  1. I agree. I've loved reading this genre ever since as a kid I read Andre Norton's Daybreak 2250 A.D...Have read most similar opns since then...One Second After was very well written. Would love to read an updated Lucifer's Hammer, set in more modern times...
  2. There's actually two of these, both good, but the original is better IMO.
  3. Saw it last night...kinda fizzled out after about half way...
  4. Defender

    Ancestry

A relative of mine spent a considerable amount of money and time researching our family. He went WAAAAy back (to Ireland, Scotland and Europe) but more recently, I am descended from 3 brothers who all fought in the battle of Chattanooga. One was killed in action there, another wounded and died right after, and the third was wounded and died quite a while ater from those wounds.
  5. I've noticed this too! I know there must be bad reviews of new guns but I don't remember seeing one ever! lol.
  6. I've got the Otterbox Defender for my Droid X. The buttons at the bottom CAN sometimes be difficult. Plus the icons for those buttons on the phone are filled in with white, but on the Defender they are just black...VERY difficult to see. Was thinking about trying to use a toothpick and whiteout, lol to make them easier to see. Only other downside is I have to change my battery regularly and it a pain to do with the Defender.
  7. IMHO, some aren't so good, some are...I try to look at it as a Saturday morning's entertainment. I get a chance to fondle some guns and gun stuff, and on occasion i pick up something I want, but not always. Never bought a gun at the shows, but I almost bought one from a non vender once, lol. I enjoy some of the non gun stuff some too. Yesterday in Gallatin I bought a small knife sharpener. I thought the Murfreesboro show last time was one of the best I had seen. Seemed to have a good blend of everything, something for everyone, lol.
  8. A friend of mine has one and he loves it. He recently shot it for the first time and said it ran flawlessly. Thats one thing, after reading so much about it, that I was concerned with, was feeding issues, but he said he had NONE I want one!.
  9. Where good hamburgers?
  10. I've liked West ever since I first heard of him, back in 2003 in that interrogation/shooting incident. Everything I've seen him say since then I've liked also. Recently saw him responding to a muslim member of an audience he was addressing. He thinks on his feet and has what I think are the right opinions. Haven't heard anything about him running, but I would support him.
  11. Snopes definitely leans way to the left, when they can. Did anyone see the View the other day when Trump was on there? Although I agree with him, I was very surprised to hear him say what he did about wanting Obama to produce a birth certificate. The "birthers" have gotten such a bad label, but whats the big deal? Like Trump said, if there's nothing wrong with it, why not just produce it and lay it all to rest?
  12. At the Nashville Fairgrounds Gun SHow in March, I saw a new belt vender. He had belts and a few other leather items, but I found one belt in my size that was a black THICK bullhide that was the thickest I had seen. The width was what I wanted, had a removable stainless steel buckle and I got it for $35.00. The guy makes them himself up in Indiana, and come to the gun show here when he visits relatives who live near here. Time will tell if it holds up well, but its absolutely the strongest leather belt Ive seen, and at a cost MUCH less than any Ive seen of that caliber.
  13. I use a ITP SA2 Elumina that I picket up for 35 or 40 bucks from a gun show. Its a small 2 X AA powered light with adjustable beam from very low to very bright (can't remember the lumens but its high) and also has a stobe feature thats easy to access. Made of black metal, with a rubber tailcap push button activation swith with a separate feature switch up front. Came with a strap, belt pouch, pocket clip , an extra tail cap swicth and extra bulb, and has the anti roll feature also.I love this light. I bought another one for my son. I've never seen one so bright that uses AA batteries.
  14. Droid X here. I got a pretty good deal from a guy who wanted to sell his Verizon Droid X and had it fully flashed for Cricket. My monthy bill is $55.00 FOR UNLIMITED everything! You gotta be careful with that though because many of those phone places can't or don't know how to FULLY flash them. If its not fully flashed you don't get all the features. With mine I can do everything. I used the built in GPS program to get me to Disney World and back last week. Worked great! As far as swiping goes, can those who use swype tell me how steep the learning curve is? I haven't yet tried that.
  15. Admittedly, my political beliefs lean a little to the right, but I really don't see our immigration policy as left or right as much as a pure survival issue. If any of you like to read, check out Patrick Buchanon's book, "State of Emergency: The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America." You can read about it here: Amazon.com: State of Emergency: The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America (9780312360030): Patrick J. Buchanan: Books A more graphic illustration of just how serious the issue is can be viewed here: I have no doubt at all that we can significantly reduce or end our immigration problems. What I doubt is our willingness to do so. Perhaps one way to help would be to stop being the world's policeman and station many of our troops on our borders and in our ports. Sure, some will always get in, but a significant reduction would be a big help. If we couple these efforts with social service reform, i.e. welfare, food stamps, disability, unlimited unemployment payments...we can fix the problem.
