Primer Only Rounds

Recommended Posts

Anybody have experience making their own primer only rounds? Perhaps something quieter and safer to shoot in the backyard? Perhaps wax or foam? Can a primer push anything out of a barrel? I know I've seen reusable 9mm plastic rounds somewhere on the web before.

What are your experiences?

I used to shoot the Speer .38 Special plastic loads in my apartment. Red plastic case and black plastic bullet. Primer only. Shoot into box of newspaper and then recover the bullet and do it again. I found out they will shoot through sheetrock though.

A friend used to take primed cases and press them through a sheet of wax and shoot those indoors too.

many mango seasons ago i use to shoot home made wax bullets and primers only loads.  lots of fun on a rainy day.  but now with primers hard to find and with the high price of primers, why would you wast them with this type of load.

Years ago I shot some of the primer-only speer plastic bullets mentioned above. They worked fine but the primers quickly left a big stink in my shop building, lots of smoke in the air. Most likely some kind of toxic as well. :)

The shop was used as a music studio and electronic repair, and didn't have heavy duty air exhaust. In fact heavy duty air exhaust would have been the last thing I would have wanted because the concrete building was insulated as good as I could get it, but was still expensive to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Turning on a heavy duty exhaust would practically be blowing dollars out the exhaust into the back yard. :)

So anyway, regardless of the bullet-- plastic, wax, hot glue-- I won't try it again except in a building with real good ventilation.

Something I have done is shoved an airsodt BB down the neck of a 223 round and used the primer to launch it. Works about as well as your average airsoft rifle. BB does go off in some pretty randon directions.

MAKE SURE TO CLEAR THE BORE BEFORE SHOOTING REALL AMMUNITION!!!

When these first came out I learned that is is not good to shoot your wife in the rear end with one.  40 some years later I can still bring up the subject and see fury coming out of Good Christian Unforgiving Grammy's eyes.
