Army chief '99.9 percent' confident no one was harmed by anthrax
Jonnin replied to crossfire's topic in General Chat
the public will buy it that computers actually can make mistakes. Apart from the famous floating point glitch that affected like 1 operation in a billion 20 years ago on the first Pentium, that has not been the case --- all computers do exactly what they were told to do; one of the first things they tell you in computer science is that computers are totally obedient morons that literally do exactly what is commanded without variation. Still, the public will accept that the computer is somehow to blame, not the idiot that bungled writing the software or the user that typed in the wrong value. The bigger question that comes to mind is WHY IN THE BLUE FXXX DOES THE MILITARY HAVE LIVE ANTRHAX AT ALL? -
That is awesome, thanks for sharing!

Lol so much for the variety suggestion. I suppose going with what you like works too :P

My mom has one. There is nothing wrong with them, its not well suited for going 80+ on the interstate but to putter around town at 70 or whatever MPG... yea, it works. She has her HCP too :) And even she isn't old enough to be a hippy. Goodness, picking on what, 75 year olds? Or you mean younger liberals (they are not hippies, really, just idiots ... all dressed up and nothing worthwhile to protest about). Great answer though ... I would have said "its like refusing to be vaccinated: the idiots who don't get one are safe so long as someone has the means to defend against problems. I protect you so you can run around feeling safe... with people like me out there, the bad people think twice about attacking anyone "

Yes. Someone who steals a firearm *and sells it* should be convicted of some form of "aiding and abetting" other criminals. Don't matter who bought it, IMHO selling a stolen gun is implied to be on the black market and at that point all buyers are potentially felons. If the steal it and do not sell it, they should be convicted instead of some form of "going armed" or "intent to do harm" type laws. When someone steals a gun they are, absolutely, either selling it which enables other criminals or using it to commit worse crimes. There is no room for a gentle hand here ...

its your money of course but the SP and GP are about the same exact thing. I would suggest getting a totally different second gun instead --- the sp is scaled down slightly to have 5 instead of 6 shots and a slightly smaller frame. I would say get the GP if its for fun, the SP to carry, one of the two, and then something else radically different. The GP is the nicest revolver to work on I have ever touched. We put a light trigger spring in ours and now it has like a 3 pound DA pull, which even I can manage comfortably. I expected the usual wrestling match takedown and assembly against a bunch of aggravating springs, but it was simple and sweet inside.

usually its an issue with really old guns, or heavily worn guns, where the worn out parts do not quite do the job anymore. For example I have a bad one that the "pusher thingy" what is attached to the trigger and the cylinder notches are so badly worn out they only turn the cylinder about 95% of the way. The cylinder stop is also worn so it does not really lock into place either. Bottom line is the thing is dangerous to shoot, it will shave bullets and spit the shavings out the side of the gun, or worse. It was my great grandfathers and its just not to be shot anymore. One thing to check is the cylinder lockup. If it can be turned by hand, that is bad, even a little wiggle is not great, it should not move at all when it is in fire position. This is not quite the same issue but its related. Another issue is if the cylinder rotates when it should not, not talking wiggle but for example, some revolvers allow you to rotate the cylinder freely under some conditions, but most DA/SA do NOT. The gp and sp should NOT rotate freely with the hammer down, for example. What most folks do is dry check each chamber ... that would mean cock it 6 times and try to wiggle the cylinder each go, and make sure it is aligned (look down the barrel or use a caliber-sized rod ) each go. The only other source of the issue that I know of are 1) manufacturing defects: fixed by sending to manufacturer. 2) some idiot changed the cylinder out for one that does not quite work. Fixed by undoing this. Example, putting a 7 shot cylinder into a 6 shot gun of similar models that seems to fit but don't. I would think this would be a non-issue on a gun like a GP/SP unless its been abused badly or shot to death, both should be obvious. Do you have a reason to suspect a problem? If you discover a problem, ruger should fix it, might cost you though. The only way to fix a worn out one is a new cylinder and pusher, which don't exist for most of the guns that are so old they have the issue..

Reloader question. Cheap source for lead.
Jonnin replied to TN Volunteer's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
maybe try a boating area -- a lot of ballast was lead, might find an old boat weight. Old plumbing can still be found as well, the boot or whatever they called it would net you 20+ pounds at one go. I would look for a big score like that, something old that you can get all at one big chunk. Tire weights are about pointless now... you get like 1 weight per 20+ unusable ones. maybe try something like http://www.nuclead.com/leadballast.html if you can't find a free/cheap local scrap pile. -
I tossed them when they decided to be anti-gun. Never again for comcast.

