What does an internal and external extractor look like?

Does anyone have pics of the internal vs external extractor setup on 1911s? I've been told by several to stay away from 1911s with externals. I need to know what it looks like to avoid it.

Look on the right hand side of the gun at the ejection port. If you can see the extracter just to the rear of the port, that's external. If you cannot, internal.

Hope that helps. BTW, a lot of folks don't have issue with the external extractor. My experience as well as my shootin bud is that they suck. Luck of the draw!!

I think Kimber had problems with their external extractor. I know my Pro Carry did. Smith & Wesson has used external extractors on their pistols for years with no problems. Smith & Wesson 1911's seem to work fine with external extractors.

This has me thinking. Are there any semi-auto pistols with an internal extractor other than the 1911? I honesty cannot think of one.

The early Browning Hi-Powers have an internal extractor.

I have one similar to this, but mine doesn't have the dished-out place on the slide, between the ejection port and the muzzle.

Mine was one of the last ones made before the switch to external extractors.

Whoever told you this....be wary of any advice they give as it is heresay and not experience talking

This is part of my problem in a 1911 search. I really don't know who's giving good advice and who isn't. I've always been a rifle guy. This will be my first handgun, much less first 1911. So it's why I've been taking my time with it and asking a lot of questions.
