Lead Bullet reloads for my .30-30...A question
Jonnin replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Between the pressure and temp of the hot gas from the gunpowder, you can produce enough heat to melt or soften the lead, which can cause it to get in the barrel some. Some powders burn at a higher temp than others. With any luck, your bullet base will expand into the barrel when slapped with the hot gas, sealing it and preventing gas blowby. If you make the load too light, it may not, so there may be a "sweet spot" where too light a load is and too hot a load both cause issues but in between it is good. Not sure about that, but it would seem that you want to hit hard enough to seal the round to the barrel without going overboard and ripping it thru the barrel at 3000+ fps. 1300 fps in a rifle is probably 1000 fps in a 5 or 6 inch pistol barrel. That is a handgun load! I have shot a lot of the MO bullets in handguns with zero lead problems, and I have not had to take any steps to counter lead problems. Their hard alloy seems to work as advertised, and I wonder if you are overthinking this & trying to solve a problem that you may not even have? -
they really need to do better to describe the perps. I now know all about his entire wardrobe, but not his race, hair color, eye color, or, you know, anything that might actually ID the guy once he throws the bandanna and gloves in the trash can.

Lead Bullet reloads for my .30-30...A question

I would just give them a try with a light load. The worst that can happen is you get to spend a day getting the lead out. I think you can also get into paper patching, if you want to go there. -
Skeet shooting with wife Need advise
Jonnin replied to Mykltn's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Has she tried the 12 ga? A limbsaver pad perhaps, with a light load (the black walmart dove loads for example) may be OK for her to try the sport out. She may not even like skeet or want to pursue it after a couple of trips? My wife is a bit taller but probably no stronger, and she can handle a tamed 12 pretty well (we have an 1100 with a good recoil pad and doctored to function on light loads). I would have her try it one time if she has not. In the long run a 20 or 16 ga would either one be an excellent choice, if she likes it. A 410 is exceptionally gentle -- children shoot them --- if she is extra sensitive. -
RK show at Camp Jordan Arena in Chattanooga Sept. 1st and 2nd
Jonnin replied to reed1285's topic in Events and Gatherings
I will be there, going to try to find an AR to use with my bump stock, if I can find one cheap (M&P maybe, or the like). -
zero tolerance is fine as a concept, and I approve of it so long as the implementation is sane (it is not, as seen above). Kid with a weapon at school should be sent home for good and a note on the record. Weapon should follow the same rules as adults (3+ inch knife, gun, etc) ---- toys, gestures, clothing, etc is not a weapon and is going too far. If done properly, by age 10 kids have a respect for the laws and consequences (or they are now home schooled and unable to enter any public school again until age 18) ---- and hopefuly understand that the grownup world is also zero tolerance (for actual weapons carried illegally). Not saying I approve of the current weapon laws for adults, just that I would not mind seeing the zero tolerance thing executed in a way to instill a sense of consequences into the kids, if that makes sense.

You can get a lot better guns for very low prices though; this isnt 1962. For the same money you could score a cz-82 (or could a couple of years ago, they were $90 a pop at one point I think?) --- a rugged and reliable gun from a quality manufacturer and chambered in an inexpensive but potent enough caliber. You can get a used kel-tec in a variety of calibers for not much more than the zinc antique, and if the kel-tec goes wrong at least you can get it fixed for free. I agree that inexpensive guns are an important market for those not well off, but these days, you can get a lot for a little if you do some homework.

