  1.  Couple years ago at the Holly Springs, MS hummingbird festival they had the snake man give a presentation.  I forget his name and where he's from but I think maybe the North MS area.  Dude knew everything about snakes, and he was very entertaining.  He had several live ones to show off and at the end he got about six children in the audience to line up and hold this giant boa all the way across.
  2. I see deer just about everyday on or around my property.  I'll put corn and apples out for them in different spots and it's usually gone in a couple days. Every now and then I buy buck jam at Tractor Supply and pour it on stumps and whatnot.  Friday afternoon I was shooting and went inside to get an AR that I wanted to re-zero .  As I'm walking back to my shooting area I slap in the magazine then look up and there's a doe just frozen about 70 yards away.  I stop and we stare at each other for a couple minutes.  I don't hunt and I know it's not season, but I just found it ironic that I've got a loaded rifle and a perfectly clear broadside shot on this animal.  Then she looks over her shoulder and back in the trees I hear her friend start snorting (Get out of there Gracie he's gonna shoot you!).  Gracie decides I'm not going to shoot her after all though and she wanders off.    Saw a turkey on Friday too.  We have these big, almost floor to ceiling bay windows that overlook the back of the property and it's better than television to sit there and watch what wanders by.  I keep two pair of binoculars close by.  Last week I saw a hawk fly down, land on a low branch, and study the ground below.  I look to where the hawk is looking and there's a snake.  For whatever reason the hawk says no joy and flies off.  It may have been the size--turns out the snake was 4' long.  I get a 22, go out and shoot it but later I wish I hadn't because I'm pretty sure it's not venomous. I thought it might be a cottonmouth but there's not a river nearby and the scales were different.  Upon further research I believe it was a diamondback water snake.  I've seen a couple of them since near the house, and I leave them alone now.  My wife says kill 'em all but I like them for rodent control.    Update: three doe have walked up and started eating some corn and apples I put out yesterday.  Watched a squirrel join them too.
  3. I liked Joe when he was running Hero Gear.  He always had interesting to say as an industry professional.  I know he's moved on to Battle mug I just don't see him on here as much.   Len was cool.  Always a voice of moderation and reason.   The Rabbi.  You have to bring his name up once in a while.  For those who did not know him, he did not fade away but simply crossed the line one day.  Did that "civil society" forum he started up ever take off?
  4. Patron.  Ha!  Better not let them catch you saying gallery, or audience member or...crowd.  It's always "patron" at AN.  So nice for the private jet-owning, Goldman Sachs board-serving bluebloods who run that place to bestow such a title upon us commoners.  Like we can almost, almost be a part of their world for a day.  Thank you Bill Payne and Hootie and the rest of you Very Powerful People.  (Is Hootie still around?  I remember him being all in the news when there was a push to let broads be members).  Anyway no I won't be watching, go too much to do around the house, just like every weekend.
  5. What is the difference between chrome moly and chrome lined?  Today I ordered a blemished PSA upper with a cmv barrel and a cl bore.   Actually I looked again and it's a cl-cmv barrel.  So it's both?
  6.   Dang where have YOU been?  I miss a day here and there but that's the first post I've seen from you in years.  If my light's mounted that particular day I'll shoot with it on, more than anything just too lazy to change holsters.  I don't worry about it getting obscured by residue, in fact I just realized I had a little film on there from yesterday.
  7. Real or not, I don't think there is a single round of surp 5.45 left in the country at prices from 36 hours ago. It happened that fast. I do think it is real because some credible industry personnel have verified it. I never got into 5.45 but I do have two Mosins and a lot of 7.62x54r. I have not bought any of that ammo in a while but I'm thinking about getting a couple more crates when it's back in stock. It is now the last of the great surplus ammo out there (you might also include Swiss GP11 but it's more expensive). If someone produces a PSL-type pistol then it's gone.
  8. Could be worse, but I agree we're spoiled by Pmags.  Glock magazines in this market are some of the more reasonably priced ones out there.  Bottom line is that's what people will pay.  You might be able to do a little better than $30 for new ones.  I just ordered some police trade-in 17s for about $18 shipped.
  9. The Surefire crew will come in soon enough, but I'll just say that I have a TLR1 on a Glock 19 and really like it.  I carry it most days and it carries well (helps to have a good holster).  I also have one on an AR.  Sometimes at night I'll step outside and shine it into the woods to see if I can light up the deer.  That thing is bright.  For everyday carry and home defense it is a solid choice.  Surefire x300s are the crem de la crem, and I've seen them new for as low as $150 I think, but you won't be disappointed in a TLR1.  I don't know anything about the laser though.
