  1. I'm with BigK, if I carried a large knife or a fixed blade I may think about looking at regulations before carrying it in a foreign place. I really wouldn't think twice about carrying my 2 1/2 inch blade lockback. Heck, IMO a locking blade is a safety feature that makes the knife safer to use. I consider a knife to be a tool that I use everyday more than it is a weapon. I would check the regulations on carrying my knife just about as quickly as I would check those about wearing a belt or carrying a ball point pen. Usually I am in the "ignorance of the law is no excuse crowd" but when the New Yorkers are coming up with these asinine laws I just do kind of believe that "Ignorance is a perfectly acceptable excuse for stupid laws and that a person should make sure that their knife is well concealed at all times."
  2. We can thank the mall ninjas for that one. Lights and lasers on a slingshot? No thanks, I'll take my hickory stick and a thick rubberband. I really didn't need to see that before I had coffee this morning. ATTN mall ninjas: it is in fact possible for a weapon to function without accessory rails, flashlights and lasers...
  3. I played paintball with a slingshot ONCE, you gotta be tough for that, hurts way more than a paintball gun.
  4. I saw three box turtles crossing the road within about a 3 mile stretch yesterday. I stopped and moved one, the other two were not in locations where it was safe to stop. And I wasn't interfering, I was helping him along the way. Interfering would be if I took him to where he just came from.
  5. So what constitutes a knife as illegal in NY? I remember when I used to work loss prevention my boss was fresh out of NYC and told me that I was not allowed to apprehend anyone who I knew possessed a knife. I laughed at her and told her that I might as well go on home because in TN everybody carries a knife. She said that "only criminals" carried knives in NYC. Yeah, I don't miss that gig.
  6. Looked at a kayak at Wally world this morning, looks like a fairly decent set up for $250. I'm going to wait a bit and search Craigslist and see what I can come up with. I think a kayak would be ideal for the creeks I fish. I could also access Calderwood Lake, Chillhowie, and Lower Chillhowie all of which are within a 15 minute drive of my house.
  7. Some of those comments are sickening. I spend a lot of time in the GSMNP and I'm armed 100% of that time. OC mostly in the park as long as lots of people aren't around.
  8. Recently I've had to order a few small items off of the internet. All of these things were specialty motorcycle parts. Each of the three items that I've ordered would fit in the palm of my hand together, yet I have had to pay $12-14 to ship each one. Seems a lot of these distributors are only shipping UPS and I guess that is where their rates start now. All of these items would easily fit in a USPS Flatrate box and could be shipped for under $5. It just frustrating since I'm paying as much or more for shipping than I am for the items in question.
  9. Speed cameras are a joke, as are speed limits on a good portion of roads. The biggest problem that I have with speed cameras is that there is no way to face your accuser and contest the ticket. I've gotten out of the majority of speeding tickets that I have gotten from actual police officers by pleading my case in front of a judge. There is no avenue for defending yourself from the accusation of the camera, the camera says that you are guilty so you are guilty. I don't want to live in a country where an electronic device decides my guilt or innocence. Driver education is fundamental, it's not speed that causes crashes the majority of the time, it's distractions and incompetence. Do we not all know of a piece of road that is a speed trap? I can think of several 4 lane highways where there is no cross traffic and not lots of businesses or houses yet the speed limit may be 45 through that stretch, you can travel the same road for a few miles and everything is the same but the speed limit is 65. I try to stay within 10 mph of the speed limit if there are chances that it could be patrolled, I don't feel that I'm endangering myself or anyone else. As a society we bow down to the speed limits and we do not question them. (Some speed limits I can agree to, 70 on the freeway works, because most people are moving 80 or so, move it up and triple digit speeds will start to become common, American drivers are just not ready for that.) Why should we never question a rule imposed on us by our government? Will we take this same mentality of "don't question the rules" when the government decides to remove our hunting rifles from our possession because they hold more than one round, or they don't like the caliber?
  10. I usually open carry when I'm fishing (IWB.) Mainly because I'm wading and it helps keep my gun dry as opposed to my normal pocket carry. I usually carry in my pocket. The other day there was a lot of people around and a lot of them looked pretty hippy/ gun hating like. I tied a bandana around my belt loop and tucked it over the butt of my 642 and no one could see it. Even talked to a guy for about 20 minutes and he didn't notice. (I wasn't wearing a shirt btw)
  11. Went out for just a couple of hours Tuesday evening. Didn't see the first trout but I caught three nice small mouth. Kept the two largest for me and the girlfriend. Rolled one up in aluminum foil, had it stuffed with butter and seasoning, it was pretty good. The other I fileted and cut into bite sized chunks, rolled in seasoned flour and fried in butter, chewing was not necessary, some of the best fish I have ever had. Headed out for a few hours this afternoon!
  12. We had one that was missing a front leg one season, saw it several times around the house. It still got around pretty well and looked healthy otherwise.
  13. Okay if train horns don't work I'm thinking those little deer whistles are a scam.
  14. I got that long 1 mile trip, about to take it here in a little bit and wet a line. I'm going to have a hectic work weekend since I'm in the tourism industry. Gonna get a few hours of therapy before I start the work weekend late tonight or in the early morning.

