Polar Vortex, Jan. 6th, 2014

It was 39 and snowing at 5AM. By 7 it was 20 and everything had iced over. Down to 15 now but the roads around here are clear for the most part.

When I let the dog out for his 1st wizz of the day he went out the door at his normal speed of about 150 mph. I tried to slow him down but it was too late. He hit the ice on the driveway and the wreck started. For a moment he looked like he had 10 legs and 3 buttholes but he managed to correct the spin and stay upright. Pretty damn good driving on his part. Then he froze. I yelled my head off but he just stood there with a come and carry my ass back inside look in his eyes. So of course I went out and carried him back in. He's not got within 10 feet of the door since then. I've laughed all morning about it.

It was 57 deg when I went to bed at 11pm last night.  There was about 1/2 inch of snow when I got up to pee at 4am, didn't look at the temp.  Still only 1/2 inch of snow this morning at 7am and the temp was 19 deg, it's 14 now.

So much for the snowpacalypse.  I'm bummed.  If it's gonna be this dang cold, the least it could do is snow a couple inches.

My employer has a big facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.  My director sent us an email that the high temp there a couple days ago was -24 deg.  The article pointed out that the surface of Mars is warmer than that.  The low in Winnipeg was -63 deg.  That's pretty darn cold.

The vortex was fun for a little while but now I've got my fill of arctic temperatures.

Maybe it was fun when it was somewhere else.

I just about froze my fingers off trying to get my heat lamp set up under the oil pan shortly after I got home. I hope it starts in the morning.

Well, I left a trickle of water running...  it trickled out.  Pipes under the house are frozen.  Just moved my space heater down there...  gonna get chilly topside, but mayhap the pipes will thaw.  I hope.  Now 11 below, with wind chill.  Actually, I think it is colder up here on the mountain.

wondering if we just might hit zero so I can say there isn't a temperature..

Wood burning stove burning wood on full.

Have my house about 80.   trying to get it up a bit more before bed as I will have to close up the stove some then.

Well. I drive a semi for a living and despite using 2 times the amount of anti gel chemicals in the fuel, my fuel filters have frozen up. My boss said to just get it towed and get the filters changed tomorrow. So at least I get to ride in a big fancy Kenworth rotator tonight lol. I am in Ohio just a little north of Columbus on I-71 and it's a cool -13. I am lucky and do have an APU generator on the truck and am sitting toasty waiting on the wrecker. I usually stay local but just had to take this trip to make a few extra bucks. And the funny thing is... my trailer is full of hot tubs. Yep 11 spas. Irony.

Ouch.  Mine still says 8. Hope it stays that way. Cold enough already.

truthfully I have 2 and one says 2 and the other does say 7.  Digital always seems a bit off compared to mercury.  The truth is probably some place in between.

Power went out at 8 to whole complex, usually means a larger section of my area when it does. Came back on three times, back off. Looks like they finally got it, whatever it was.

Good thing I didn't care about the BCS game.

Would have been interesting by morning, as inside temp already dropped to about 55 just in those 4 hours, that's how poorly insulated against real cold modern apts. are.

Its 2 degrees here in frigid Vonore.  I had a TankerHC style thesis written on how cold it really is then the power went out, darn!  Power has flickered multiple times since I got up.  The cat won't go out.  He scatched my arm when I pushed him out.  Now the cat wants in, that was a quick pee.