  16. Nothing we WILL do about it, maybe. We COULD do plenty, if we had backbone. I work in the employment industry and I see much of the problem first hand. I think the problem is multifaceted and requires some sacrifices to fix. Secured borders, mass deportations of ilegals already here are necessary, and a sharp decrease in the number of legal immigrants also, but another component required is to stop or drastically decrease the numbers of people we allow to get a free ride on our tax dollars. Drawing unemployment for 2 years, food stamps, welfare, housing, SS disability benefits, etc...are so liberal that a large number of unemployed are simply not seeking work. I know this doesnt apply to all, but believe me, it does to a significant portion of our unemployed. Stop these benefits and these people will have to work and will fill the void left by the exodus of the illegals. It's not an overnight fix, and it will hurt for a bit, but it will work. We managed to do just fine without all of these immigrants for all those years when the gravy train was not as liberal as it is now.
  17. PLUS...why do they charge extra for the M indorsement just to type the letter M in the computer? When I added mine I had the Safety class cert so I didnt have to take the road test...but they sure do keep adding the extra money for that M every time I renew.
  18. I had an ITAC kydex paddle holster that I got for my Ke;tec P-3AT. It was nice, had a built in extra mag holder and I think it had the pushbutton release like some of the serpas do. I sold the Keltec, but don't think I sold the holster with it. m I SHOULD still have it somewhere. I will look and if I do, still have it, you are welcome to see if it fits. If it does, we will work something out.
  19. I went to the Franklin show last month...not good. The Nashville Fairgrounds have been getting better. The prices seem to be coming down a lot there. I prefer to buy my guns from local dealers, but still love going to the shows...looking for a holster there tomorrow.
  20. I agree. The military went away from full autos for the average infantrymen a while back, opting for models with switchability between semi auto fire and 3 round burst fire modes. I know they do have M4A1s with full auto also though. Geneva Convention limitations to non expanding rounds, as Jason said, is the primary problem with 5.56. I see them changing to a bigger round before deviating form the standard NATO non-expanding round.
  21. From reading the report, along with a few others, I gather that there are least SOME people involved in the selection process who would like to see the 5.56 superseded by the 7.62...and I think they are probably on the right track for more than one reason.
  22. Thought y'all might find this interesting: Army Looking for Weapon to Replace M4 February 10, 2011 Stars and Stripes|by Dan Blottenberger BAMBERG, Germany -- The Army is searching for a replacement for its M4 carbine, one of its primary weapons in Afghanistan. In a draft solicitation, the Army's research and development arm is asking weapons manufacturers to try to produce a carbine rifle that can outperform the M4, which has been part of the Army inventory since the mid-1990s. Learn more about the M4 Carbine at Military.com's Equipment Guide "Is there something better than the M4 out there? Let's go find out," said Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller, head of PEO Soldier, during a media roundtable last week. The Army has about 500,000 M4s in its inventory. The M4's lethality and reliability have been questioned for years. A Congressional Research Service report released in June cited at four studies that found varying levels of fault with the M4. The first study, published by the U.S. Special Operations Command in 2001, concluded the M4A1 design was fundamentally flawed, saying a variety of factors "led to alarming failures" under harsh conditions and heavy firing schedules. The command started replacing its M4s in 2009, opting for the Special Operations Combat Assault Rifle, known as SCAR. An Army-commissioned study released in 2006 by the Center for Naval Analyses said 20 percent of soldiers recommended a larger bullet to increase lethality. Some in the combat zones commented on the weapon's limited ability to effectively stop targets, saying those who were shot multiple times were still able to continue fighting, the study stated. While the Army is upgrading the M4s in the field now to address such issues, it has begun looking for a replacement. Army officials plan to meet with vendors on March 30 in Washington to offer feedback and answer specific questions on the project. The Army will issue a solicitation for the new weapon in May, according to a Program Executive Office memo dated Jan. 31. The three-phase selection process for a replacement is expected to take at least two years. No new carbines are expected to be fielded for at least three years. During the first phase, the Army will determine if a company is able to provide a weapon according to PEO's requirements and whether the weapon can be produced at a reliable pace. The requirements request production up to 4,200 weapons per month, with a minimum of 2,000 per month. During the second phase, the weapons will test fire approximately 700,000 rounds. The weapons will be graded on their physical attributes and features as well as their compatibility with existing Army accessories. Other areas of consideration include accuracy, reliability and durability, according to a PEO press release. Some of the requirements listed are a barrel life of 20,000 rounds, flash suppressors, and backup sights allowing accurate engagements up to 2,000 feet. The weapon must be able to handle various attachments to include a grenade launcher. It will also be determined if the new carbine will use 5.56 mm rounds or 7.62 mm ammunition, said Tamilio. During the third phase, about 850,000 additional rounds will be fired to test the lethality of the weapon against multiple targets. It is still uncertain at this point whether the top entry will replace the current M4, which is undergoing an overhaul. Upgrades to the M4 include a more resilient barrel, ambidextrous controls, a full-automatic setting and a more lethal round. The improvements will be integrated into the force this year, PEO officials said in an interview with Stars and Stripes last year. The first of the new carbines, which are expected to cost about the same as the current M4, will go to infantry units, Tamilio said. The Army introduced the M4 as a shorter-barrel version of the Vietnam-era M16 rifle. Both weapons are still heavily used by soldiers today.
  23. Question: Years ago I had a AMT .380 backup. Didn't like it and sold it a long time ago. I recently saw one for sale on another board, which was listed as above. In the narrative, the seller said it would fire BOTH the .380 and the 9mm kurz. I thought the .380 and 9mm Kurz were the same thing. Have I been confused all these years?
