  1. good thread   regarding the pocket stove. i've built and used them for years. fun to build and easy.   if you don't have time or you are all thumbs, buy them on ebay all day long for cheep. there are a few commercial version that are very rugged and light if you are in a big hurry (tranga, amazon, $15, PRIME is one example)     a few things you might want to be aware of and consider.   the flame can be invisible (depending on the fuel) and you may not know it's going, and you can get burned.  be careful they will not run if sat on very cold ground/very cold wet ground/snow.  they must have something to insulate the stove body, (piece of bark/rock/whatever) as noted above, so evaporative combustion can work.   for fuel, HEET (yellow bottle) as mentioned is great.  (methyl alcohol)  (red HEET is very smoky and sooty and does not burn as hot as yellow) SLX denatured alcohol available in gallon jugs at ACE, (ethyl/methanol blend) I am playing with Everclear or PGA (pure grain alcohol) as an option - multi use (wound cleaning, knife cleaning, hand sanitizing, and maybe drinking) as opposed to only one use and it has an orange flame. Spendier but worth it to me...   YMMV
  2. excellent article....     to the point and thoughtfully written...   here's what l struggle with...   I consider myself a reasonable conservative, willing to examine and try to understand ideas and ideology that i don't necessarily agree with.  I have an open mind. yet, when i share an article like this, or even ideology like this with someone people whom i disagree with, even ones i think are reasonably intelligent, they cannot even grasp these concepts as reasonable...   and i am left baffled and re examining what i believe...  and always to the same conclusion...  that they are indeed incapable of reason or logic...     how does one share logical and reasonably unbiased text, such as this (it is biased as it clearly understands the 2nd amendment for what it means, as opposed to the "interpretation of the day")   i'm tired of ravenous ignorance and "spin"...   and yet even educated and thoughtful people will read this article, and fail to comprehend even the tiniest bit of it's logic...   why??  (real question)     perhaps i am no different or better??   as i read the articles and editorials that they all deem logical and thoughtful and find it to be pure puke. The difference being, i don't care to impose my peaceful/civil/moral belief on those who disagree with me...
  3. outstanding...   fingers crossed... in for more info...
  4. Essone, good for you. Thank you for taking a thoughtful approach to being somewhat self reliant. Strong work and I encourage you to keep it up.
  5. I have fuel (gasoline) stored in 1999 with PRI-g. Still good. I would put it in my truck today with no prob. The best fuel additive available. Believe the claims
  6. Anyone seeing any deals around chattanooga? I haven't yet
  7. pretty hard to talk me outa the Shield....  pretty amazing lil sidearm.  and the ergos rock
  8. that cylinder looks about 4-5 inches long... probably hold a least a 300 win mag...
  9. I started gun proofing my kids very early. both girls. I purposely took the scary out of it and made it a very practical part of their instruction growing up.  (see also Massad Ayoob's book on gunproofing your kids)   A responsible gun owner is just that...     When my children were young, my sidearm was secured when not on my person.  (locked up but accessible) I would allow them to see it on my person and ask questions about it. I cleaned it and disassembled it with them. I trained them regularly on "what do you do if you see a gun"...  this was important to me as i am not always going to be with them and when visiting a friends house or in an unfamiliar home, i want them to know how to respond...   1.  don't touch it. 2.  leave the room and find an adult and calmly let them know.   As they grew up i began to train them harder.  I would unload my sidearm and holster it and test them. at the age of 5, i instructed one of my daughters to goto the kitchen table and fetch her favorite movie, little mermaid... (this all was taking place within eyesight of me) i had placed my holstered and empty sidearm on top of it.   she returned and simply stated that there was a firearm on her movie and I would need to take care of it.   This training could have saved their life, i will never know but i do know that once my daughter was at the home of another friend for a birthday party.   the boy pulled a pistol from under his toy chest in a room full of kids.  My 8 year old daughter very calmly left the room and quietly notified the boys mother that he had a pistol and she might want to check it out. This was a toy pistol but the point was made.     As they grew I would include them in my range time and increased their understanding and comfort with safe handling of a firearm, muzzle and trigger discipline.     Now, both are nearly grown and while they don't have a passion for the shooting sports as I wish they did, I am very comfortable that they are safe and responsible adults.   Each one of us has to consider the risk benefit of carrying at all, and i've probably talked more people out of owning or carrying a firearm then into it... the reason is simple:  they have not considered all the implications and have not committed to what it actually means to own and or carry. If you have not committed to the very real possibility that you may take someones life while protecting the life of someone you are responsible for and that in the event of a legally justified shooting, you may lose everything (including your job, your life savings and your marriage) in the civil suit, you should not be carrying a firearm.     Every person should read "in the gravest extreme" as part of their training.  (somewhat dated data, but timeless concepts)   Carrying empty is a personal choice, but like Cruel Hand says, is an emotional decision, not logical.   with safety training and discipline applied, carrying empty is no different then driving around without your seatbelt, thinking you will have plenty of time to put it on when you need it.     A very close friend carried empty, and we debated this regularly. he too has children. We finally, through friendly discussion, uncovered exactly what Cruel Hand pointed out.  it was fear of the gun.  (he had to come to this conclusion on his own, as it would never do for me to point it out)   I explained that this was a training and discipline issue. that with proper training and gun discipline, both of himself and his boys, all the things he feared would be mitigated. he now gunproofs his boys regularly, trains (trigger discipline while unholstering was his biggest personal concern)  and secures his weapon when not on his person.   and he carries one in the pipe, comfortably.     Carry on...