  10. I keep slugs on the side not necessarily for human threats (though it works of course) but for animals.  I could see a situation where a feral dog comes onto my property and having to shoot at more than 25 yards.  I always think of the scene in To Kill a Mockingbird where the sheriff hands Atticus a rifle and he drops the dog with rabies at the end of the street with one shot.   More and more though I've been thinking of selling my shotgun and all the ammo and getting another AR.
  11. Five bids so far.  Once again the market speaks the truth.
  12. CTD may be the smartest guys in the room.  Don't get me wrong, I scoffed at their $75 Pmags and $100 bricks of 22 like most everybody else, but they've got a reason for what they do and it's not just to blindly rip people off.  They've been around for about 20 years I think, and they're not going away anytime soon.  I'm sure the last few years have been good to them as they get crucified on forums.   And they do have good prices when there is an oversupply.  Several times recently they've had 9 mil ammo for 22 cents a round or less (steel case).
  13. Sam from SG Ammo made a pretty dramatic comment about this in his AR15.com subforum: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_467/246988_It_s_baaaack_____________.html&page=1#i2316617   For him to say that is significant.  He may be wrong, but dealing in ammo is what he does for a living.  And I don't think he's being a salesman here either, just egging people on to buy more.  This is probably legit inside information.
  14. This is the state of being a gun enthusiast in today's climate.  Just a little sabre rattling sets off a run on certain types of ammo.  Aim surplus is currently sold out of x39 and 5.45, SG Ammo not too far behind.  Have to admit I'm part of the problem--I bought a case of that generic white box x39 last week when I probably wouldn't have but for the news.  But even if there are trade sanctions we still have Romania, Bulgaria, and of course Ukraine, so let's not go crazy.
  15. About once a year I represent someone on this type of case out of the Memphis airport. It's always a class A and class B misdemeanor. Not too difficult to get dismissed, but they have to pay something like a $1500 fine to TSA. That plus the lawyer and court fees, plus missing your flight, plus having to get booked and go to court and all that, makes it an expensive and inconvenient mistake. At least it's not a problem to get the gun back once the case is over.
  16. I agree about the pitfalls of opening a new rim fire manufacturing plant. It would take years to see any profit and this panic will be over by then. But you might catch the next one. Also agree that only higher prices will quell the demand. That's the only thing to do in this situation. People spew vitriol on cheaper than dirt and the resellers, then brag about having bought all the 22 ammo available when they saw it on the shelf. By doing so they're justifying the existence of the very companies/people they hate for raising prices. Personally I'm just going to shoot less 22, maybe 100 rounds a month. At that rate I could go several years before my supply started to get too low for comfort. Hopefully before then it'll come down in price. But I'm also preparing myself mentally to pay higher prices. We'll see how this year goes.
  17. I watched the opening ceremony last night. It was a rather selective take on Russian history. Tolstoy was well represented but they pretty much skipped the pograms and labor camps. Vlad Putin, who no doubt is calling the shots for the whole thing, probably figured that wouldn't make for good tv on the international stage. I love the Winter Olympics and don't care at all for the summer games. Something about the mountains, the snow and the ice. It's majestic. And there are some total babes, but I'm not talking about the 14- year old figure skaters. I'm more into the Alpine ski chicks. Hotness right there.
  18. What you want is just a good criminal defense lawyer. Ask people you know in the area, or go down to the courthouse and ask a cop. When a cop gets the screws twisted to them on the stand by a good lawyer, they tend to remember the name.
  19. What a great actor. His career has spanned forever. I believe he was in the original stage production of the Fantastiks, that quirky little musical that ran off Broadway for decades. He was Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird. Of course Godfather 1 and 2, and then Apocalypse Now. Great stuff in the 80s and 90s. Won the Oscar for Tender Mercies.
  20. What the hell, you're probably already on a list.  Go for it.
  21. Go ahead and twist that knife.  Just like gas prices, milk, what else...
  22. I'm all alone with the dogs here. The wife went to Colombia (her home country) to see family. Last year this time I was down there and man we partied. It was a blast. Too much going on for me to go this year. Tonight I Think I'll build a fire. Still got half a bottle of Gent. Jack from Christmas. Maybe later on I'll step out back and fire the Mosin some.
  23. So what happened to his criminal charge? Did it go to the grand jury?
  24. I'm not a beer snob by any means but life is just too short to drink gutter swill like Budweiser. Now if it's a hot day and I'm offered one for free and that's all there is, yeah I'll take it. But that stuff is piss. They are much better at slick marketing than making beer.
  25. It's debatable how much of the AK's design was really his.  But he certainly got the credit.  The NY Times' obit today is written by CJ Chivers, who wrote a comprehensive history of the rifle a few years ago.
