Home protection handgun

I am thinking of buying a handgun for home protection. I am thinking of a Springfield Armory XD-45. Any other suggestions. I would like to keep it under $500.

an XD-45 would be an Excellent choice, that is what I use with a Surefire X200 light loaded with Federal Hydrashok 230 Grain

I am going to see a few shops around tommorrow, and see what is local, I am kinda partial to .45acp.

If you are patial to a .45 then find a shop with The Judge. 3rds of 00 buck shot and 2rnds of a colt 45. That should be able to handle any situation.

Moseley...good call...plus being a revolver no chance of jammin in an emergency...and its fun for the WHOLE FAMILY TOO! (i.e. you dont have to be a rocket scientist to know how to shoot a revolver) Just make sure your buying what you shoot best, not what your buddies tell you is "the baddest round available" limp wrist that XD45 in a gunfight and you will be in a bad way...whereas if you go with a smaller caliber Auto .40 or 9mm much more forgiving to improper grip. I think maybe revolver though would be the best way to go just because its practically idiot proof (just dont use it to scratch your back).

See my post on your introduction thread. That aside, if you absolutely want a handgun to work with I would make sure that the wife can deal with it. Take the wife shopping with you. If she's not comfortable with the pistol she won't practice with it and she needs to run that gun as well as you do because with your deployment she will be guarding the kids and the home.

True... unless you can find a used Taurus Tracker or don't mind a Ruger Blackhawk (though I don't know who'd want a SA revolver for HD)

I think the Blued version of the The Judge is $399. I won't swear to it though.

A .38/357 Revolver on a full/mid size frame is an excellent choice as it can do double duty as a plinker, hunter, trainer, or fire breathing self defence gun. The semi-autos are a good choice too if you get a reputable manufacturer...Glock, sig, Springfield, etc.

i was thinking the same thing, you can get them at very reasonable prices and will stop any HD threat quick. plus very little training need point and shoot.

Take your $500 and buy two used service revolvers that are equally as functional as the XD-but can be used by anyone in a pinch.

Ruger or S&W 4in 38sp or 357 mag will do just fine. Plus they are used-they are already fully depreciated and will not loose any value. They should appreciate 6 to 10 percent a year. So you will get protection and an investment.

The xd is just passion for firearms.

Actually I was using my KelTec Sub2k until it craped out.As far as HD it was perfect...

COLT, S&W, Taurus all make fine 38/357 revolvers.

I really have no experience with revolvers. I have shot 1000's of rounds from M9's; but, I am open to the idea of a revolver. I small children and would keep the weapon locked up next to the bed. The shotgun would need a gunsafe, but a pistol can have a small lock box; otherwise, a shotgun would be the perfect answer.