***UPDATE*** Well, someone broke into my car.

Good! Did you get the other stuff back too? -

It works too lol. I had to go before a judge as a teen (for a rather serious driving error) and the suit & fine young gentleman act got me off with a stern "pay attention" instead of taking all my money. I dunno what it is about ppl and suits. I hate suits. I am not impressed by anyone because of their suit. Some of the smartest and most competent people I know look like hobos most of the time. -
it should be OK to fill the tank with gas, dilute the oil, and just burn it out... unless its a very sophisticated engine in there (?). Common sense is sort of something you are born with but it CAN be taught. Just go over all the stuff calmly with him, explaining the WHY and HOW behind it all and tie that in with a "try to be observant" ... at the least he should have seen the scalped effect and known that was not right.
-
yea there is no doubt it can be done. But under pressure of an audience, and not having practiced it, and all the rest --- either the guy is slick & just pool-sharked a bunch of people out of their money by downplaying his ability or he has no chance ...

How many here trust their life to your own reloads
Jonnin replied to Ron Padilla's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I load my own and trust it more than factory. I just made 50 & shot up what I had in my guns. The stuff in my guns was several years old, been carried daily, often been taken out of the mags and put back in, often been racked in and out ... every round of it fired and cycled. That box of 50 cost me less than half of what a box of 20 "defense rounds" cost in the store. I can make them all day to practice with if I wanted, though I have a duplicate load with cheaper projectiles for that. It does not get any better than being able to practice with virtually exact duplicates of your carry load. -
Ive looked high and low for a large, comfortable grip for bisley model Blackhawk but without much luck.

Cleveland hunting rifle pistol club is decent. Its outdoor and inexpensive (150?) for a year, with indoor restrooms and a clubhouse. Youll need nra membership, 2 sponsors, and be willing to work once or twice a year on the grounds (stuff like painting or putting up target boards or picking up litter/stick) ... max range 200 yd. Its due every new years roughly, so buying in after mid year is a meh idea. I a member atm but haven't been in a while, its a drive and been busy lately... -
find an outdoor range that don't care if you use a pistol on the rifle area. Most don't care. I could do it with a better cartridge in a good gun, but 9mm has a lot of drop and most semi-autos have crap for sights. I'd take the bet with a handloaded 44 and a month to prepare for the challenge...

What kind of gun does a pirate use? An "ARrrr"

after being stuck watching CNN about it for 1/2 an hour over lunch today, watching them blather on about this incident, what crossed my mind is that "if only they had arrested perps and investigated fully the last murder/shooting rampage near waco".
-
I see that now. My fault for reading the exec summary page instead of a full article!

Got a new custom self defense blade today
Jonnin replied to Spots's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
Its very pretty! It looks like it might actually be possible to throw it properly (?). I prefer a guard or finger hole or something to avoid slips if I am going to fight with a knife. That indentation might be enough, it looks deep enough to keep a firm grip. -
It would be interesting to know how many of them had legal firearms (had whatever paperwork, not a felon). When 200 people are arrested and only 9 got shot, either the incident is grossly misreported or they were the worst shots to ever pick up a handgun. 5 year old kids hit their parents with 100% accuracy, but a 'gang' of hardened thugs (going by the news angle here) in a gigantic brawl with fewer hits than a typical school shooting??? Or was it 5 or so armed thugs in a crowd of 200+ mostly decent folks? We probably wont get any answers to those questions, but 9 people shot was way too few for the size of the 'riot' if it were truly a pair of 'violent gangs' going at it. I would have said 30+ victims would be in order at least.

That is not the issue at all. I don't think ANY serious 2nd amend supporter type person is going to ask for free guns and ammo. Most are totally against govt handouts. However (is it switzerland and isreal?) some countries provide each home with a gun and ammo for defense and common good of the state. I could be down with THAT as a GOOD USE of our taxes and a good way to dispose of worn, but not worn out, military surplus. The issue is about the government and its ability to tax a thing out of the reach of the people. The goverment could sign in a tax on ammo of $100/ per primer sold (whether encased in brass or loose). That would make shooting anything other than a flintlock just about impossible for most people. All it takes is a supermajority of gun control retards to do it. Or they could use the EPA to ban the use of lead, forcing expensive substitutes. Or they could declare smokeless powder to be a dangerous explosive not to be sold to the public because it was used in a bomb once. Two of these have actually been attempted, in the pre-bill stages at least, in congress. The powder one was going to limit the amount that could be stored in one place to a very low amount, effectively making it impossible to ship or sell from reloading stores/etc. And the EPA one was also attempted at least twice as best I can remember. The third one, tax on bullets, is IN PLACE but the tax is not high enough to eliminate shooting YET. All I am saying is that the enumerated freedoms of the constitution should be 100% tax free at both state and national levels. That means sales taxes, vice taxes, BAFTE fees, background check fees ... all of it needs to go away. I don't care if it pays for some "service" ... there is no gun-related service that I require from the government. It needs to go away. Ill pay my fair share of taxes on everything else same as always. But taxing a right opens a door to tax the right OUT OF EXISTENCE. That is BAD.