Should worshipers be allowed to arm themselves?
Jonnin replied to zapfbroad's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Matthew 26 (bunch of verses) ... woman pours expensive perfume onto Jesus, and he defends her waste of money saying you willl always have the poor and that this was a wonderful gesture on her part. You can sell all the churches and tear it all down, take all that money ... and feed the hungry for a few weeks, save a few addicts, but after a time the money will be gone and they go hungry again, it has no lasting effect to throw money at the poor except to run out of money and put everyone in the poorhouse (sounds like a political stance..). Also, apart from a certain ancient and established church, most of the churches I have been in were rather sparse. No stain glass, no display of wealth, and many were just a concrete block building with an alter and pews. Its not a tent, but its not a billion dollar cathedral either. One small church I visited just used a meeting room at a business that was willing to allow them use of the facility. -
I did a bit more research for you cause work is slow today. The 1891 can handle NATO pressure (about 50k) 308s but not modern higher pressure loads (over 60k). The older 765 ammo was in the 45k range while newer stuff is 55k roughly. So, in a nutshell, your gun as it is will shoot light 308 loads inaccurately (again, barrel wrong size) and 308 cases can be used to produce working ammo for it (insert .311 or .312 slugs). Apparently a gunsmith can add a gas port in the action which would allow the higher pressure 308s to be used. If building a new gun from the action, this would be done as well, so it could very well be used to build a custom 308. For whatever that is worth.
-
In the end it is up to you. A customized 700 is likely to cost you more than a custom gun built off the mauser --- the mauser parts are free and in hand. If you are going to make a custom gun anyway, its just your choice to use what you have or start from scratch. Many, many mausers have been turned into custom rifles in this manner --- and for a reason, the action is one of the best ever made. Shooting it and leaving it be is also a fine option, just as it is you have a high powered rifle of great quality. Only issue is somewhat limited choices for ammo if you do not make your own. 308 is certainly cheaper and easy to find... I am not sure what it would take to convert the mauser to 308. The 308 is about 10-15% higher pressure, and that may be too much in the 91 when they were still using black powder (I think?). The 308 is smaller across the board, but not by MUCH .... it is thousandths of an inch smaller at the base, and not even .1 inch shorter OAL. As with the 06, the bullets are a hair too small for the barrel. the shape of the shoulder of the 308 is totally different. If it will chamber, it might actually shoot --- but I would be very careful about that pressure issue in that gun, and get someone besides ME to comment on how safe that might be. The mausers were tough, but 15% overpressure might be a bit much even so. It might be a better conversion than 30-06 --- the reason they did 30-06 is the 308 was not popular for civillians yet and 765 was unpossible to find, so the next best fit was the 06. 308 is just a little more than 06 for pressure....

Nye is not spending enough time talking to real people. Almost every engineer I know that was born in this country is a conservative and most are christians. They are not held back at all. Conversely, most of the liberals I know could not solve X+1 =2 on a good day, and those tend to be the "greens" who are all about global warming and typically not christian. Evolution happens, we have seen animals and plants over time reproduce useful genes and die off when they had lesser genes. Pretty much a fact. To take that and produce a theory that in a relatively short time, single cell critters that spontaneously poofed into existance due to a lightning strike became human takes as much, or more, faith than creationism. There is no evidence of either one, both are pure faith.

I cannot help you with building it, that is beyond me. Pretty much, you want a new stock, a new barrel (30-06 probably, possibly 30-30 would work as well or 243 or 25-05 stuff like that) and a way to put it all together so that it fits right, the barrel is bedded right, etc. Probably want it set up for a scope. Sounds simple but the tools to do that correctly and get it all fitted are going to present some challenges to you. Or you can pay someone to do it, but you will spend more than the gun will be worth to get it right. even though cut up, save that barrel and stock, doubly so if their serial numbers match the action. It will always be a bolt action. Its up to you, but BA + tacticool = doh to me. I would just make it a BA deer or target gun and call it good.

I agree. ^^^^^ -
is this 7.65? It is not hard to deal with the ammo issue, if you reload. You can make or buy the brass, and the rest of it is very easy to find (303 brit slugs, whatever powder and primer). If you do not reload, you can find the ammo easily but it is rather expensive. Old ammo, of course, is going to be corrosive, anything pre 1960 is suspect. You can have it cut up into 30-06 but that is shooting a 308 in a .312 bore and inaccurate and I strongly recommend against it. You can rebarrel it, and that might be a better answer than cutting the chamber up, since a rebarrel would give good accuracy. Here again, if you reload, you *could* poke a 303 brit into a 30-06 case, but at that point, you could just have made the original round so that would be strange and worse, it might cause a pressure issue if someone stuck your round in a real 30-06. As the gun is already cut up, a new stock and whatever is of no additional harm --- it is already ruined for collectors and is just another shooter. Another idea, you can take out the action and build a custom gun from there. Since you are already looking at a barrel and stock, why not? If you want some help making the cases or talking 7.65, I went thru all that a couple of years ago and can help. There is a type of bipod for bolt action guns that just fits on the barrel. Or you could drill and mount a rail on the underside and use an AR bipod. Either of these is pretty simple and you could probably DIY. edit: ammo link: http://www.ammunitio...ll-metal-jacket $15 for 20. 30-06 costs as low as 12 for 20 -- but the "same" stuff from privi in '06 is also $15 per 20 so its not that big a difference in price.

yea there was quite a donation from all sorts of places. But the outgoing - incoming is yet another drain, and we cannot afford to borrow more to give away right now. -
If you reload 380, you can probably shoot it safely enough with a middling load. If you do not, the price of the ammo would be better spent on a new gun. It isnt worth much, under $200 at a guess, even in less than a box ever condition. If it were me, I would verify if it works or not, then load it up, and stash it somewhere as an emergency gun (car, near a door, that sort of thing). If it gets stolen, no big loss.

