It is a black thing... we must not understand.

He says race is not a factor now but in the past he said it was. Really this should not be a shock as Powell has always leaned left but because of a few positions he held, he was considered a Republican... like McCain.

What bothered me was back in the day the GOP was pushing hard for Powell to run for POTUS with a main part of that being that he was Black and supposedly in the GOP. Sex and Race really needs to stop being an issue. The longer we keep bringing it up and making it an issue, the longer the cycle will be and we will just pass it along to the next generation.

Colin Powell is a great soldier and american.
+1

It's just too bad he's backing a douche.

:D:D

I'm glad to see that some people can disagree with a certain decision someone makes without having to completely lose all respect for that person or assume that they made their decision on arbitrary and insulting grounds (because he's black.)

I fear that the last nail was driven into McCain's coffin days ago though. Unless Obama really screws the pooch between now and election day I think we had better get used to hearing "President Obama."

I'm a little dismayed by the pick but CP is an awesome guy.

Honestly, I've long wished that CP would run but he's said on numerous occasions that he won't.

Anyone who is for mandatory volunteerism doesn't understand the basic foundation of the US.

So, just what has he supported/backed/proposed that makes you think he'd be a great POTUS?

He was a soldier.

"It was also during his Vietnam service, his second tour, that Powell was decorated for bravery. He single-handedly rescued several men from a burning helicopter, one of them being Maj. Gen. Charles Gettys, the commander of the Americal Division."

He was born American.

In 1997 Powell founded America's Promise with the objective of helping children from all socioeconomic sectors. Powell often wears the logo of the organization in the form of a red wagon pin on his lapel.

He was one of Bush43's worst appointments.

So what do you rank him in appointments for hw bush? what about for reagan? obviously someone thought he was doing something right.

I believe in mandatory service of some kind to your country. Be that in the peace/job corps, military service, civil service, etc.

Can we agree on the constitution as the basic foundation of the US?

Amendment III - Volunteers your house, with or without your consent, for the quartering of troops is congress decides to pass such a law.

Amendments V, VI, and VII - All guarantee a right of trial by jury, which is a prime example of "forced volunteerism." The framers of the constitution thought this was so important that it was reiterated 3 times in the Bill of Rights even though it was already guaranteed by Article III, Section 2 in criminal cases.

Amendment V - Also allows the government to "volunteer" your property, without your consent, as long as you are given fair market value for it.

The United States also has a long history of conscription, which was a practice that was used in the Revolutionary War.

I'm not sure what founding principle is violated by the notion that you have certain duties to your country that you can be compelled to perform.

Not to say I support mandatory military duty, but one must be careful not to confuse one's own personal opinions with "the basic foundation of the US."