    Eastern TN EMS

Not sure about the entire area between Knox and Chatt but I know that Rural Metro serves Knoxville and a good portion of the surrounding area.
  16. That's a cup of coffee I would like to try!
  17. Correct me if I'm wrong and I may be, but was DAC not owned by Gail Kerr and her family? The Gail Kerr as in the gun hating Tennessean columnist?

    Legal?

No need to be in the company of a legal guardian. At 17 he can drive himself to hunt, just needs to be sure guns are unloaded and guns and ammo are stored properly. Don't believe hunting license is even necessary as it is legal for minors to partake in recreational shooting as well.
  19. I've fished all my life. Since adulthood it seems that every coupe of years I get really into fishing, and then for whatever reason I get out of it. This past weekend I took inventory of my supplies, bought a few new lures and put new line on. Was pressed for time while fishing with the girlfriend Sunday evening but I was off on Monday and headed out alone for a few hours of solitude, man was it great. I've lived in this house for 2 years. The last time I was into fishing was right before I moved here, I stopped because I moved, I was really busy with work, and wasn't familiar with the local waters. Well I found out yesterday that I have a great trout stream a mile from my house. Caught a 14" rainbow on an ultralight and I'm hooked again for sure! Saw lots of really nice trout but only managed to land that one. I'm going to spend more time fly fishing in the near future as well.
  20. What the crap man? I thought I was a tough guy for passing a 5mm. That is insane. You should sell the mineral right of your body to a mining company.
  21. I've been battling stones for a few years now. First time I ever got one I thought that I was dying. I hate going to see a Dr. but when I got that first one I drove myself to the ER. Now I know what it is and I don't panic I just prepare. When I feel one coming on and take this as you want, I start drinking lots of beer, as much as I can really. I usually go for Budweiser 55 because it has a low alcohol content so I can drink more of that than normal beer. Ingesting that much liquid and with the alcohol being a diuretic you will have a stronger and more frequent stream which can help push the stone out, the anesthetic effect of the alcohol doesn't hurt either. If you absolutely can't stand the pain you can always drink more as well, after all that couldn't be as bad for you as the morphine they give you in the hospital. The other thing that I've found that helps me sometimes is riding a dirtbike, it seems to jar everything around and can knock a lodged stone loose, if you don't have a dirtbike maybe try running or jumping rope, neither of which sounds appealing when all you really want to do is lay in the fetal position and scream. Take my advice as you want, I'm no doctor, just a guy that suffers from kidney stones. Oh yeah I've tried the olive oil and lemon juice thing as well, usually a shot glass full 50/50, seemed like maybe it helped a little. Best of luck, I feel your pain.
  22. Hogs and rabbits are impressed at the rate at which this POS reproduces.
  23. I think it depends a lot on your local county clerks office as well. It seems like some days you could walk in there with a paper napkin with "title" written on it in crayon and they would give you what you want, other days it seems you have to jump through hoops to renew your tags.
  24. Got a buddy that buys the cow on hoof from a local farmer and has it slaughtered. Sounds pretty appealing after thinking about all the trouble it is to raise the cow. Can't remember what he pays but I think it comes out to a couple of dollars per pound after the meat is packaged and everything. Feeds a family of four for a year for $750.
