, eventally, a couple of the kids or grandkids make it out west and become "true" westerns. So If you want a "western" you might skip to the middle or even end of the series. Just a heads up.

IIRC the mini-ball for muskets was hollow based so it would flare out to fit in a variety of not quite to spec guns, and proved to be very accurate and was the best design of the time. That was used in the civil war.

powder type. Use the super fast/hot stuff and less of it (pressure up from deep seating) and there would still be air space in it.

New to Tennessee, what do I need to know?
Jonnin replied to williamsburg's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
the class in part is about where you can and cannot carry. Until then, google something like "tn handgun laws visitors" to get the 10 cent list of what you can and cannot do. The class also has some gun safety & basics, and a very easy shooting exercise (hit a man-target most of the time at a few ranges from short, shorter, and shortest). TN gun laws are state wide only, one of the laws is that local areas cannot create local gun laws. So your county is the same as any other. You do not really transfer. You apply and obtain a TN HCP. For some time (30? 90? something?) days your old permit will still work but after that, you need a TN one. http://www.tn.gov/safety/handgun/handgunfaqs.shtml#q7 might be a good starting point for where to not carry. -
I am all about getting away if possible. Sometimes, though, getting away means shooting everyone first to clear the path. It should be 100% up to the victim how to play the situation, not mandated by law. The guy writing a law cannot write one that makes any sense in all situations --- it is a pointless effort. Every situation is unique and the only person qualified to make decisions is the victim.

Negative. All objects drop at exactly the same rate. Now, air resistance falling can come into play (a feather, for example, will not hit the ground at the same time as a bullet if you drop both) ---- but if you took away the air, and dropped them on the moon, they would both fall the same! if you shot the rifle at exactly 90 degrees (exactly parallel to the ground in a perfectly flat area) and dropped a bullet from the muzzle height at the same time, they would hit the ground at the same time (assuming there is no outside factor to raise the bullet from the rifle). That is why velocity is king. You have however many seconds... if you fire from a bench rest parallel to the earth, you are what, 4 feet off the ground? The bullet has 4 = 1/2 32T^2 solved for t (time) = 1/2 a second. If the bullet is booking it at 3k FPS, then, it hits the ground in 1500 feet assuming no loss of velocty (and there will be some). Of course, no one shoots parallel to the ground, you shoot up a little, and zero the scope to account for that, etc. Angled up just 5 degrees gives you a lot more hangtime due to that large initial velocity upwards. 5 degrees up at 3000 fps is 261 fps upwards, in this example, which is significant!

Im in! Got a trial copy friday night, and then of course the one I bought showed up sat (if I had not had the trial it would have arrived wd this week lol). I like it so far. They noobed it a bit with the level to unlock skills (no more trees, no more customized builds). I just got to act III with my best character. Level 27 I think. I have tried the witch doctor (hard to get a feel for --- like the necro, you have to really understand the game to succeed with this class I think), the demon hunter (excellent -- high damage comes easy and that smoke screen ability lets you escape pounding by the horrible elite packs) and the wizard (my favorite so far, "monsters all around me I be lighting them all up!" ) (google the "roll a d6" song if you missed that one). You gun nut types need to try out a demon hunter..... the animations alone are worth playing one once to level 10 or something. I will figure out my tag and put it in here. edit -- oh, you can do it by email? jonnin at-symbol comcast.net But in the long run, I plan to play hardcore mode, once I understand the game and new dangers well enough. I have 2 unclaimed guest passes if anyone wants to do a trial run. Most important tip: options -> elective mode. Put any skill in any slot. Win.

the eaa witness and my cz are the same --- and it is the real reason we swapped to 380 bullets. The smaller bullets can be tailored to fit into the cz better, while the regular 9mm bullets have to be a specific type seated to a specific depth, you have no room to work on the load. You *can* use a longer bullet in them but it has to be a steeply cone shaped one. The guns eat most factory but not all, a few do not work. Its rare, mostly very fat JHPs on the heavy end.

Probably not, now that you mention it. I used to shoot pennies out of a slingshot, it was cool but they went every which way but straight (that was part of the fun).

yea price per round is the issue. Duhhh lets load up a 12 gauge with 8 quarters for shot.... now, the end of the world as we know it when quarters are worthless, that might be an idea.....

Glocks have acceptable accuracy bordering on pretty good. I would guess you have a bad barrel (dinged crown, possibly?) or some *very* bad ammo. In general, even very bad ammo just has a wide variation in the up/down due to inconsistent powder charges. If it cycles the action in a glock, its strong enough to stabalize so it should still be dead on left/right. So to miss left/right the bullet would have to have a serious blemish to cause aerodynamic veering --- highly unlikely. All that translates to one of 2 things: 1) your barrel is messed up OR 2) the shooter is messed up.
-
How hot the loads are has no effect. Pressure is changed by modification of the distance between the back of the bullet and the primer. If that distance is decreased (seated deeper), pressure rises (and in a straight walled case, it rises FAST). That is all there is to it. When making ammo, your seat depth should be the same (virtually, with a margin of error of course) for every round -- and there WILL be minor variation in case length unless you trimmed the brass first and discarded the ones too short to trim.

Who has the right to ask you if you are carrying?
Jonnin replied to sschrick's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
For sure, law enforcement. Also, property owner or representative of the property owner if you are on someone else's property (store, etc). Random citizens can ask, but you are not required to answer. Anyone can ask, of course. Rental cops represent whoever hired them, as do any employee of a business and if you are AT the business where the questioner works, they may ask. I am not sure you have to show a permit to any but the law enforcement. Others who ask cannot ask for that -- it is your private info (name, etc). They can ask you to leave, but they cannot ID you or detain you. -
That is where I went too. I use the leopould mark AR, 3-9 power and did not fool with an offset red dot --- I can do what I need to with it.

There comes a point where more speed is not helpful. I think the era of speed = king is over, and now they seek innovation in other areas. This is good. There is a lot of military R&D in this country, in every area you can imagine. Not sure what manned craft is flying, but you can bet there are new things being done, even if they are incremental upgrades to the older designs.

I agree with you. But GZ is not charged with manslaughter, he is charged with murder 2. I think getting out of his car and getting near the suspect was dumb on many levels. I would be a lot more neutral if the charges WERE manslaughter. I do not think GZ is an angel nor can I defend his actions (because they make no logical sense). But I do have an axe to grind with the president, media, race baiters, and more with their BS, from the kid picture of TM to forcing GZ into hiding with death threats. GZ's life has already been examined in the press and dragged thru the mud. Its TM's turn now.