  10. Alien Gear.     freakin' crazy how good the deals are... lifetime everything... well made and comfortable.
  11. kinda like the sig brace...   WTF! keep asking, keep poking, keep messing with it, and you will wake the bear.   whoever asked these questions (Mr. Pody ) already knew the answers, in their gut if nothing else.
  12. ok, after a quick read through,    i have a few  questions and a few thoughts:   did you build this upper?  or factory?   see if the upper is accurate while ignoring the optic. try this: set up a paper targer at 25 yds.   put the gun in a rest or on bags and try to shoot a 5 shot group on paper without the glass. if the group is tight, it's not gun. (doesn't mean the gun can't be improved by lapping, but i wouldn't go there yet)   and if you can, run some commercial loads.     i don't doubt your handloading ability, but before tearing into your gun, you may want to run a few commercial rounds through it and see how they group first.   had a similar issue with a friends rifle.  he was going to tear the whole thing down and start over.   when boresighted in a vise, his rifle would shoot a nice group once on paper when NOT using the scope.   but as soon as he went to the scope, he was all over the place.   his scope and rings were loose.  they felt tight, but they werent.   unmounted and correctly remounted the rings then the scope and he was good to go.   keep us posted.
  13. in my opinion, primary arms advanced micro dot with a good QD base (like Larue) simply the most rugged and best value red dot sight combo available for under $500 solid, amazing battery life (50K hrs) small, light, lifetime warranty, crazy rugged, and good enough to bet your life on if needed.    I realize many will take issue with this, and thats cool... here's my perspective:  i own ACOGs, Aimpoints, Eotechs, among others.   the  primary arms advanced micro dot is an incredible value.
  14. Have many just irons I believe you need skill with irons. Also if running just irons, skip flip ups if you ever think you will need to fight with it. Ideal is a standard FSB on the front and a non folding rear like those mentioned here. Simple Should you someday choose to enhance your rifle for little money then ad the red dot of your choice. Currently I am amazed by the advanced micro dot by primary arms. I have aimpoints and eotechs and the micro is an insanely good optic that you could bet your life on with a 50,000 hr battery life. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OD2L62M/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00KB8RQTY&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1J28Q3B94R1TVW0KGKJ2
  15. I know most of us don't run in the circles that can put this kind of glass on a rifle, but i found this to be a very interesting study of premium glass.   http://precisionrifleblog.com/2014/09/19/tactical-scopes-field-test-results-summary/         (i searched to see if this was posted prior, and didn't find it.  if it was, please redirect me to the thread and delete)
  16. TAG Hard Plate Carrier   excellent piece of kit.   pics to follow
  17. question:   WHY do people KEEP sending letters to the BATF on this...  seriously!!!!!!!   they ruled it fine, and now we have several more attempts to clarify what was a perfectly clear letter to basically everyone, except for three or so meatheads which have so far only resulted in further confusing and narrowing the scope of the intent of the BATF original statement...   keep poking the bear and it will wake up!   Probably too late, but  LEAVE IT THE FU*K ALONE
  18. nice.  actually like the new grip but would want it on my original size LCR...   any sources on grips only yet??
  19. As pointed out above: shipping to and from is different then working on for profit Technically, you can send it to him via USPS. (Also a shotgun) Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service? A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.
