My father-in-law did something similar to combat mailbox batting.

He made the mailbox out of mild 3/8" steel welded into a box. Then he put the arm, (it had to extend over the ditch to the street), on a swivel mount, and the mount was sunk in concrete. I got him a mailbox alarm from RadioShack so that whenever someone opens the box it sounds a buzzer in the house. He doesn't have much trouble with it now.

EDIT: Too cold for a rattlesnake to be useful!

Your father in law doesn't live off of Hwy 96 in the Blackman area of M'boro does he? I grew up driving past a house that had a mailbox like that and always thought it was cool

Nope. The in-laws live in Kansas City, Missouri on a rather steep hill. In the winter is when cars would take-out the mailbox. Then he also had kids getting into it, which the alarm helps to cure.

Make a propane cannon (simple, really). Microswitch in the mail box. Brown skivvies follow soon thereafter. :D

My dad did it with a low voltage solenoid and an air horn to my uncle (my uncle was a mailman). Poor feller damn near had heart failure.

Sadly I am just kidding about electrifying the mailbox idea but the rattlesnake, hmmmmmm (scratches chin ominously)

You would be amazed at how pi*&ed off a possum can get after spending a few hours in a mailbox :D:tough:

How about one of those dye-packs they use at the bank?

Than I'd burn up my mail! But then again, it's just bills, so that may work. Unfortunately my branch doesn't use dye packs anymore cause' they are surpisingly expensive but I may be able to improvise my own. But I'm not that worried anymore cause my HCP came Saturday! Woot!
