AR optics

Recommended Posts

What is a good scope for an AR? I am looking at picking up either a 24" bushmaster or a 16" M4. I am going to be shooting around 100-200 yards at the longest. I have a red dot for within 25 yards. I am getting it mostly to shoot on the range and also to take care of a few coyotes. Any suggestions? I am new to rifles and optics so I don't know much about brands or power. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on my first scope, but I want a quality scope.

Here is how I set up my 24" varminter and 16" M4 --

Burris XTR on a GG&G mount and Eotech. I've been well pleased. With optics you get what you pay for as a rule. I am not amused by people that spend $900 on a rifle and then toss a $200 optic on it and wonder why it's not accurate. Buy the $200 rifle and toss a $900 scope on it and you are way ahead. That being said, the Burris line of scopes for many years has been shadowed by Leupold, but no longer. I believe the Burris line is above Leupold in quality and still retains the price advantage.

Good advice. I heartily agree. Have used everything from Unertl (the best..but outdated), Redfield (target scopes -- ok; but gone), Leupold (16X target-- ), and burris. Burris is the best for the money.

Hope this helps.

PS-- I LIKE THE IOR STUFF AND THE TRIJICON HUNTING STUFF TOO. BURRIS IS STILL THE BEST DEAL; ALL THINGS CONSIDERED -- I BELIEVE.

Don't want to highjack another man's thread but i had the same question. I have an AR15 w/16" barrel. Will use it for target and occasional coyote. First instinct was to trade for a 24" bull barrel rifle. Thought it might be better to put some optics on the AR and see waht I could do with it. I can't hit jack with the iron sights. Would like to be able to hit at 200Yds as i see yotes regularly at that range. Can't get much closer. Looked at Red Dots, EOtech, ACOGS and regular scope. My rifle has a fixed carry handle and I don't like the look of the longer scopes mounted up on the handle. Was wondering if the 1x of the Red Dot/EOTech's etc would be worth anything out over 100 yds. So long story short, Trade gun and get a flat top with sniper scope? Or, what works best out of the other optics mentioned. Look forward to hearing back. My experience has been the comments on this site are backed by actual use.

Hey Magic, Have you got a picture of your setup? I'm loving my MSAR, but I can't decide what kind of glass to put on it.

This is what I'm setteled on. Burris Fastfire I. I'm waiting on a 1/2" riser to get here from Bright Flashlights. (Best prices on everything. (especially YHM stuff)