Hmm, how much money did the rest of the world give to katrina victims? I see no reason to help them, they do not ever aid us. There was some, by the way. It was just peanuts compared to what the US tends to give away. I think we spent more on Hati than we got for katrina --- its another form of the trade deficit, we give away more than we get by a large factor. I am all for aid, when we can afford it, by the way. But I am against it when we cannot. Borrowing money to give away is folly, no matter how nice the gesture. -

Leaving it alone, that is fine (agreed). Having it less than businesses is fine (agreed except this implies that businesses have an extra burdensome law that needs revoked). Having the the same as a business is OK by me too (but, this should be pretty minimal --- the business or church should both decide go or no-go on their property, and that is the extent of it -- the state's involvement is words to that effect and no more). Having an extra law for churches: not OK by me (GA for example). I think we were saying the same thing, but I spelt it out this time. -

^^^^ A lot of the health care problem stem from our limitless capacity to sue. A doctor or whoever that screws up should be liable, yes, and if the result of their screw up was bad enough (for example, the discarded kidney this last week) they should be put out of business by the lawsuit. Allowing them malpractice insurance to cover the punishment paid for by customers is a problem: the bad doctors and hospitals etc do not go out of business and the price of healthcare is inflated to cover the lawsuits. The whole point of the lawsuits is to destroy caregivers that kill or maim by incompetence, but our system has found a way to circumvent that and it has gone downhill from there. Putting the govt in charge is a whole new level of the same. The gov't paid caregivers will have no liability in the long run. -

^^^^ That is along the lines of what I say, except I put it a lot more crudely. I mostly view nosey people as a form of entertainment. I have been "blessed" with a bunch of them from my childhood neighborhood/church/school/etc. Its better than TV when they come flocking to ask about every aspect of my life. -

Jonnin replied to zapfbroad's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
It should be up to the congregation or religion/organization to decide what is allowed in their "church" (insert specific term as applies for "church"). The state should treat a "church" the same as any other business in most regards and leave it at that. -
I have always used one. Not having shot anything else, I cannot comment on what you would find overwhelming though? I did not have any fancy sighting stuff, just look down the arrow to aim. It took a while for me to find the sweet spot with my hands and all; its amazing how much more muscle you need to draw it if you hold it slightly differently. When you find the sweet spot, it is almost effortless to draw and you can hold it there for a long time without any pain. Mine is old so you have to unstring it every time or it would be ruined if you leave it strung too long. I do not know if modern bows are OK left strung or not. You will probalby want an arm-guard at first --- the string can hit your forearm and that is very bad if not protected. You can learn to shoot it and not get hit but for a while, you will need the protection. You can get a little metal ring to put on the string to mark where the arrow should sit and hold it there --- this is a big help to consistent use which leads to accuracy. It is the only "extra" I used. Like anything else, practice makes perfect.

Lol. Work the sarcasm up, it really is effective --- nothing shuts people down like a prepared comeback to the most common stuff. For me, it was my lawn. My next door neighbor griped about how I did not mow once a week for a while, until I told her my mower was out back of my house and she could use it to mow my yard as much as she wanted anytime she wanted. She spluttered for a bit and wanderd off never to complain again. And for the longest it was "when you gonna have kids, can you not have kids, don't you want to have kids, you could adopt if something is wrong, kids kids kids...." I have some choice remarks about that topic but its not fit for posting here -
I thought the same thing when I read that strange comment. An atheist or agnostic would not be following "god's law" (whatever that is, are we talking leviticus? the 10 commandments? Shairia? Jewish? Hindu? Buddah? ....... ??!!!) but might still follow most of man's laws (does not murder, steal, rape, or drive at excessive speed?). IE there are plenty of law abiding folks that follow the laws of their state and country without burning any animals or whatever.

Lol, it isnt. Rifled, that is.
